Chapter 1
"I'm so bored."
"Hi so bored, I'm Yeosang," Yeosang grinned as his friend tilted his head up to give him the stink eye.
"I hate you," he pouted.
"No Wooyoung, you love me," Yeosang teased. Wooyoung rolled his eyes but didn't deny it, relaxing back down in his best friend's arms and turning his attention back to the TV. The two boys were curled up on Yeosang's bed, Wooyoung having barged in earlier and settling down with his back to Yeosang's chest.
"This show is so boring," he whined.
"Might I remind you that you came in here by yourself and you're free to leave whenever you want," Yeosang pointed out. Wooyoung scoffed in outrage and cuddled closer, making Yeosang roll his eyes but tighten his arm around the younger's waist.
"I don't wanna leave. You're too comfortable," Wooyoung said.
"Brat," Yeosang muttered fondly. Wooyoung grinned and shifted over slightly so his head was resting on Yeosang's chest, listening to the steady beating of his heart.
"What are you planning on doing tomorrow," Yeosang asked, absentmindedly moving his hand to brush through Wooyoung's lavender locks.
"Dad wants me to check in on one of the hotels. Apparently they've been getting complaints about the cleaning services not being done properly," Wooyoung said with a sigh. Yeosang hummed and massaged his head delicately.
"Do you want me to come with you," he asked softly.
"Nah, I don't want to bore you," Wooyoung replied quietly.
"Nonsense. Why don't we go at about 5:30 and then afterwards we can get some dinner," Yeosang said. Wooyoung hummed before nodding, letting his eyes slip closed.
"What, have you decided you're just going to sleep here," Yeosang asked with a chuckle.
"You're comfy," Wooyoung replied quietly. Yeosang sighed but didn't protest, allowing the younger to slowly drift off to sleep on his chest.
~~~~~
"Hurry up Wooyoung. This is your own agreement, not mine. How are you somehow always late to everything," Yeosang said with a sigh as he sat on the couch, watching Wooyoung rush to button up his shirt.
"Shut up and be helpful," Wooyoung said, hurrying over and leaning down. Yeosang chuckled but reached up and quickly tied the youngers tie for him.
"Are you ready now," he asked.
"Yeah, Anthony has the car out front," Wooyoung replied with a nod. The two boys left the apartment and took the elevator down to the ground floor.
"Good afternoon Mr Jung, Mr Kang."
"Good afternoon Natalia," Wooyoung replied cheerfully, both boys giving the receptionist a wave as they passed. Wooyoung took a step closer to Yeosang as they got outside, scanning for the large black car and finding it directly out front.
"Hey Anthony," Yeosang said as they got into the car.
"Where to Sirs," the driver asked them.
"Jung Hotel Enterprise on 4th street please," Wooyoung replied. The car started and they drove off.
"Did you decided where we're going for dinner," Wooyoung asked.
"I thought you were supposed to be deciding, Yeosang said with a frown.
"Sangie, you were supposed to already have booked somewhere nice. What if we can't get a reservation now," Wooyoung whined.
"Since when have we ever not been able to get a reservation? Just tell them your our names and them boom, open private booths," Yeosang said, rolling his eyes.
"That's just rude Sangie, trying to use the family name to get better things," Wooyoung said mockingly.
"Says the one who does it at least once a week," Yeosang replied, shaking his head.
"I'm feeling attacked right now Kang Yeosang," Wooyoung said with a pout.
"Good, you should be," Yeosang said with a shrug. Wooyoung frowned in annoyance but remained quiet, turning to look out the window. Yeosang smiled to himself at the youngers childishness. The drive took about 20 minutes before they were pulling up out front of the hotel.
"Thank you Anthony," Wooyoung said as they stepped out. Yeosang closed the door and moved closer to Wooyoung, gently grabbing his blazer and fixing it up.
"Thanks," Wooyoung said with a soft smiled, patting Yeosang's back in appreciation. They walked up the marble steps and pushed open the clean glass doors before entering the building. Wooyoung glanced around, waiting for a staff member to come greet them but no one came.
