Chapter 14

Wooyoung stirred awake at the feeling of movement in the bed, latching on to the body beside him.

"Sorry, I didn't mean to wake you up. I have to get up but you can go back to sleep," San whispered and Wooyoung felt him place a soft kiss to his forehead.

"No, stay," Wooyoung whined, nuzzling closer. San chuckled lightly and ran his fingers through Wooyoung's hair, lightly scratching his scalp. Wooyoung melted at the action, letting out a happy hum.

"As much as I would love to stay here with you and I really would, I can't. I've got a very important fight today and I need to make sure I'm prepared for it in every way possible," San said softly. Wooyoung stiffened at his words and San sighed, cutting in before the other could even open his mouth.

"We've had this conversation numerous times in the past two weeks Woo and my answer still isn't changing," San said. Wooyoung's eyes finally slipped open and he frowned as he saw San watching him with gentle eyes. He huffed and removed himself from San's side, instead rolling to face the other way and curling up.

"Hey, don't be like that Youngie," San said as he shuffled to press up against Wooyoung's back, slipping an arm around his waist. Wooyoung quickly grabbed San's arm and shoved it away, making the fighter sigh fondly.

"Are you getting grumpy with me," he asked softly.

"You said to go back to sleep so I'm going back to sleep," Wooyoung muttered.

"Sounds like you're grumpy with me," San murmured, placing a light kiss to the back of Wooyoung's neck. Wooyoung shivered but didn't turn around.

"Can you stop being mad at me," San asked with a giggle. Wooyoung remained quiet but he let out a sniffle as his eyes welled up with tears. San froze at the sound before sitting up quickly and turning Wooyoung onto his back so he could see him. The younger didn't put up a fight and San's heart broke at the tears sliding down his beautiful face.

"Oh Woo, baby," San whispered. Wooyoung let out a small sob and shook his head. San quickly scooped him up into his lap and held him tightly.

"Shh, don't cry. It's ok," he said softly. Wooyoung wrapped his arms around his neck and clung to him as he continued to cry, his tears wetting San's skin. San just continued to hold him, rubbing his back softly. It took a few minutes for Wooyoung's cries to quieten down before he let out a few last sniffles.

"Feel any better," San asked gently.

"No," Wooyoung replied miserably. San frowned and leaned back slightly to look at the younger, wiping his eyes gently to get rid of the tears.

"Talk to me. What's going on," San asked.

"You already know what's going on San," Wooyoung said with a frown.

"I'm gonna need more than that Woo. Being mad at me for not agreeing with you shouldn't make you cry," San said.

"I'm not mad at you, I never said I was. I'm scared for you," Wooyoung said. The fight had been eating away at him for weeks and he tried every way he could to stop San from going through with it. He felt guilty because it was all his fault. San was either going to become a murderer or die.

"You've got nothing to be scared for," San said.

"Don't I? You could die San. And if you don't die then you will have killed someone. What is there not to be scared for," Wooyoung said angrily.

"This isn't something I want you worrying about Woo, it's got nothing to do with you," San said.

"It's got nothing to do with me? San it's got everything to do with me. It is literally because of me that you challenged him to this fight," Wooyoung exclaimed as he slid off San's lap to sit beside him.

"I don't want you worrying about this Wooyoung. Someone was bound to put Zeus in his place, he just got dealt a bad card with who," San said.

"San I love you, so much. I care about you, so much. How am I supposed to not worry? I found out 3 days ago that you love me too, 3 days ago. We've had no time together, we haven't had a chance to do anything. I have faith in you but what if, what if something goes wrong," Wooyoung said, his voice going quiet at the end. San paused at that, contemplating how to reply.

"I know it's not fair to tell you not to worry but I promise everything is going to be ok," San said.

"That's not something you can promise me San," Wooyoung said with a sigh.

"I know I shouldn't but I'm going to. I promise you that no matter what, I will make sure that you're going to be ok," San said firmly.

