Chapter 20
After a long stressful morning, I was so glad for lunch. I think we all were.
"I can't believe it's finally over," Sarah said, with a breath of relief.
This morning we all had to write our final test for our chemistry class before our exam. It was one class we all hated the most, and it was a relief that it was finally over for sure.
"Couldn't agree with you more," Nathan next to her said. "I can finally focus on the game now," he let out.
"Do you guys think you'll win tonight?" I asked him.
"There's no doubt in that,"
This was their last lacrosse game of the season. Nathan was pretty excited. I've been to his practices a couple of times, and he was always really good.
So I was sure that they would win as well.
"Well, either way, we'll all be there to support you," Sarah said, with a smile, which Nathan returned.
"Do you guys want to go together?" Skyler asked.
"Ya! We can just go over to my house after school and hang out for a bit and then go," I suggested.
They both shook their head.
"Well, you girls all have fun. I've got to go now," Nathan said, getting up from the table and leaving with a wave.
"So you think they'll win?" Sky asked with a snicker.
"Why do you ask that?" Sarah asked her.
"I don't know. The rival team is really good,"
"Trust me, we're also pretty good," I told her.
-
Sky took a fluffy sweater out of my closet and squealed loudly.
"Fluffyyyyyy," she hugged the shirt.
Sarah and I both laughed.
"I really don't understand your obsession with fluffy things," Sarah said.
"Me neither," I agreed. "But if you like that sweater, you can have it, Sky," I told her with a smile.
"Really???" She squealed once again. This time she was jumping up like a child.
I giggled and nodded my head. "I haven't worn that sweater since forever, so you can have it," I told her.
She rushed to me, throwing her arm around me. "Thank you, thank you, thank you," she said in excitement. I hugged her back. "Of course," I said.
And we all fell into laughter.
"So guys, tell me what's new with you guys?" Sky asked, taking her seat in between Sarah and me on the bed.
"Well, nothing with me," Sarah said.
"Oh? I notice you eyeing my brother at times," Sky said with a smirk.
Sarah's eyes widen. She hadn't expected her to say that neither did I.
"Well, of course, we all know he likes you. But what about you?" She asked.
"Sky!" I yelped. "You don't have to answer if you're not comfortable," I told her.
"No, no. It's okay. I might as well tell someone. Who better than my friends," she said with a sigh. "I do like your brother Sky..." she said. And I almost screamed.
I had wanted her to say that since forever. Maybe even more than Nathan had. But I also thought about her feeling for Luke.
"But I like someone else too," she said. She played with her fingers and hung her head low like she always does when she's nervous.
Sky gasped. "Who?" She asked.
Sarah looked at me. I knew she was debating saying his name out loud. I knew she didn't want to either. It was all the feeling I felt with Liam.
But she decided on telling Sky.
"Luke..." she whispered.
"Who?" Sky asked, edging closer.
"Luke!" she said louder.
Sky's face turned into a scowl, and she looked disgusted. "You like that messed up, bastard?" She questioned. "He hurt you!" She yelled.
"Sky, you have to understand. You don't know him as I do," she said.
"Well, I'm sure of that," she said, rolling her eyes. "But it's not like I can say anything," she mumbled. "So, you like my brother and that abuser," she said.
Skyler had always said what she thought. I don't think she even realizes she had hurt Sarah by saying that. Sarah's face fell once again, and I knew she felt guilty and ashamed. It was a feeling I was all too familiar with.
I reached for her hand and smiled at her.
"Don't say that, Sky. She can't help her feeling. None of us can," I told her.
She didn't seem fazed by that. "I'm sorry, Sarah. I didn't mean it like that. I'm sorry. I just didn't expect you to say him," she said.
"It's okay," she said, smiling at her. Skyler wrapped her arm around her neck.
"What about you, Storm? Anything with you?" She asked, looking at me.
Something did happen—something I didn't expect.
"Ya! how was your date?" Sarah asked.
How was I going to tell them?
"Well... I didn't go,"
"What?" Sarah said, surprised. "Why? what happened?" She asked.
I wanted to tell them. I tried to say to them about everything. But I was afraid to get them involved. All of them had told me not to get involved many times but would saying it to them ruin everything.
"I couldn't go at the last minute," I lied.
"Good, I'm glad. You deserve better anyway," Skyler informed me.
"I'm sorry, Storm," Sarah said, with a genuine sad smile.
"It's okay! It was for the best," I lied again.
I hated lying to them. They were my friends, and I knew telling them would be good for me. They would at least tell me what to do. Even if they don't know what to do themselves, they will listen, and that seemed to have been enough.
So I changed my mind. Lying wouldn't do any better for me.
I knew Skyler wouldn't like what I'm going to say, but I still had to tell someone.
"Actually, I need to tell you guys something..." I opened my mouth.
They looked at me. Their eyes filled with curiosity. And they were ready to hear everything. And I told them everything.
Everything from that club and the night with Liam. Though I didn't mention much of that night, I had told them the just of it.
Everything that happened that night was only between Liam and me. It was something that clouded my mind all day—nothing from that night I had expected.
"Wait, so you guys kissed?" Sarah asked.
"Ya," I said.
"They did a lot more than just kiss Sarah," Skyler said. I could hear the disgust in her voice. "Wait, did you say bat wings tattoo?" She suddenly asked as if she remembered something.
"Ya, why? It's their club's logo," I shrugged my shoulder.
"Do you have like a picture of it?" She asked me.
I was about to say no, but then I remembered that I still had the keychain from last time. I went over to my nightstand drawer and pulled it open and grabbed the keychain, and handed it to Sky.
She looked almost shocked to see it.
"What's wrong, Sky?"
"I always wondered why one of the guy I used to date and all of his friends had this tattoo, but now it makes sense. He was also part of the group," she said.
"Who?" I asked her.
"He went to my old school. His name is Jace. Jace Allen," she said, and I almost choked on my spit.
I felt my pulse quicken, and I noticed Sarah stare.
"You used to date him?" She asked him.
"Ya. Why? What's wrong?" She asked, shaking her head at both of us. "Why are you guys acting suspicious?" She asked.
"Storm, and he had a thing," Sarah said.
"We didn't have a thing, Sarah. We didn't have anything," I told her. My tone was sharper than I intended.
"Sorry," she said, and I could see that she felt terrible.
"No, no, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to say it like that," I said.
"Wait, you know Jace?" Sky asked, confused.
I nodded my head. "But Nate never told me you guys dated," I said.
"Well, we didn't date for that long, but I'm still surprised," she scratched the side of her neck. "But even if he's involved in those things, Jace is a good guy," she said.
And until I found out Jace was involved in Noah's accident, I had believed he was a good guy. It was the same thing Nathan had told me.
I had never told anyone about what Jace had done to anybody. The only people that know were the people that knew Noah. I surely didn't know how to say to them either.
But even thinking about Jace made my blood boil entirely. I don't know how I'll ever be able to forgive him. The idea of even facing him makes me terrified.
The last time I had seen him was at the hospital before I had run away.
"Nate even invited him to the game," she said, and I felt my heart just drop.