"Strike one already I guess," Yeosang said with a raised eyebrow. Yeosang knows just how much the Jung's pride themselves on their customer service. Wooyoung frowned but continued walking over to the reception desk. He cleared his throat, making the girl's head snap up before her eyes widened as she seemed to realise who was standing in front of her.
"Mr J-Jung," she said, hurriedly bowing her head.
"Hi, I was wondering if I could talk to the manager who is on at the moment," Wooyoung asked. The girl paled in fear before nodding quickly and grabbing the phone, dialling a number.
"Hi Sir, this is Dianne from reception. Jung Wooyoung and Kang Yeosang are here and wish to speak with you," she said.
"Ok, thank you," she said after listening to what was said back. She then placed the phone back down and looked up at the two boys.
"Mr Hwang will be right down," she said. Wooyoung and Yeosang nodded before Wooyoung glanced around the room. At first glance it looked ok but if you look closer, you can see the things out of place. Cushions on the couch were in disarray, bins almost full, a little bit of dirt on the floor. This may not seem like much but Wooyoung's parents have very high standards for all of their hotels, it's why they became so successful in the first place. He frowned in annoyance, not liking that his parents name could be tarnished all because some people are lazy.
"Ah, Mr Jung, Mr Kang, to what do I owe the pleasure," a man asked as he walked out from the elevator. Wooyoung assumed this must be the manager.
"There have been some complaints coming through about the service and state of this hotel so my father asked if we could come and do an inspection," Wooyoung said. The managers face seemed to pale at that, his eyes shifting nervously. Yeosang frowned at that. A nervous man is a guilty man.
"We weren't informed of any inspections coming up," the manager said.
"Well that is the point. If we let you know were coming then you'd have time to fix things up," Wooyoung said with a sweet smile. He could see the anger flash through the managers eyes but he didn't care. If you aren't going to take your work seriously then you can deal with the consequences.
"Very well. If you'd like to follow me this way, I can give you a tour of some of the rooms," the manager said.
"That won't be necessary. Yeosang and I can have a look around ourselves," Wooyoung said. The manager frowned before seeming to catch himself and smiled.
"Of course. Let me know if I can be of any assistance," he said, bowing before walking off.
"Didn't sound at all dodgy," Yeosang said, making Wooyoung chuckle.
"The main complaints were about the pool and gym room so we'll check those first before they can do a rushed clean up," Wooyoung said. Yeosang nodded so the two of them set off down the halls towards the pool.
~~~~~
The two boys did a thorough inspection of the public areas around the hotel, finding that it was indeed unkept. Wooyoung was not impressed and was quick to give his dad a call, relaying what they had found.
"Dinner time," Yeosang said as the car stopped out the front of a high-end Italian restaurant.
"Did you even book," Wooyoung asked.
"Nope but we'll be fine," Yeosang said with a shrug. Wooyoung rolled his eyes but chuckled as they got out of the car, Yeosang waited until Wooyoung was beside him before they linked arms and continued into the restaurant. There were some people waiting around and Wooyoung felt bad knowing they would get seated straight away. Yeosang however didn't falter, tugging Wooyoung forwards to the front host.
"Hello, welcome to Giovanni's, do you have a booking," the lady asked.
"No sorry, we didn't get a chance to book but it's Kang Yeosang and Jung Wooyoung," Yeosang replied. The girls eyes widened and she nodded quickly.
"Of course. Mr Kang, Mr Jung, right this way," she said as she grabbed two menus and walked out. The two boys followed her to a private room where they both sat down.
"Here are your menus. Please take your time and whenever you're ready to order, just click this green button and a server will come and attend to you," the girl said.
"Thank you," Wooyoung said, giving her a nod before she left.
"Fettucine carbonara," Yeosang asked. Wooyoung grinned and nodded, happy his friend knew him so well. Yeosang pressed the button and less than a minute later a waiter appeared.
"Good afternoon sirs, what can I get for you," he asked.
"We'll get a main fettucine carbonara and a main lasagne," Yeosang said, pausing for the waiter to jot it down.
"And could we start off with an entrée of garlic pizza and calamari," he added.
"And can I get you two anything to drink," the waiter asked.
