Sophie's P.O.V
Sophie remained silent as she used her fork to scrape her plate of food that hadn't been touched.
She kept her head down, trying to avoid her parents' concerned glances.
Edaline cleared her throat. "So...um how was school today, Sophie?" Edaline asked, breaking the awkward silence.
"Fine," Sophie mumbled, still refusing to look up.
Edaline cleared her throat again. "Would you...care to elaborate?"
"I said it was fine! What more do I need to say?!" Sophie asked, throwing her hands up while still looking down. She felt frustration and annoyance rise in her.
"Sophie, will you at least eat?" Edaline begged.
"I'm not hungry," Sophie mumbled, shrinking down.
"Sophie, I'm getting tired of that excuse, and I'm sure your father is too," Edaline said with a stern voice. Sophie peaked up a little and could see Edaline giving Grady a look as if she wanted him to agree with her.
"Um yeah sure, eat your food," Grady mumbled, distracted, barely looking up from his newspaper.
Edaline scoffed and elbowed Grady hard. "Ey! What's going on?!" Grady exclaimed, finally looking up.
Of course he was oblivious, as always.
Edaline rolled her eyes and gestured to Sophie.
"Ohhh," Grady said in realization.
Honestly, did her parents not realize she was watching them?
Grady then cleared his throat and turned his head to face Sophie. Sophie quickly snapped her head back down as if she wasn't paying attention.
"Sophie, look at your mother and father," Grady said.
See, she should probably listen but the rebellious side of her refused to listen.
"Sophie," Grady warned.
After a few long seconds, Sophie let out a dramatic sigh and finally looked up. "What?" She asked, with an edge in your voice.
"I'll tell you what. You need to quit this act you've been putting up for the past month! This isn't like you at all!" Grady exclaimed, looking Sophie right in the eye.
Sophie clenched her jaw. "There is no act," she snapped.
"Watch your tone Sophie or you'll be seeing a lot of my metal bat," Grady warned, raising an eyebrow.
"Grady! This is not the time for jokes!" Edaline hissed.
"I'm not joking," Grady corrected.
Oh, Sophie didn't doubt it.
Grady was quite notorious for using his infamous spiked metal bat. He had a serious obsession with it and claims he was influenced by a ninja group called the DNM.
Till this day, Sophie still can't quite grasp the idea that they truly do exist.
Sophie shuddered thinking of what those ninjas could do.
"Honestly, you've been like this ever since..." Grady started to mumble, but then cut himself off.
He didn't need to finish that sentence. Sophie knew exactly what he was talking about.
Ever since her birthday when the Neverseen escaped. It had caught her so off guard— she shouldn't have been so surprised. They are the Neverseen but...Sophie just thought that they were finally gone.
But now that they had escaped from prison, who knows what they were planning.
Sophie didn't want to think about that either. In fact, she didn't want to think about them at all.
But, the mind is evil in so many ways and it won't ever let her forget.
The Neverseen caused her so much pain and scarred her so deep. If she had to admit, she was truly scared of them and that was the exact reason she was acting up lately.
Of course, Grady and Edaline were very aware of the situation but Sophie knew she couldn't get away with this act forever.
"I'm going to bed," Sophie decided, getting up to leave the dinner table.
"Um how about no," Edaline said, getting up.
Sophie blinked hard and looked away. "Why can't you guys just drop it? I don't feel good and I don't want to have this conversation!" Sophie exclaimed, her voice rising.
"Sophie, if we keep letting you go you won't EVER want to have this conversation! I'm sick of seeing you this way and it upsets me that you can't talk to your father and I like you used to! STOP shutting us out!" Edaline argued back, looking like she was about to burst into tears.
"Well? What are you going to tell me? That everything is going to be okay and that they won't hurt us?!" Sophie yelled back.
"Sophie, we have our weapons and back up. They are not going to hurt you," Grady said, getting up too.
"Isn't that what you said LAST time? And the time before that? And the time before that? AND EVERY TIME?!" Sophie yelled out. "I'M SICK OF YOU GUYS LYING AND PRETENDING EVERYTHING IS OKAY! BECAUSE IT'S NOT!"
