chapter three

Bullet wounds

MILO HAD ALWAYS HATED BEING THE YOUNGEST SIBLING. Sure, when he was little, there was perks, like blaming things on his older siblings, getting in trouble less than the others, and just having a good time torturing them every day. However, once he was ready to become an adult, his family wasn't ready to teach him as such.

"Hurry up, Mimi! We are supposed to be on the lookout." Avery whisper yelled at the boy, yanking at his sleeve.

Which is why he always ended up with the kids instead of the adults.

"I'm coming." The nineteen year old boy sighed, getting dragged along by his young niece and her new friend, Carl. "You guys are suspiciously strong for your age."

"Do you guys see it?" Carl whispered, pointing outward to a small baby deer who was eating a few leaves in the distance.

Milo looked backward to Shane, Rick, and , Sal who nodded their heads, giving him permission to let the kids go run at it.

"Should we pet it?" Avery whispered to Carl who placed a finger over his mouth, taking her hand as they walked closer to the animal.

Milo stayed close to them, prepared to protect both children if they needed it, that was seemingly his job these days anyway.

The trio inched closer to the animal, the youngest Romano looking around at his surroundings carefully as the two children were just a mere few feet away.

"Wait!" He noticed as a man not too far away pulled the trigger on his gun, the boy jumping in front of the kids. He felt like his world was going blank after that, searching his chest for wounds that weren't there.

Then, he turned around to see the bullet had slipped through where he dove, hitting Carl in the chest.

So much for protecting the kids.

AVERY WAS SOBBING AS SHE FOLLOWED Rick through a large field, Carl laying unconscious in his arms. Sal was holding up Milo, who had been shot in the arm, he was much luckier than the young boy he no doubt saved by slowing the bullet but, he was still losing blood, and losing it fast. At one point, the tears in her eyes started to blur the girls vision, making her slow down.

She felt a set of arms pick her up, her head hitting the mans chin over and over as he ran with her in his arms. She looked behind Shane's shoulder to where Otis, the man who had shot her uncle and friend was trailing behind them, not equipped to keep up with the younger, and more experienced group.

"H-hurry up!" She demanded, screaming as she pointed at the man she now seen as a villain, his breath heaving at the amount of running he was doing.

"The kid is right, shithead. Get us there, come on! How far! How far?" Shane yelled at the top of his lungs, kicking the man forward.

"He said how far!" Rick demanded, losing his grasp on his child.

"Another half mile that way. Hershel, talk to Hershel, he'll help those boys." Avery watched as Rick and her father sped ahead with Milo and Carl, smacking Shane's arm.

"I'm okay now, let me down. You can drag him." Her words were laced with venom as the man put her down, the young blonde wiping all tears from her eyes as she ran forward, completely leaving Otis and Shane behind.

She managed to catch up with Milo and her father, Rick getting ahead of them all. Before long, they were able to catch a glimpse of a farm house, the girl hoping they'd help. She had seen her fair share of cruelty in her short life and just wanted something positive to happen.

Then again, she couldn't expect much while living during the end of the world.

"They need to take care of Carl." Milo breathed out, holding onto his arm. "Just, just stay back a minute."

"Are you fucking kidding me? You got shot for a kid you barely know, Estella is going to kill me if you die because you wanted him to get more time with a doctor than you!" Sal was in utter disbelief, his ex brother in laws words making him do a double take.

"Since when do you listen to my sister?" A sweaty and bleeding young Romano questioned. "You two are divorced for a reason."

"He's right, daddy. Carl is little like me... and Mimi is little too but he's a Romano. He can handle it." Avery was trying to wear an optimistic smile. She had to these days, knowing that she was the reason her family fought to stay alive in the first place.

It was a burden she was forced to carry, make everyone happy.

"Well, we've wasted just about enough time arguing about it." Sal pushed forward, his daughter trailing behind. Otis and Shane weren't anywhere near them, and if they had waited for the man who shot recklessly into the air, someone probably would have bled out.

By the time they reached the house, only one girl was outside, her blonde hair flowing in the wind as she uncomfortably folded her hands across her chest.

