Chapter 32 - Phoebe
The buzzer on the wall signalled someone at the door and I shrank back into the sofa. How would he react?
Especially when it was my fault we were there when the pictures would taken? His message this morning had seemed blunt but in the next few minutes he was rushing over here. It was such a contradiction and then I began questioning if he was angry, upset or concerned.
No amount of reassurance from Sam or Cara would calm me as I watched that door and waited.
It was Sam who had suggested I get in touch with him and clarify the situation once and for all seeing as our behaviour last night had been nothing but a bunch of mixed signals.
I hadn't expected him to rush over here but I knew there would be no talking him out of it so I had just panicked and tried to make myself more presentable.
The buzzer went again and I looked over, Cara was looking at me with the receiver to her ear and a finger on the button to unlock the door. "You ready?" she asked.
I nodded, tucking my knees up to my chest in a defensive movement.
There was a click as she buzzed him up and moved to the door. I took a couple of deep breaths and then the door opened. To my utter humiliation, the moment I saw him my eyes filled with tears. I swiped them away with the back of my hand and our eyes met.
He crossed the room in three strides and dropped to his knees beside me, taking hold of my hands in his. The situation reminded me of when he rescued me from the press at the video launch and during my anxiety moment last night.
In fact, him on his knees beside me was becoming an oddly familiar sight. "Are you ok?" he asked, his voice warm and full of concern.
Just like that my fear melted away. I tugged his hand and gestured for him to sit next to me. "Yeah, are you?"
"I'm used to it." He laughed bitterly as he shifted up onto the seat.
"Doesn't mean it doesn't annoy you."
He smiled wryly, "Very true. But I'm more concerned about you and how you're dealing with it."
"I'm-" I paused as I struggled to find the right words, "managing."
"I'm sorry to interrupt, but I think we need to talk strategy." Sam's soft voice interrupted before Elliott could respond.
Elliott glanced up and looked around the room as though suddenly noticing there were other people in it. He took in Sam who watched us calmly from the armchair, "Elliott Hawk, I don't believe we've met?" he said smoothly, using the fan smile I was finding easier to recognise, and offering his hand.
"Sam Choa, I'm with Halo PR and here to help with however you guys want to manage this." Sam stood and leaned over the coffee table to shake his hand.
They both nodded and an awkward silence fell.
Cara was the one to break it, "So how do you guys want to manage it?"
I looked at Elliott for a response. He was the one who dealt with this type of thing all the time and I wasn't entirely sure where we stood. "Well," Elliott said slowly, "I think its pointless trying to deny we are seeing each other now so I'm happy to confirm it and ask them to respect our privacy?" he looked at me to see if I agreed.
I nodded, unable to stop myself smiling like an idiot as he confirmed that the feelings between us weren't one sided. He liked me. Actually liked me. And he was happy to tell the world. I looked at Sam for guidance on how we would do this. I couldn't imagine how telling them we were dating would do anything to calm the attention on us but I wasn't the expert here.
"What are your thoughts on a couples interview?" he said, typing away at the laptop balanced precariously on his knees.
"Bit early for that." Elliott laughed patting my arm and I realised I was crushing his hand.
"Sorry." I mumbled, blushing and trying to pull my hand back.
"Just breathe." He reminded me as he pulled my hand back and began gently rubbing his thumb back and forth over the back of my hand.
"So," Sam said, "I've drafted up this statement, I'm guessing you have a team it needs to go through Elliott?"
"That would be me." Victoria stepped forward and I noticed her and Jake hovering in the doorway for the first time.
She stepped around us and picked up the laptop, scanning the statement with a serious expression.
"Looks good but can you send it to our brand manager as well?" she fished a battered looking business card out of her pocket and handed it to him.
"No worries." Sam fired the email off quickly and then returned his attention to us, "Do you guys want me to read it out to you?"
I nodded quickly, if this was supposed to be our statement, I wanted to know what it said. Sam lifted the laptop so it balanced on the arm of the chair he was in and began, "So I've decided to write it from Elliott as he is the bigger celebrity here." He shot me and apologetic look but I waved it off, I had been very clear that I didn't want to be a celebrity so I was fine with Elliott taking the focus. "So that statement is - Hi all, just a quick note to explain what's going on. You may have noticed stories and pictures about myself and Phoebe Summers in the press recently and I just wanted to set the record straight. We are seeing each other but it is early stages which is why we haven't released any comments or statements before now. But you're not just fans, you're my family and that is why I know you'll respect our privacy as we get to know each other and see where this goes. All my love E."
He looked up at Elliott, to gage his reaction and I did to. Elliott nodded slowly, "So I'm guessing you want this our on my social media and we let the press pick it up from there?" he asked.
Sam nodded, "Exactly, in addition you're going to need to give the press a couple of good photo opportunities. Did you have plans today?"
I was a little insulted that the question was only directed at Elliott and rolled my eyes. Elliott glanced at Victoria, "You've got interviews this afternoon but free before then." She said without looking at her calendar.
I was mildly impressed. I couldn't even remember what I had for breakfast yesterday. Breakfast? Nanna!
I jolted upright, startling Elliott beside me who immediately tried to see what was wrong but I was already pulling out my phone and dialling. With it pressed to my ear, I held my breath, counting the rings.
It usually took a good seven or eight as she searched for the phone and finally she answered, "Hello, Mrs Summers speaking?"
"Nanna, it's me."
Elliott leaned back into the seat as soon as he realised who it was and I was grateful because as concerned as I was about Nanna, Elliott was very distracting when he sat that close to me.
"Little Bee! How was your date?" she asked eagerly, and I could imagine her waggling her eyebrows.
"How did you know about that Nanna?" I laughed.
"Cara told me darling, now answer the question."
"It was good." I said evasively, shifting so I couldn't see Elliott anymore.
"Just good? Wait, is he there right now?"
She was too observant for her own good, "Yes." I replied, feeling myself blushing.
"Did he stay the night? Oh you little minx, do we need to have the safe sex talk? Finally!" she cackled too loud and I turned the volume down, praying no one had heard
"Oh god. No Nanna!" the light blush on my cheeks turned into a burning tomato of embarrassment, "He came over this morning?"
"Oh," she sounded disappointed, "Less exciting. But if he's there I'm assuming it went well?"
"It did, I just wanted to let you know that the newspapers found out and things have gotten a little crazy, but I don't want you to worry. I'm going to sort things and I will be back after lunch."
"Of course, Bee, don't worry. I am perfectly capable of looking after myself for a morning." She chuckled.
I laughed in reply and resisted the urge to point out I had been gone all yesterday as well. The idea that I might be neglecting her because of this was what hurt the most.
"Well I will see you later Nanna. I love you to the moon and back."
"And more than all the stars." She replied, sounding a little surprised as I brought back the familiar goodbye ritual we hadn't used since I was a child.
I hung up and found myself staring at the phone in my lap for a minute before I set my face into a look of determination and looked up, "So what do you need us to do?"
