Chapter Twelve
The day rolls on, slowly, and with every ticking second that passes by, I got impatient. Can time not speed up? I avert my eyes from the old black and white clock, that hangs in front of the class room.
As soon as the bell rings, I bolt from seat and head out of my foreign class. I really want this day to be over with. I'm so glad it's Friday.
I walk into my last class and Mr. Dean is talking to the band teacher, Mrs. Ray.
Mr. Dean's eyes lands on me. "She's here, right now, if you want to ask her"
Mrs. Ray turns to face me. "Oh, Princess Millian, may I speak with you for a minute?"
I nod my head, already knowing what she wanted to know.
"I was just wondering when we'll have the lyrics for the Stand Up to Cancer performance?" She asks, proving my point.
The performance is set on October 9th and that leaves me about three weeks to work on it. Hardly even that. I'm falling behind. I really need to start working on it.
"I'll have it on your desk next week" I promise.
I pray that I can keep this promise. If not then I will have to cancel the whole thing and I don't want that.
"Okay. Sounds good" Mrs. Ray says.
"If you need help, just let me know." Mr. Dean says after Mrs. Ray leaves. " I can help you get started."
I sigh in relief. "Ohmigosh! Yes, please. I don't know why I though I could do it by myself"
"Everyone needs help every once and awhile." He tells me. "I'll work on it this weekend and give what I have done to you on Monday."
"Okay. Thank you" I tell him as the bell rings.
Lucas sits beside me. "Can you work on the song today?" He asks.
"Yeah we can work on it before I leave"
Mr. Dean talks about our assignment that is due exactly one week from today before separating us into three groups. The altos, the mid sopranos and the sopranos.
We go over our vocal range and sing an old song before Mrs. Kovok comes on the intercom.
"We tallied up all the votes" She says.
I forgot all about the audition we had this morning. I really need to pay more attention and focus. I can't help it. My mind likes to wonder and think about things that aren't important but are important at the same time.
For example, Hayes. I shouldn't be worried about him or cared for him but I do. I hate the fact he used me and my heart wasn't strong enough to stand its ground against him. Two months of knowing him and he had me in his claws. Two months was all it took to lure me into his game. I could blame it on the fact that it was kind of love I wanted but I knew the real reason. We both knew. It's simple. I love him and nothing will change that even if he doesn't love me. He'll always be the guy I fell for and nothing will change that.
As I stare at him, I should feel rage but I don't. I feel hurt. I'm more mad at myself than him and it doesn't make any sense. Nothing about us made sense.
My thoughts are cut off by Lucas waving his hand in front of my face.
"Did you hear what she said?" He asks.
I shake my head, aware of all eyes on me. I probably should've nodded my head but it's too late now.
"You won!" Sophie squeals, hugging me as she jumps up and down.
"I won?" I repeat.
"Yeah you won" Lucas clarifies.
Out the corner of my eyes, I see Ava rolling her eyes as she mutters something under her breath. For some reason, I expected her to cry and tell me I shouldn't have won but she doesn't.
"Congratulations, Millie" Mr. Dean tells me as the bell rings.
"Thank you." I say. "So is there anything I should know about the bash?"
"Not really" He shrugs. "You just have to come up with a song and run it by me the day before the bash"
My jaw drops. That's what Lucas and Sophie meant when we have to prepare for it weeks before it arrived.
"I have to write a song!" I exclaim. I can barely write the Stand up to Cancer song. "I thought you were giving me a song to sing"
Mr. Dean shakes his head. "No. Don't freak out." He says. "Writing a song is easy. It's basically what you're feeling or what you want the world to know about. Emotions are the key to writing."
"Okay so I just pick an emotion and I'll have my song"
"Yeah but there's more to it. Channel whatever you're feeling onto paper. Don't worry about it" He says when he sees the expression on my face.
I hope doesn't expect me write about love like Ava did. I probably would've wrote about it, if love wasn't a foreign word to me.
I meet Lucas in our usual music room along with Lily and her annoying guardian, Reid.
I drop my school bag and slide beside Lucas on the piano bench. I place my hand on the cool keys.
After a few minutes, Lucas asks. "You have nothing, do you?"
I drop my arms. "No."
He laughs and I resist the urge to hit him. He place his hands on the keys. "I've been messing around with a couple of songs" He informs me.
I nod my head. "So like a mash up?"
"Yeah I guess you can say that" He says. "Anyway this is what I got."
He begins playing a song that's suppose to be fast but slow before changing it to a different song, altogether.
I smile. "That's amazing." I praise him. "Oh!" I say getting an idea. "We should add two more songs, somewhere at the end. Mr. Dean said be as creative as you can and I bet you no one has thought about this."
"You're right" He agrees. "What songs are thinking about?"
"We can do another song about being young and a song by Band Perry."
He frowns and I roll my eyes as I play the two different songs.
"Okay I get now. So lets put them together."
After we mend the songs together, it's time for me to leave.
"Now we only have to work on the lyrics" I tell him as I stand up.
He smiles. "That's the easy part."
"I don't know what Lily sees in you" I tease.
"I could name a few things" He smirks.
"Please don't." I beg as I grab my bag.
"Bye Lily!" Lucas calls out.
She gives him a small wave but I can tell she wanted to kiss him.
Even though they can date, they didn't want to draw attention to them. I feel bad for them. They shouldn't have to worry about rumors getting spread or what anyone had to say. No one should.
We pile into the black SUV and Reid immediately turns on the radio. He must remember last time when the radio wasn't on. Lily hates when it's quiet and being the silent type you would think she would be okay with it being quiet but she's not.
I lay my head against the window and settled in for the half hour drive to the headquarters as Lily hums the song that's playing.
We drive in silence, no one bothers to make small talk. I try to keep my eyes off of Hayes but it's proven to be a more harder task seeing as he's sitting directly across from me.
"Hey!" Lily exclaims when Reid turned the station. "Turn it back!"
"I don't think you should be listening to song like that" Reid tells her.
"You act like we never heard about it" She replies. "We're not five."
Lily and Reid argued about the issues for about a good five minutes before Reid caves in.
Before Reid can turn it back, Lily stops him. Another song plays and Lily begins singing. This song isn't as bad as the other song but they have the same meaning.
If I was your girl If I was your girl, I'll give it to you all around the world
I couldn't help noticing how Hayes' eyes darts into the mirror to look at me. He only looks at me for a split second but fire spreads throughout my body.
I look out the window and stare as the tree pass by us. When we get to the headquarters, Abe is waiting for us.
I hop out the car and walk up the stone stairs where Abe is standing. I give him a quick hug before heading inside.
Abe doesn't question my quick escape and I'm glad. I hope he doesn't think I still hate him for leaving us thirteen years ago. I'm passed all that.
I hear him talking to Lily as I head to my room I stay in. It isn't late but I'm exhausted and I really want this tiring day to be over with.
I fall into my bed and my eyes are close before I hit the pillows.