"I'm fine with a water at the moment," Wooyoung said, Yeosang giving a nod in reply as well. The waiter wrote everything down before walking off.
"What do you want to do after dinner," Wooyoung asked.
"You don't want to head home," Yeosang asked him.
"Not particularly. The night is still young and I want to have some fun," Wooyoung said with a grin.
"Do you want to go to a night club," Yeosang asked.
"Nah, it's getting a bit boring constantly going to night clubs. I want something new, something fun," Wooyoung said with a sigh. Yeosang regarded his best friend thoughtfully before deciding to divulge some information.
"There is a place I know that's new for you and I find quite fun," he said slowly. Wooyoung's eyes lit up and he sat up straighter.
"And what might this new adventure be," he asked.
"Illegal, definitely illegal," Yeosang said.
"I mean it's not like we haven't done illegal stuff before," Wooyoung said with a shrug.
"Fair enough. There's this underground fighting ring downtown. I've gone there a bit over the past few months and they usually have some pretty good fights. Intense and really fun to watch," Yeosang explained. Wooyoung was surprised at the olders words. He knows Yeosang likes to have fun and try new things but he wouldn't have expected him to be into watching fighting. Not to mention he's been watching for a few months and never mentioned it.
"Sangie you bad boy. I can't believe you would hide this from me," he said with a pout.
"I didn't exactly hide it from you, I just didn't bring it up because you never asked," Yeosang said with a shrug.
"Rude," Wooyoung said, making Yeosang chuckle.
"Don't pout, we'll go later," Yeosang said. Wooyoung grinned in excitement and nodded. Sure, it may be illegal but watching people fight seems fun.
~~~~~
They finished dinner about an hour later and Yeosang paid before Wooyoung could protest. The two of them left the building and went outside.
"It's probably best we walk there anyway given it's illegal," Yeosang said, making Wooyoung chuckle.
"Show the way Mr Criminal," he said with a grin, making Yeosang roll his eyes.
"Unbutton your blazer and untuck your shirt. You don't want to look to fancy or else people will mistake you for an investor," Yeosang said as they started walking down the street. Wooyoung was confused but did as asked.
"What's an investor," Wooyoung asked.
"Rich people who basically fund the ring," Yeosang replied.
"Ok, but like you do realise we're rich too right," Wooyoung pointed out.
"Investors are assholes in my opinion. More often than not, they're old men and from what I heard, they use their money to get extra rewards," Yeosang explained. Wooyoung furrowed his eyebrows in confusion before a few seconds later his eyes widened in realisation.
"What, like they pay to get the fighters into bed or something," he asked.
"Yeah. I don't know about you but I'm not too keen on being associated with anything like that," Yeosang said.
"Yeah, I'm really not interested in a possible scandal like that. Illegal fighting I can deal with, possible prostitution not so much," Wooyoung said. Yeosang directed the two of them down a few streets before turning into an alley.
"Should have expected a dodgy entrance," Wooyoung said with a chuckle. Despite the humour in his voice, he instinctively stepped closer to Yeosang, his hand slipping into the older boys. Yeosang stopped instantly, squeezing Wooyoung's hand and turning him to face him.
"I know I suggested this but if it's unsettling you or scaring you in any way then we can go. I don't ever want to do something you aren't comfortable with," Yeosang said seriously.
"Sangie I'm fine, I promise. I'm not too fond of creepy dark alleys," Wooyoung assured him.
"You positive," Yeosang asked, receiving a nod from Wooyoung.
"Ok, good. Come on," Yeosang said, tugging him forwards. When they got to the end of the alley, they turned left and were met by a large men outside a door. Yeosang let go of Wooyoung's hand and bowed down.
"Password," the man asked.
"Wonderland," Yeosang replied. The man nodded before stepping aside.
"Welcome to the Wonderland," he said. Yeosang nodded before he tugged Wooyoung into the building. Wooyoung was surprised to see the inside, given the outside was so run down and old. The room they walked into was large and nice. There were tables and seats, as well as a bar.
"This is the open room. Some people just like to get drunk out here rather than to go out and watch the fights. They get shown on the TV but it isn't the same as seeing it in person," Yeosang said.
