Chapter 24

I can still feel it. The thunder was no longer the rain but my heart beating out of my chest out of fear what he is going to say next.

His gaze was plastered onto my own, and I waited. I waited for him to say anything.

Cassian was a lot of things, but he was never nervous or shy. But right this second, he was just that. His breath was slow and steady. His hands were trembling slightly.

"What is it?" I asked, my voice coming out desperate.

"I've wanted to tell you this since I got back," he ran his hand through his hair, chuckling. "But it never felt like it was the right time," he said.

"What makes you think it is now?" I teased, raising my eyebrows. He laughed again.

"It may not be, but I should still tell you," he said. His face turned serious, and I knew this was going to be something important.

Something that might change everything or nothing at all. I sense it in Cassian's gaze; he was trying hard to find the right words.

But I never found out what that important thing was before a loud crash came from the door.

I suddenly felt a relieve wash over me.

Cas and I both jumped and moved ten steps back from eachother.

"What was that?" I was the first to speak. He shook his head. "I'm not sure. Let me go check," he said before I even had the chance to stop him; he had already walked towards the living room.

"What the fuck!" He screamed suddenly, and I rushed to see who or what that was.

At the door stood a soaked blonde girl with ripped blue jeans and a blue hoodie over her. Her hair was trenched, and her makeup was running all over her face.

"Who the fuck is this, Cas?" She asked. She was shooting daggers into my head. But Cassian ignores her. "What are you doing here, Lex?" He asked.

"What do you mean what am I doing here?" she put a hand on her hips. "I wanted to see my boyfriend," I looked up at Cas, who looked annoyed as ever.

Girlfriend? I didn't imagine Cas dating anyone.

"I'm gonna go take a shower, Cassy, and we can talk later, okay?" She said, making her way to the bathroom but not before giving me one last look of disgust before leaving.

Cassy?

She seemed to have been familiar with the lake house. She even had a key.

"Is she your girlfriend, Cas?" I asked him.

"No! I mean, not really," he shrugged his shoulder.

"What do you mean not really?" I asked, taking a seat on the couch.

"I mean, she's one of my dad's coworker's daughter. We hooked up a few times, but we're not together," he said.

"Are you sure? She has a key to your lake house," I questioned.

"Ya about that? We usually hang out here," he mentioned. "I guess she might have come here thinking I would be here,"

"But didn't you just fix this place up a couple of months ago?"

"Ya..." he said awkwardly. "We still, you know..." he paused for a moment. "Came here often. That's why I gave her a key, "

Oh.

I nodded my head.

"Well, then I should probably leave if you guys are gonna be busy," I said.

"No way! You're not leaving you spending the night. I'm not letting her bother you," he came to sit next to me.

And once again, I looked into his eyes, and I felt it too. I couldn't understand where all of this was coming from, but I feel it in the pits of my stomach.

Lexi cleared her throat, making us break our eye contact and move away from each other. We both looked up at her, wearing nothing but one of Cassian's huge hoodies and her hair wrapped in a towel. "You're out the shampoo," she said before making her way to the couch and sitting right on Cassian's lap.

I moved further to the side. Cassian gave me a look but didn't push her off.

"What are you doing here, Lexi?" Cas asked her.

"Oh well, I was coming to see you. I went to your house, but you weren't there, so I assumed you were here," she said.

"You came in the rain?" I asked but regretted it as soon as I did.

"Who the fuck are you anyway?" She asked, looking back at me.

"She's my friend. Don't talk to her that way," he warned her.

"Okay, but why is your friend here?" She asked, scanning her eyes all over my body. I immediately felt insecure. She had a perfect thin body, and I knew she was judging me of my own.

"She has every right to be here. Frankly, your the one that shouldn't be here," he pushed her off and got up. She stumbled back and groaned, annoyed.

"What the fuck, Cas?" She yelled her hands in the air.

Cassian merely shrugged his shoulder and ignored her.

I watched him as he left to the kitchen, and got on my feet and followed behind.

I had hoped Lexi wouldn't follow, and to my relief, she hadn't. Probably still dazed that Cassian actually pushed her.

Cassian sighed a sigh of relief when he noticed me behind him.

"Thank gosh, it's you," he said.

"She's is your girlfriend- or whatever. Why don't you go talk to her," I suggested?

"She is a nightmare," he said, opening the microwave and taking the bag of popcorn we had left in there for a while now. "Besides, she's stubborn," he opened the bag and ate some.

"That doesn't matter, Cas. You should still go, " even though I didn't receive a welcoming and nice vibe from Lexi. I knew it would only be right Cas did talk to her.

He rolled his eyes. "Fine. But don't yell at me when she screams and shouts," he said before going back to the living room of the house.

I waited silently in the kitchen, not wanting to pry. But I couldn't help but hear their conversation.

"So you rather fuck her?" She shouted.

"I didn't say that, Lex. How many times do I have to tell you? Storm is my friend!" He exclaimed.

"You're a liar," she screamed. I heard a loud thud.

"What the fuck?" Cassian yelled.

I knew standing here doing nothing will not be any good. But I was afraid of getting in the middle of their argument.

"I should have known you are a piece of shit," she yelled again. "You're a lying bastard!"

That's it! I couldn't stand here any longer.

I made my way to them. Lexi was standing with anger fuming inside her. She had a pillow in her hand, ready to throw it at Cas, who was standing opposite of her.

Her eyes drifted to mine, and my eyes widened. She lifted the pillow she was about to throw at Cassian and threw it right at my face.

It took me a few seconds to realize what had happened.

Cassian instead opened his mouth, but once again, the door of the lake house turned wide.

We all turned our heads quickly to the front door, all of us forgetting for a moment what we had been arguing about.

"Who are you?" Lexi asked.

"Liam?" Cassian said next. "Does no one care about the storm outside? How are you even showing up here?" Cassian asked no one really.

Liam rolled his eyes and made his way inside, closing the door behind him.

I hadn't thought about Liam since I had left the party.

I hadn't even know how he even knew I was here.

"What are you doing here, Liam?" I asked him.

"Where did you go?" He asked. "I was looking for you at the party. But you weren't anywhere, so I assumed you had gone home, and when I went there, your mom told me you were here," he said.

"So you came all the way here?" I questioned him.

"What is going on here? Who the fuck are you?" Lexi interrupts him.

Liam didn't even glance her way or answer her question. He only kept looking at me.

My eyes slowly found Cassian's instead, who seemed to be confused and annoyed at the same time.

I had no idea how any of this happened. Cassian and I had come here to get away from the rain, but the biggest storm was happening right inside this house.

"Let them be Lex," Cassian said, taking hold of Lexi's arm and went into the kitchen.

Before he had left, our eyes locked for a moment, and again, the thunder returned inside my chest.