"That man told me you needed more help, what happened out there?" She questioned as Sal walked up the steps, setting Milo down in a chair on the porch.

"He slowed down the bullet for the kid but it went straight through his arm, the bleeding is pretty bad." The Richards man swiped his blood soaked hand over his forehead to get rid of the sweat. "Please tell me you can help him."

"I'll go get some help, we'll do everything we can but my daddy is more focused on helping the boy." The blonde went inside, leaving the three family members alone again.

Estella was for sure going to kill Sal when she found out.

STELLA HAD THE WORST GUT FEELING she had gotten since this whole zombie thing started going down. The group that was walking back to the RV heard a gunshot, and her and Lori both knew that none of the men would choose to be so reckless to waste a bullet on a walker. That, and the fact that she could practically feel her daughter in distress, put her into an uneasy mood.

"If they were alright, they would have caught up to us by now." The Romano women spoke, running her hand through her hair.

"There's nothing we can do about it anyway. Can't run around these woods chasing echoes." Daryl commented, his crossbow firmly in hand.

"So what do we do?" Lori asked, just as worried as the woman standing next to her.

"Same as we've been. Beat the bush for Sophia, work our way back to the highway." The Dixon man shrugged his shoulders, able to be more realistic since he had little to no connection to the people separated from the group.

"He has a point." Aurora let out a light sigh, flipping her hair from one side to the other. "We have no idea where they could be, and if we run around, we risk the chance of losing everyone."

"I'm sure they'll hook up with us back at the R. V." Andrea nodded her head over to Estella who nervously bit at her fingernails, wanting to protest although she knew everyone was right.

She nodded slightly, the group continuing on in the direction they were heading.

"If we don't see them by sundown, i'll go out and look for them myself, okay?" Luca placed a hand on his sisters shoulder, squeezing it for comfort.

It had always been the two of them, caring for everyone else and somewhere along the way, he left that duty solely upon her. He felt bad for it but, he knew that he himself had to find a life outside of family. He laughed at the fact that after finding his calling, he just ended up right back with them.

"Thank you." Estella spoke softly, walking along behind the rest of the group.

She just had a bad feeling, and she was always right.

MILO SMILED AWKWARDLY AS THE BLONDE he now knew as Beth followed the directions her father had given her to tend to his arm. They hadn't really talked much since she had entered the room, and every few minutes her boyfriend would pop his head in the room to "check" on them. The last thing on Milo's mind was hitting on a girl, yet somehow everyone thought it was the first thing.

He wanted a little more credit than that.

"You know, you're real strong for getting through this like that. Most people would be crying right now." The Greene girl finally spoke, making the boy laugh.

"Believe me, I think it's just the adrenaline of actually being shot that's keeping me going. Once that's gone and nobody's in here i'll be crying like a baby." Milo joked, wincing and closing his eyes as the girl applied pressure to his wound.

"I'll make sure to keep everyone out then." Beth commented with a smile, firmly wrapping a clean bandage around the boys arm. "We don't have any medication for the pain, so you might have to fight through it for a little while longer."

"I'll live." The Romano boy kept his eyes closed, the numbness of his arm getting replaced by a sharp pain. "We all get hurt sometimes, right?"

"Hurt, maybe but, not shot, no." The blonde shook her head as she handed the boy a glass of water. "You should keep your arm elevated, and i'm going to make sure you stay hydrated and fed."

"Fed?" Milo's eyes opened wide, the boy doing a double take. He hadn't had a decent meal in what felt like months, and the thought of a warm plate made him almost forget about the amount of pain he was in during that moment. "I think I might love you—..r house. It's very nice, and.. farmly."

The Romano's all had special abilities, and Milo's was making just about any situation he was in awkward.

"Thank you, i'll make sure to let everyone know you think that." Beth grinned as she stood up, taking a rag from the bedside table as she wiped her hands with it. "I'll get to making your meal now."

"You—... yeah, okay. Thank you. Have.. fun?" Maybe everyone was right about him, seeing the first girl around his age he had seen in a long time made the boy nervous, and he wasn't sure why.

The Greene girl left the room after a few moments, leaving the boy to smack himself on the forehead, wincing at the way he positioned his arm.

He was an absolute mess.