"But what about you," Wooyoung asked. San sighed and slipped his hand into Wooyoung's, squeezing it softly.

"We're going to be ok," he whispered. Wooyoung wasn't convinced but he didn't refute.

"Come and get me before you go to the ring. If you don't then I'm walking by myself," Wooyoung said.

"I know. I'll make sure I come and get you," San promised.

"Good. You can go now," Wooyoung said with a sigh. San frowned, feeling uneasy leaving Wooyoung alone when he was so clearly still upset. He got off the bed and grabbed his shirt, slipping it on quickly before turning back to the boy laying on the bed.

"Come here," he said, holding out his arms. Wooyoung shuffled to the edge of the bed and San picked him up swiftly, slipping an arm under his thighs and the other across his back. Wooyoung's arms wrapped around his waist. San carried him out of his room, across the hall and into Yeosang's room. Wooyoung smiled softly to himself, understanding what San was doing. San gently placed Wooyoung down on the bed beside Yeosang, lifting the covers so he could slip underneath. Wooyoung curled up to Yeosang's back and San tucked the blanket over his body.

"Get some more sleep and remember that I love you," San whispered. Wooyoung glanced at him sleepily, nodding lightly.

"Love you too," Wooyoung replied quietly. San have him one last smile before leaving the room. Wooyoung let out a breath as soon as the door closed and curled close to Yeosang. Yeosang stirred slightly but just grabbed Wooyoung's hand that was resting on his stomach. Wooyoung let his eyes slip closed and tried to push his worries away to focus on getting some more sleep.

~~~~~
"Stop pacing, San won't be here for another hour," Yeosang said as he glanced up from his laptop to see Wooyoung walking up and down near the foot of the bed.
"I'm worried," Wooyoung said.
"I couldn't tell. There's no need to be this worried right now though," Yeosang said.
"You can't tell me what I should or should not be worried about Yeosang. You have no idea how I'm feeling right now," Wooyoung snapped. Yeosang frowned and closed his laptop, moving it to his bedside table.
"Come here," he said softly, beckoning Wooyoung over. Wooyoung bit his bottom lip guiltily before walking over. Yeosang tugged him down so he was sitting on the edge beside him.
"Sweetheart I worry for you every day, more so nowadays with everything that's been going on. I know it may not be the exact same but I understand the worry," Yeosang said.
"Sangie, he could die," Wooyoung said.
"I know. But he could also die pretty much every day," Yeosang said.
"But this is my fault Yeosang, don't you understand," Wooyoung said. Yeosang sighed and slipped his hand into the youngers.
"It's not. You can't blame yourself for what happens in that ring tonight. San is a grown man, he can make his own decisions. You've tried every possible way you can to stop him from going through with it. He is the one who has decided he's doing it so it's not on you, it's his decision," Yeosang said. Wooyoung sighed unhappily.
"I just don't want him hurt," Wooyoung said quietly.
"I know. But right now nothing is wrong, he's not even at the ring yet," Yeosang said. Wooyoung drew in a deep breath and nodded. He crawled properly onto the bed, laying on top of Yeosang and hugging him. Yeosang chuckled but hugged him back.
"I'll be there with you the entire fight Woo. You can hold my hand if you want to," Yeosang said as he pat the youngers back.
"Thanks. I'm gonna need it," Wooyoung said with a sigh. Yeosang could tell Wooyoung needed the comfort now as well so he allowed the younger to cuddle with him for a few minutes before they were interrupted by a phone ringing. Wooyoung sighed and sat up, pulling out his phone before frowning when he saw the number.
"Hello," he said slowly as he answered, his hand scrunching into a fist.
"Sorry to bother you Wooyoung but Mr Jung left a heap of paperwork regarding one of the new projects and he wants you to sort it out ASAP," Mingi said. Wooyoung froze and his heart skipped a beat.
"I can't Mingi, not today," he said. Yeosang shot up quickly with wide eyes as he heard Wooyoung's words.
"I'm sorry Wooyoung, Mr Jung was very adamant that you get it sorted tonight," Mingi said. Wooyoung tried not to panic at the thought of missing San's fight. It's bad enough the other was going through it, the mere thought of not knowing what was happening had panic threatening to set in.