Grady and Edaline got quiet as their eyes showed sadness and guilt.
Sophie should have felt guilty but she really didn't.
"Sophie, look, I know things don't seem so good right now but right now we are safe. That's what matters and this time we have learned from our mistakes so we are extra careful. And do you think shutting everyone out is going to make anything better? Because it's really not," Edaline spoke up after some silence.
"Okay, but I can't help myself! I— I don't know...I just— forget it. You guys don't understand," Sophie stuttered.
"Sophie, we do understand. We were hurt too," Edaline said. Sophie noticed she was touching her stomach where the Neverseen had stabbed her once.
"That's not what I meant. I mean, you guys don't understand the pressure," Sophie explained, feeling her tears trying to come out.
But she wouldn't let them fall.
"Sophie, you don't have to feel pressure. None of this is your fault and it's not your duty to fix everything. Right now, you need to stop worrying about the Neverseen. They want you to feel this way but those worthless souls don't deserve your time. Instead, focus on your family and friends and value what you have right now. Until, the Neverseen show any signs of a threat, then we can worry. But right now, we are fine," Grady explained.
He did have good points. But...it's not so easy to just forget that an organization is still out there that can ruin Sophie's life.
"How about this: why don't we discuss and focus on the good things that we have right now?" Edaline suggested.
"Oh yes! I can go first!" Grady exclaimed, his face suddenly lighting up. "Right now, the DNM are building me an even MORE advanced bat for me! It's supposed to be EPIC! MAN I JUST CAN'T WAIT TO USE IT!"
Sophie could tell that her father was already plotting schemes to use his bat with which Sophie most certainly did not approve. Sophie shook her head in annoyance.
"Oh my goodness! Grady! Are you serious right now? I am trying to help our daughter right now and you are NOT helping!" Edaline huffed, whacking Grady on the head.
Grady frowned. "You're no fun," he muttered with a sad face.
Edaline rolled her eyes and turned back to Sophie. "Hmm...oh I know! What about Keefe? How has he been doing?"
Sophie felt her face heat up as Grady's expressed quickly changed as if he hadn't just been crying over his precious bat.
"NOT THAT BOY AGAIN! LOOKS LIKE I WILL BE NEEDING MY BAT!" Grady exclaimed, dashing off to his stash of bats.
"Oh my gosh, dad stop," Sophie begged as she covered her face in embarrassment.
Edaline giggled. "Well Sophie, how is he? I bet you miss him now that he's in college."
"AND THAT'S ANOTHER REASON I NEED MY BAT! YOU SHOULDN'T TRUST THOSE COLLEGE BOYS!" Grady called from down the hall.
"DAD STOP! KEEFE IS A NICE BOY!" Sophie called back, her face turning a dark shade of red now.
"UHUH, WHAT ABOUT WHEN HE STOLE ONE OF MY BATS THE OTHER DAY AND DENTED IT! I SWEAR I'M GOING TO KILL THAT BOY THE NEXT TIME I SEE HIM," Grady yelled back from where he was still scrambling to search for his stash of bats.
"Anyways," Sophie said, turning back to Edaline. "Keefe is doing fine right now. He said he is doing well with his studies and he's really excited for his huge performance that will be happening in a few months. It's going to be a huge opportunity for him."
"That's good to hear!" Edaline exclaimed.
Keefe had been invited to perform at this huge theatre and was told it could be a great opportunity to kick off his opera career. It was a huge deal and Sophie couldn't wait to see him perform.
Sophie and Edaline then discussed other goods things that had happened recently, and Sophie had to admit that it did help a little.
Grady came back, not too long after, and was already doing some practice swings.
"Oh! I have an idea," Edaline exclaimed.
"What idea?" Sophie asked.
"Well, if you really want to be on the safe side with the Neverseen, I think we should create a help symbol," Edaline suggested.
"A help symbol? What do you mean?" Sophie asked.
