Chapter Four

I tune out Mr. Stan, my history teacher, as he drone on about nothing important. Well it probably is important but it isn't interesting to me. I lean my head on my palm, bored.

If I'm bored, I feel bad for the guys. They have to repeat their senior year again. They act like they don't mind but they really do.

I scan the room and everyone is either trying to paying attention or drawing in their notebook. Lily is drawing. She still haven't thought of what to draw yet. She studies her drawing and scrunches her nose in dislike.

"Miss. Millian?" Mr. Stan calls. "If you came out your daydream, would you like to explain to the class what I just said?"

Every head turns to stare at me and I look down. I knew I should've paid attention.

"Well?" Mr. Stan says. "We're waiting."

I glance up. "It had something to do with.." I start but decide to give up. "I don't what you said." I say in defend.

"You'll be figuring it out in detention."

I frown. Did I hear him correctly?

"Detention?" I repeat.

"Yes. You will write a report over what I said and present it to the class tomorrow." He tells me.

I didn't know you can get detention for not paying attention. But apparently you can.

"Are you serious?" I ask, angrily.

"Yes I am." He replies back before continuing on with his lesson.

Is barely the third day and I already got detention. I never been to detention. Who the hell gives you detention for not paying attention?

For the rest of the class period, I tried to listen to Mr. Stan and his talk about a war.

"I don't get it" I tell Lily as we walk to our next class. "Why am I getting detention for?"

"For not paying attention" Lily replies back.

"Well if that's the case, then everyone in that class should get detention, not just me."

Lily shrugs. "I guess. But don't beat yourself up over it. It's just detention"

I roll my eyes. "It's not fair." I say, stepping into Anatomy. "He can't do that"

"Well he did, Millie" Lily say.

Time flies back and before I know it, school is over.

"We need to work on the song?" Ava tells me.

"I can't" I say, grabbing my bag.

"Why not?" She demands. "We only have today and tomorrow to work on it."

"I know. I guess we have to work on tomorrow." I glance at the clock. "Gotta go."

I walk out the room and down the hall to the detention room.

I see Lily and she smiles. "Have fun in detention"

I roll my eyes as I open the door and walk in.

"I'm sorry you have to be stuck with me for another two hours." I tell Hayes.

"It's okay." Hayes says. "It's my job."

He leans against the wall and crosses his arms over his chest. I open the the thick history book and grab a pen.

Time to get this over with.

***

I'm not looking forward to Mr. Stan's class. It isn't because I didn't finish his stupid assignment, oh believe me I got it done. It's because I didn't want to do it. Okay fine. I had a hard time paying attention but it's history.

I slam my report on my desk and look Stan in his eyes. If it wasn't for Hayes, this report would never have gotten finished. I dozed off a couple of times.

Mr. Stan begins talking about our home planet and how it came to be. I wait for him to tell me to present my report but he doesn't. Did he forget? It didn't seem likely but you never know.

"I didn't do this report for the fun of it" I say.

"It's for your benefit, not mine." Mr. Stan says.

"Really?"

The more I spend my days here, the more I start to hate this place. I rip the report in half and throw in the trash. I spend two freaking hours looking that information up, another one hour putting it together and for what? For nothing. That time I wasted I could've been helping Ava with our song.

I hate high school. I hate Mr. Stan. I'm in the mood to put up with Ava and her bossy attitude so everything she said, I agree with her.

"Okay so near the end, I need you to give it everything you have." Ava tells me. "And try not to over power me, okay. They need to hear me too."

Ava is a strong singer but she's afraid to push pushed her limits. She wants me to hit the high notes because supposedly her throat hurts.

After our last practice, I find Sophie working with her partner, Zach.

"How's it going?" I ask.

"It's going." She tells me. "It could be better but Zach never wants to practice." Sophie shifts her eyes to Hayes. "Can you talk to him?"

"I doubt he'll listen to anything I say." Hayes tells her.

She shrugs. "It was worth the try" Her green eyes brightens up. "Millie can you help me?"

"With?" I ask.

"The song" She says. "You promised you'll help me."

I did say that. "Well why not, I'm already here. Might as well." I look at Hayes. "Only if you're okay with it."

"Hayes doesn't mind, do you?" Sophie says looking at him.

He smiles at her. "No. But make it quick. I have to go to a meeting."

I arch my eyebrow. I didn't know he had a meeting. I wonder what it's about.

I face Sophie. "Okay. Show me what you can do."

"Sophie we're suppose to work on the song" Zach says, coming out the studio.

"Yeah I know but at this point, we're not getting anywhere." She tells him. "You can go now."

Zach shrugs. "Okay. See you later."

I stop Sophie half way in her song. "Sing that part again."

She does and I realize she's not confident in herself to hit that high note.

"Okay the only way you're going to get better is if you have faith in yourself." I say. "You can do it."

I think of a song with the note she was having trouble with.

"Okay do exactly what I do."

She nods her head and watch me carefully.

I'm gonna swing from a chandelier, from chandelier

I stop and Sophie begins singing but her voice cracks on the first chandelier.

"Hey, don't beat yourself over it." I tell her, touching her back. "I had a hard time hitting that note too."

"Really?" She asks.

I nod my head. "Yeah. I get scared too but when I'm singing I forget about everything and everyone. And the notes just flies out."

Hayes has too leave so we had to cut our practice short. We walk back to the dorms.

"Thank you for helping, Sophie" Hayes says.

I look at him, surprised. He never talks to me unless it has to do with his job.

"Um, you're welcome."

I could help others but I couldn't even help myself.