"Mingi. I-I can't. Not tonight, I can't tonight," Wooyoung said quickly.
"I'm so sorry bu-."
"What's going on," Yeosang cut in as he snatched the phone from Wooyoung's hands.
"Ah, Yeosang. Wooyoung needs to come into work today to sort out some paperwork that needs to be finished by tonight," Mingi explained. Yeosang frowned at that, glancing to Wooyoung who was nervously fiddling with his fingers in his lap. There is no way Wooyoung can miss this fight, the worry would eat him alive.
"Can you do it tomorrow," Yeosang asked, hearing Mingi sigh on the other end of the line.
"Mr Jung said tonight, sorry," Mingi said quietly.
"Wooyoung can't come in today. I've been home all day looking after him because he's sick and throwing up," Yeosang lied. Wooyoung glanced at him hopefully, slipping his hand into Yeosang's.
"Shit, that's not good. I definitely don't want him to get worse. I would try to get it done myself but I don't have the time, I have too much other stuff to do," Mingi said.
"He just said he wanted them sorted by tonight right? That was his only requirement," Yeosang asked.
"Uh, yeah. Why," Mingi questioned.
"I'll come in and do it. I've helped out with stuff before and I do work like this all the time for my dads company," Yeosang suggested.
"Yes, that would work. That would be great. How soon can you come in," Mingi asked quickly.
"Probably half an hour to 45 minutes," Yeosang replied.
"Great, great, I'll see you then. Tell Woo I hope he feels better soon," Mingi said before hanging up.
"It's ok, you're still going to the fight," Yeosang reassured Wooyoung who still seemed slightly panicked.
"But you aren't," Wooyoung whispered.
"That's ok, you'll be fine without me. I know I promised to hold your hand but you're going to be fine," Yeosang said. Wooyoung panicked and stood up quickly with side eyes.
"What if he dies? Oh my god Yeosang, what if he dies? What do I do? Where do I go? What if he dies and th-."
"Stop! Stop it right now. Panicking about what ifs is going to get you nowhere," Yeosang said firmly as he stood up as well.
"They are valid what ifs Sangie," Wooyoung said quickly.
"Look, I'll keep my phone on in case you desperately need me but you'll be fine. San will be there and he would do everything in his power to protect you and keep you safe! And if something happens to him then you've still got Hongjoong and I've heard that Bear is also keeping an eye on you," Yeosang said. Wooyoung still felt uneasy but he drew in deep breaths to calm himself down before stepping forwards and hugging Yeosang tightly.
"I can't wait for this all to be over," he whispered. Yeosang chuckled lightly and gave his back a gentle pat.
"Me too Woo, me too," he muttered.
"Thank you for agreeing to go in to do the paperwork for me," Wooyoung said quietly.
"Of course. I knew it would be hell for you to be stuck there while not knowing what was happening with San," Yeosang said.
"I appreciate it," Wooyoung mumbled as he squeezed Yeosang tightly.
"I know. Now let me go so I can get ready," Yeosang said. Wooyoung sighed but did as asked, leaving the room and closing the door behind himself.
~~~~~

Yeosang ended up leaving half an hour later after reassuring Wooyoung that his phone would remain on in case something went wrong. Wooyoung was then left alone in the apartment. He first went to his room and grabbed a change of clothes before going to his bathroom. He got undressed as he started the shower before stepping in, letting the hot water trail down his body as he let go of all his thoughts. He just relaxed as best as he could and washed his body before stepping back out and wrapping his towel around his waist. He stepped up in front of the mirror and paused, sighing heavily as he saw himself. He was well due for a haircut, or possibly just a dye. He hesitantly glanced down at his torso before shaking his head and looking away. He quickly got changed into his clothes, a hoodie and some semi decent slacks before leaving the bathroom. He was in his room for a few minutes before he heard knocking on the front door to the penthouse. He hurriedly rushed from the room, going to the front door. San was waiting there when he opened the door and he hugged him tightly.

