Chapter#8 "My Simplicity"
Just like what Jeonghan has promised, he already made an escape plan for his mom overnight. To gain it, I have a huge participation which might risk my life. But if Wonwoo and I help will each other, we could succeed.
Since our hospital's job task rotation is about to come, we tried to work in fast pace. As for that, Wonwoo and I met last night and talked 'bout our plan. It was really an awkward meeting for me because I am so embarrassed with that 'pajama stripping incident' which occurred in my house before. Yet... yeah... Wonwoo was so nonchalant I thought getting all worked out is such a waste.
"Patient Robert, I'm here for your food."
I opened the locked room of 16th patient at the last floor I am assigned at. If there is a patient I wanted to avoid as much as possible, it is Robert — a 35-year-old widow. His wife died by the hands of a thief and it left traumatic scar on him which made his psychological state broke down. There are times when he's calm, but mostly, he is violent if someone approaches him.
"What do you want?! You already killed my wife! What else will you take from me?!" His eyes bulged in enraged then vertical wrinkles appeared between his eyebrows. "I'll kill you! I'll kill you!" He tried so hard to untie the rope on his hand as he glared at me with lips curling upward.
Seeing people like him is nothing new for me. But still, fear is always there at the corner of my sympathetic heart.
"I won't kill you Patient Robert." I pushed my food cart and placed a bowl of porridge on the table where his hand could reach. "I'm here to..."
'Bam! Krrrrrrrrrrrsssssss!'
"Ahhhh!"
My mouth drawn back as I looked at my bleeding right hand. It was a
piece of broken hard plastic bowl which Robert threw on the ground that cut my skin. After seconds, I felt the tingling sensation that became more painful as time passes by. 'I should be thankful that it didn't get onto my face.'
"I'll kill you! I'll kill you!" Robert kept on screaming until nurses walked in to help.
"Are you okay? Your hand is bleeding," one of the nurses asked me while other tried to calm the patient. "You should treat it right away. Here, I'll give Patient Yoon food instead."
'No! There's something we will talk about so it should be me!'
"I'm okay. It just a scratch," I excused.
"You sure?"
"Uhhh. I'll go treat it after visiting Patient Yoon's room."
"Okay. Be careful."
I pressed my injured hand with a white towel, hoping that the bleeding will stop, before I pushed my cart on the way to his room. My hand was trembling so hard when I unlocked his door though.
Unlike before, Jeonghan is widely awake; sitting on his bed as if he was really waiting for my arrival. Weirdly, I felt happy with this simple cliche setting.
"Patient Han, here is your food." I pushed my cart inside and waited until I closed the door so I could talk without acting. "Wonwoo showed me the blueprint of our hospital. I think we could start tomorrow."
What I was expecting to receive was his satisfied grin after hearing my news. But when I reached his side, Jeonghan suddenly held my wrist and pulled me closer. Worst, he pulled the hand that throbbing in pain. "Ahhh~" I winced.
"What happened to your hand?" He asked, crumpling his face.
I don't know if it is because I already have accepted my feelings for him but when he holds me, my pain disappeared. My gawk stayed on his worried face: his furrowed brows, straight nose, droopy eyes and his slightly hanged open thin lips. Ever since, his beauty made me speechless.
"Ohhh," he uttered then unclasped my hand. He looks like someone who realized that he just made a mistake just now.
'Oh yeah. I almost forgot that he might already know that I like him. Damn.'
"A patient next room threw a pit." I bowed down after my short explanation.
"I see. Then you should treat it instead of coming here."
"I must not. We have limited time left so our plan comes first."
Once again, our eyes met. His right brow pulled upward, followed by a little tilting back of his head; making his gaze down on his nose. He might be feeling contempt, assuming he was being lied to.
Well, I can't blame him. At the beginning, I decided to help them because my life was threatened. And putting my feelings aside, I can't bring that seeing his mom's situation is my main reason for helping.
After being wordless for a while, he finally opened his lips with a smile. "Then let's make our conversation quick."
"Okay," I said while putting his food on the table with my left hand. But Jeonghan stood up then helped me by grabbing what's on my hand and then finished placing every foods on his table. Afraid that someone might caught us, I turned back towards the entrance. It was fortunate that no one was there outside. Phew~
"Forget it. Let's talk after you finalized the plan with Wonwoo tonight," he whispered on my ear.
Ticklish, I quickly looked back at him; only to find that our faces have almost touch.
Based on his reaction, it seemed he also didn't see this coming — us, looking strangely at each other and me, blushing so hard.
