Outline 15 | Chapter Two of 'Black Knight'

2 | ACCIDENTS HAPPEN

THE VERY, VERY, VERY BAD THING THAT WOULD CHANGE THE LIFE OF THE GRAY'S FOREVER WAS HAPPENING VERY, VERY, VERY SOON. The thing was that no one would ever suspect it, especially since the incident revolving 'The Vulture' was two months prior, no accident could happen so soon, or at least that's what everyone would think after it did.

It was later in the day after a long afternoon of studying and designing new robots when Paxton walked hand in hand with little Carson. Normally, Troy would be on the other side of Carson and be holding her hand, however, the girls stayed later afterschool and Troy had no reason to so he went home earlier then they.

The two had just gotten off the train and were walking towards their house when the thing that would change absolutely everything happened. It was nearing five in the evening and the traffic of New York was building, but the girls were too invested in their silly jokes to take care in the cars and honking horns.

After a shared laugh, Paxton looked at her six-year-old sister and smiled. Carson was skipping along the sidewalk, forcing Paxton to move faster, but she didn't mind because the largest smile was on her sister's face. "And then- and then, the pony went zoom!" she elaborated, using her free hand to make hand gestures in the air. The small blonde was talking about her favorite show My Little Pony and Paxton only knew what she was talking about because she watched every episode with her sister. It was a code they had, neither was allowed to watch the show without one another because it was their show.

"Yeah, and what happened after that?" Paxton wondered, reaching out to press the button for the crosswalk. Carson giggled to herself and shook her head, "And then Rainbow Dash flew over Ponyville and crash landed into the bakery!" she replied, throwing her hand in the air to add motions. Paxton laughed, "That's not good, is it?"

"No! But it sure was funny!"

As the girls conversed with one another, a certain vigilante watched carefully from the rooftop above them. He had a smile resting on his lips as he watched the two happiest people he ever knew just enjoy each other, and he wondered what was it that made them so happy. He had been neighbors with them for seven years, and in that time they had always been joyful no matter what. It was contagious, though, for when they passed him in the hallways and had smiles on their faces, he grew one, too.

As he continued watching them and makings sure they were safe, the girls crossed the street when they were able. Carson's hand was secure in Paxton's and the older sibling guided her sister along the crosswalk, keeping her eye on the glowing white walking symbol across the street. According to the system they had sixteen seconds left to cross, and they would have made it safely if not for one car.

Spider-Man noticed the danger before anyone else and in a rush he swung down from the building and latched onto a smaller shop across the street. He swung through the air, feeling as if everything was going in slow motion in the one second.

His body glided past cars and inbetween traffic, and in one moment, he slammed into Paxton to get her out of the way of the car that was hurling towards the crosswalk with no means of stopping. Paxton was thrown into the curb, a groan escaping her lips as she made contact with the cement.

She was confused, and when she didn't feel her sister's hand in her's, she looked up to see Carson standing in the crosswalk. She was frozen in fear and she stared ahead of her, watching the blinding headlights approach.

Paxton screamed and reached out for her sister, her name leaving her lips like someone was being murdered in front of her. Right as she screamed"Carson!" as loud as she could, the six-year-old was thrown into the air when the car collided with her. Paxton watched in absoulte horror as her sister tumbled over the hood of the automobile. Her body made contact with the pavement and everything seemed like it was frozen in time.

Carson's body fell limp on the road and hundreds of New Yorker's who had witnessed the accident were all gasping, some pulled their phones to contact the hospital, oters took pictures of the lisence plate of the car, and others had tears streaming down their faces as they watched such a young girl's life change forever.

Spider-Man stood to the side, goosebumps rising up his arms. He tried to save them both, yet he only saved one. He was the reason this happened, the reason smiles would become scarce for a family that could give smiles to the whole country. He had to watch as Paxton ignored the pain in her shoulder from her collision with the cement and scream mercy for her sister that was still laying in the road.

No one had made the attempt to run to her, all were frozen or confused. It wasn't until Paxton stuck out her hand and ran into the street that time seemed to start again. Drivers of vehicles had put their cars in park and stood in the road with their doors open and worry on their faces. Sirens were heard in the far off distance, alerting people that help was six minutes away. But Paxton didn't care to wait six minutes, she was determined to get to her sister instantly.

So she slid on her knees to her sister and gripped her shoulders, flipping her over so she laid on her back. Paxton was crying, screaming even, she was shaking her sister to wake up. People began to cry when the heard the sobs of Paxton Gray, and she looked back at the people watching and screamed "Do something! Please! Help her!"

One by one, several people rushed into the streets to help the young girl. One man was still on the phone with the hospital and he placed a hand on Paxton's shoulder as she leaned over and cried into Carson's chest. A woman had two fingers on Carson's neck, but there was no pulse. When she told Paxton this, the girl immediately retreated and watched as the woman began to attempt CPR, hoping to start little Carson's heart once more.

This was it, this was the very, very, very bad thing that would change Paxton's life forever. No one realized that, not even Pax as she turned and searched for the neighborhood Spider-Man. But he had fled in guilt and shame. He knew he would be needed back home when Aunt May would barge into his room with the terrible news that something not even six blocks away happened to Carson Gray and that they needed to rush to the hospital right away.

Peter Parker was ashamed, and if it was up to Paxton, he should've been, too.