"Hey Woo, everything ok," San asked as he hugged him back gently.

"It's all the same. I just wanted to hug you," Wooyoung mumbled. San chuckled lightly but hugged him tightly, rocking them side to side slightly.

"Are you ready to head out now," San asked gently.

"Yeah, I'll just need to put on my shoes," Wooyoung replied quietly. San nodded and waited as Wooyoung went and put on his shoes before returning. San frowned at how quiet Wooyoung was being so he gently placed two fingers under the youngers chin and tilted it up so they were looking at each other.

"You doing ok," he asked softly.

"Y-Yeah, I'm fine," Wooyoung stuttered in reply. He was fine, he just didn't want San to do this fight. San sighed and stepped forwards, resting his forehead against Wooyoung's.

"I'm sorry about causing you all of this stress but I need to do this," San whispered.

"I'm ok," Wooyoung replied. San sighed but let it go, stepping back and slipping his hand into Wooyoung's. Wooyoung held San's hand tightly and linked their fingers together. They left the building and started the walk to the ring together. With every step, Wooyoung's dread grew.

"You're awfully quiet," San spoke up softly.

"I'm just thinking," Wooyoung replied. San glanced down at the younger boy nervously. He yanked him closer, moving his hand up to wrap around his shoulder. Wooyoung stopped walking suddenly and turned to San, wrapping his arms around his waist, burying his head into his chest. San reacted quickly, hugging him back tightly. They were both quiet before Wooyoung's shoulders started shaking. He tried not to start crying but he couldn't help it. He was still quite worried and felt overwhelmed. San clenched his eyes closed and held Wooyoung tighter.

"Please don't cry. Please don't Wooyoung," he begged. Wooyoung let out a small sob.

"You're making me feel so guilty for doing this Woo. Please just, just try to hold it in. I can't do this when I feel like the worst person in the world because I keep making you cry," San said. Wooyoung sniffled and pulled back.

"But I don't want you to do it," he said with a sniffle.

"I know that but I need to do this fight, I need to Wooyoung. But in order to do that, I need to have you with me on this. Please Youngie," San begged. His voice was shaky and Wooyoung noticed that the fighters eyes were slightly watery.

"Do I really affect you that much," he asked quietly.

"Yes Wooyoung, you do. I just, I need to explain some things to you but I don't want to do that in the middle of the street. Let's go to my warmup room and talk properly," San said. Wooyoung nodded and wiped his eyes before grabbing San's hand once again. They remained hand in hand until they got to the alley by the ring when they finally let go. The guard let them in as soon as saw Lynx, stepping aside so they could walk inside. Wooyoung perked up as soon as he noticed his favourite bartender and walked over.

"Hey Hongjoong. Long time no see," he said as he sat down. Hongjoong glanced up and smiled happily before walking over.

"Hey Wooyoung, how's it going Lynx," he said, giving a nod in San's direction to which the fighter reciprocated.

"Not too bad all things considered. How've you been," Wooyoung asked.

"Pretty good. I'm glad you're here today," Hongjoong replied, his eyes darting briefly to San. San sighed before gently guiding Wooyoung away from the bar. Wooyoung quickly waved goodbye to Hongjoong before following San to the door at the back of the room. They went down the hall and slipped into San's warmup room.

"So uh, you still want to tell me something," Wooyoung asked. San nodded and grabbed Wooyoung's hand, tugging them over to the couch where they both sat down. San let out a deep breath and turned his body to face Wooyoung, slipping his other hand into Wooyoung's other as well.

"I haven't told you much of my childhood have I," he asked, Wooyoung shaking his head in reply.