Before I do something silly, I stepped back. My heart is pounding so loud, I'm afraid he'll hear it.
"Wonwoo must treat your wound. Or else, I'll fire him," he said apathetically before he laid down on his bed and faced the white painted wall.
'If there's a thing I am regretting, then it's my simplicity. My one-sided crush is so obvious, there's no space for excuses.'
While I aid my wound at treatment facility, that's when I realized that Jeonghan's last words are actually his command for secretary Wonwoo.
"Wonwoo can hear our conversation," I whispered.
"What?" Nurse, who is currently sewing my wound, has stopped to ask me what I was mumbling about.
"No no no. Nothing."
Before logging out of my shift, I received ointment to put on my wound every night. It is free. IT SHOULD BE. Then as expected, Wonwoo was waiting for me at the parking lot.
'Day and night I'm having secret meeting with handsome guys,' I noticed. But in exchange, I haven't sleep well these past few days.
Wonwoo brought me beside the Han river where we also talked inside his car last night.
"That means you have exactly 20 minutes to sneak at the director's office," he explained.
I understood everything but don't have energy to respond. 'Gosh. I'm so sleepy.'
"How's your wound, by the way?"
My eyes that seemed so heavy all of a sudden did its best to stay open. "Ahhh, this?" I showed my hand with bandage. "It's okay. They treat it and even gave me medicine to apply. You don't need to treat me just like what Jeonghan said before."
"Why would I treat a wound that is already treated?" Wonwoo asked a rhetorical question. He buckled his seatbelt and brushed his hair upward. "When sir Jeonghan said that I should treat your wound, he means I'll have to take care of you until you got home."
'Ahhh. Their telepathy is really amazing.'
'Wait! Does it mean...Jeonghan is worried at me to that extent?'
"Why are you smiling like that? It's creepy," Wonwoo commented at the side.
'Was I smiling?' Lost in my thoughts, I pulled back my creepy grin.
"Buckle your seatbelt. And sleep on the way," he added, turning on the engine and even playing a music from the radio.
With my last energy, I buckled my seatbelt and thanked him, "Thanks." Then I fell asleep.
.
.
.
'Where are I? I felt that something stopped moving. Also, my cheek felt wet too.'
Carefully, I opened my eyes. It took me seconds before my eyes adjusted on my surroundings.
'Ah! Wonwoo's car!'
"Ohh! We're here!" I gasped and quickly sat straight as if I was all aware. However...
"Here, use this." Wonwoo offered a tissue. For what? "Wipe your cheek."
'My cheek?'
I felt my heart skipped a beat just now, like LITERALLY.
"What are y-you s-saying? There's nothing I need to w-wipe!" I pretended then used the back of my left hand to wipe my cheek. But my saliva stick on my hand and made a long line like mozzarella cheese in a pizza.
'Omg! Why something like this always happened when he's present?!'
"Now it's your hand that you should wipe," he insisted, putting the tissue on my lap. What makes it more embarrassing is that this guy isn't laughing or showing any expressions.
Speeding like lighting bolt, I wiped my left hand then unbuckled my seatbelt. "I'm going now. Thanks for the ride." By accident, I used my right hand to open the door. But since it's injured, it hurts like hell. So I changed it into my left.
Alas, as I walked out of his car, I can breathe.
"Let's not look back to see his face, shall we?" I murmured.
"To whom?" But his baritone voice resonated by my side. Tilting my head, I saw him standing beside me.
"Why are you out?!"
"I'll accompany you till you walk inside your apartment."
'He looks smart but dumb at the same time. Can't he just take the hint that I am too embarrassed to look at his face?! '
Whatever. Meeting him for few times let me know that he is a person who isn't bothered by this.
And so, we walked together along the narrowed alleyway. We're not talking at each other until we arrived in front of my apartment unit.
"I'm here already. So you can go now. I can open the door by myself," I said.
"Who said I'll open the door for you? Your left hand is not injured."
'Freaking bastard,' is what I shouted only in my mind. Nevertheless, I just gave a faint smile.
"Take care on you way, secretary Jeon."
"I'll call you tomorrow."
If my neighbors see this, they may think he's my boyfriend by the way he talks. Imagining that is really funny.
"Okay. Bye." Laughing without sounds, I turned around and got my key from my inner pocket. When I inserted it on my doorknob, something feels off. "Oh?"
"Why?" Wonwoo, who still watching me from behind, inquired.
"My door. I'm sure I left it locked. Why is it...open?"
Slowly, I looked back at Wonwoo. Then we heard thud sounds of falling things inside my apartment.
To be continued...