"Well, I'm not saying that anything bad is going to happen, but just in case, I think if one of us were to get taken or hurt, we should create a symbol that we can use to get help," Edaline replied.
"Like, if I were to be kidnapped or something, and I were to get a chance, I could like draw out a symbol on the sidewalk or wall or just anywhere and when you guys go to find me, at least you have a lead as to where I'm at," Edaline continued.
"Hmm...I mean, I don't think that will do much because it's hard for a symbol to be noticed but if we make it too noticeable it would be way too suspicious," Sophie pointed out.
"Well, there's nothing wrong with having a back up plan," Edaline countered.
"I guess," Sophie mumbled.
"So...what should our symbol be?" Edaline asked.
"OH! I KNOW! A DRAWING OF A BAT! AND THEN WE COULD PUT FIRE AROUND IT AND SPIKES!" Grady exclaimed, jumping up.
"Oh my gosh! DAD! ENOUGH WITH THE BAT!" Sophie exclaimed, throwing her hands up.
"Wait a minute, I mean, that could work. It's very original so we would never mistaken it as something else...and anything with a bat would catch your father's attention right away..." Edaline mumbled.
"SEE?! PURE GENIUS!" Grady exclaimed, pointing to himself as he gave Sophie a smug look.
Sophie rolled her eyes. "This is ridiculous."
"IT IS MOST DEFINITELY NOT!" Grady argued.
Edaline sighed. "I think it's time for some people to get rest now."
"Yeah, I'm pretty tired," Sophie agreed, starting to walk away to her room.
She was actually really tired. She had barely gotten any sleep lately.
"Hey, you won't give your mother and father a hug before you go to bed?" Edaline asked, crossing her arms.
Sophie sighed and gave a small smile as she turned back around to give them hugs.
"Goodnight," Sophie murmured.
"Goodnight kiddo," Grady said back. They then departed to their rooms.
Sophie got in her bed and tried to sleep but she just couldn't. She kept tossing and turning in her bed and suddenly her thoughts of the Neverseen started to come back.
Sophie kept staring out her window as if she expected the Neverseen to just pop out and grab her.
Or maybe they were just watching.
Like her stalker. AKA Zach.
Ugh she hated that guy.
Sophie then noticed that it was starting to rain hard, lightning flashing across the sky.
With each flash, Sophie felt more fear rise in her and every frightening thing she had ever thought of was coming back to her.
She felt herself get weaker and she felt so anxious.
At any moment they could take her.
Sophie couldn't stand not knowing. She just wished they would just give her a heads up before they kidnapped her or something.
She just hated surprises.
Sophie finally gave up when tears started to fall down her face. For some reason, she was feeling more fear inside her than ever before.
Without realizing, Sophie had gotten up from her bed and had grabbed her rain coat.
She slipped it on and quietly made her way downstairs. She slipped on some random shoes and quietly opened her front door and walked outside.
Instantly, she shivered from the rain and put her hood up before her hair could get soaked.
It was dark out, the sounds of all the rustling and rain and booms swarming around her.
Take me, she wished.
It was selfish of her but she couldn't stand just waiting around. If the Neverseen were going to take her, they should do it now. She didn't want to wait.
"HELLO! I'M RIGHT HERE! JUST TAKE MEEEE!" Sophie shouted out in the rain, sobbing as she threw her hands up in the air.
"I KNOW YOU ARE HERE! THIS IS YOUR CHANCE! JUST TAKE ME!" Sophie yelled even louder, her throat hurting.
Only the pouring rain was her reply.
Sophie then collapsed on her knees, not caring how much it hurt.
She was scared and alone.
So scared she wanted the Neverseen to just take her.
But of course they wouldn't. They would never allow Sophie to be able to make any decisions. They called the shots and they wouldn't ever let Sophie decide.
That's the kind of people they were. They wanted all of the control.
Sophie had no control.
WELL THAT WAS THE FIRST CHAPTER AND THIS IS ONLY THE BEGINNING! We have a farrrrr journey ahead!!