"I know you started fighting professionally when you were 18 and you um, you once mentioned a foster home I think," Wooyoung said quietly.

"I'm not going to bore you with all of the details in my life but I do think explaining some of it to you will help you understand why you mean so much to me ok, why I have to do this," San said. Wooyoung could tell that San was nervous, could see how he was nibbling on his lower lip anxiously. He quickly squeezed his hand in reassurance.

"Nothing about you could bore me," he said softly, making San smile softly, a dimple popping out.

"I'm not lying so go ahead, tell me about young Sannie," Wooyoung said.

"Ok, well I'll start off by letting you know both of my parents died in a car crash when I was five." Wooyoung gasped at his words but San just gave him a soft smile.

"It's ok, I was only five so I don't even remember them at all. After they passed, I had no other family members so I was put into foster care. Over the next five years I was put into about eight different foster homes but none of them stuck for long and I can't really remember those homes anyway. When I was 10, I ended up in a group home. The couple that lived there fostered 7 or 8 kids into their house over the years that I was there. They always had at least five kids living with them at one time but it wasn't because they loved kids, it's because they loved the monthly payments they received for each kid," San said with a sigh.

"Oh, I'm sorry to hear that," Wooyoung said. His parents, while they stopped paying him much attention when he was 9, they still loved him in their own twisted way and made sure he was cared for.

"It's ok, it's not your fault. I actually met Hongjoong two years later when he was brought in as well. He was the only person I got close to, the one who looked after me. The rest of the kids weren't great people and could certainly not be trusted. Some nights I would sleep in Hongjoong's room and he would barricade it closed. Though I think that was more when My Kim got drunk," San explained.

"Wait, you'd hide when he was drunk? Was he abusive," Wooyoung asked worriedly.

"He wasn't the worst he could be but he would knock us around a bit. When he was drunk though, he would go crazy. He was the reason I decided to learn how to fight when I was 16," San replied.

"Shit. I'm so sorry that happened to you Sannie, you were just a kid," Wooyoung said sadly.

"It's fine. Hongjoong was kicked out when he turned 18 but he kept in contact with me to make sure I was still doing ok. He would have gotten me out but he would not have had enough money to look after him. When I turned 18, I was kicked out with nothing but the clothes on my back. I moved in with Hongjoong and he introduced me to the fighting scene so I could make some money while he bartended," San said.

"When did you move into your own place," Wooyoung asked.

"It took me about a year to start making enough money to be able to pay rent," San said. Wooyoung squeezed San's hands, rubbing the back of them with his thumbs.

"My whole life I've struggled with knowing who I can trust. Hongjoong, Seonghwa and Jongho are the only people I've truly gotten close to in my life. They're the only ones I trust and it took ages for those bonds to grow, months to years. I don't trust people easily. I have walls built up to protect myself and they're damn hard to break down," San said. Wooyoung's eyes widened in surprise.

"Those walls came crumbling down within weeks of meeting you Wooyoung. They were gone so quickly. I care so much about you, I love you and it's because of how much I care for you that I can't just let Zeus get away with what he did. I cannot let him go around the streets thinking he can hurt you," San said firmly, his eyes not blinking as he stared into Wooyoung's eyes to show his sincerity. Wooyoung moved forwards, climbing into San's lap before settling down and hugging him. San slipped his arms around his waist and held him close. Wooyoung nuzzled his face into his neck and placed a soft kiss to it.

"I don't want you to do this fight, we both know that. But if doing this will help you feel better, will help you be more at ease that I'm safer, then there's nothing I will do to stop you," Wooyoung said. San let out a breath and pressed his lips to Wooyoung's hair.

"Thank you. I know I said I was going to do it anyway but it was killing me to see you in so much pain over this," San said softly.

"Just promise me you won't die out there," Wooyoung whispered.

"I'm not going to. I promise you by the end of tonight everything is going to be ok," San promised firmly.