"As much as I would love to get drunk, perhaps another time. Right now I would rather see the action," Wooyoung said with a grin. Yeosang chuckled at his enthusiasm but nodded.
"Do you want to get a drink first," Yeosang asked. Wooyoung thought about it for a few seconds before nodding.
"One drink would be nice he said. Yeosang nodded and the two of them went over to the bar, Yeosang flagging down the bartender.
"Long time no see Mr Kang," he said, nodding gently.
"Come on Hongjoong, I thought we were past formalities," Yeosang said. The blue haired male grinned at him before glancing at Wooyoung, eying him up and down.
"And who is this cutie," he asked with a grin.
"This is Wooyoung, my best friend. Woo, this is Hongjoong, one of the resident bartenders," Yeosang explained.
"It's a pleasure to meet you," Wooyoung said.
"Same to you. So what can I get for you two," Yeosang asked.
"I'll have a tequila sunrise," Wooyoung said.
"Ok. And Yeosang, your usual," Hongjoong said. Yeosang nodded so Hongjoong walked off to go make their drinks.
"He seems nice," Wooyoung said.
"Yeah, he's not too bad," Yeosang said with a nod. Hongjoong returned a few minutes later with their drinks, placing it on the bench in front of them.
"So, who's scheduled for tonight," Yeosang asked.
"Two main fights happening. The Ripper vs Lynx and Strife vs Bear," Hongjoong said. Yeosang perked up at that, turning to Wooyoung.
"Those will be good fights, we picked a good night," he said.
"He's right. The Ripper is an absolute animal who never plays by the rules but the Lynx is good, hasn't lost a fight in a year. The other two will also be a good matchup as they have similar fighting styles," Hongjoong explained.
"First fight starts in 15 minutes so I'd get going out there to get some good seats," Hongjoong said. Yeosang nodded and smiled in thanks, guiding Wooyoung up and to the back of the room. There was a door there that they both went through, leading to an empty hall. When they got to the end of the hall there was another door. This time when the door opened the silence was broken by loud cheering and yelling.
"Welcome to the arena Youngie," Yeosang said. Wooyoung's eyes widened as he took in the room. It was quite large, stands surrounding a round ring in the centre of the room. The ring was caged off by chains that went all the way up to the ceiling.
"Let's go sit down," Yeosang said. Wooyoung nodded so the two of them went up into the stand and sat down in some empty seats.
"I'm so excited. I've never seen a real fight," Wooyoung said.
"I mean it
S fun to watch but I wouldn't say it's as exciting as you seem to think it is," Yeosang said with a chuckle.
"Shh, don't ruin my fun," Wooyoung said with a pout.
"Attention ladies and gentleman, the fight featuring Lynx and the Ripper will be commencing in 10 minutes. Bidding and bets will be closed in 5 minutes so make sure you get in quick," a voice announced through the arena.
"Bidding," Wooyoung questioned.
"Investors. They bid for time with the fighters afterwards," Yeosang said. Wooyoung frowned at that, feeling a little unsettled.
"Are the fighters ok with that," he asked.
"From what I've heard from Hongjoong, a lot of them encourage it. The investors pay serious money and many use that to their advantage. Some however, are not big fans and refuse to have them," Yeosang replied.
"That's good. At least they can refuse," Wooyoung said with a nod.
5 minutes went by quickly and suddenly announcements were being made once again.
"Ladies and gentleman, introducing to you the well-known brute in the ring, the Ripper." Wooyoung watched as a large man walked out into the ring. He had on black clothes, a large beard and a mowhawk.
"Well, he looks friendly," Wooyoung said slowly, watching as the guy walked around the ring yelling and beating his chest.
"Yeah, not my personal favourite," Yeosang said with a nod.
"And now, introducing to you a fan favourite, Lynx." The Ripper had sat down and a new person entered the ring. Wooyoung froze in his seat, his eyes widening and his throat drying as his eyes landed on the new comer. The Lynx was not some jacked, middle-aged man like the Ripper that he was expecting. He was younger, a lot younger, closer to his own age. He wore black, tight fitting leather pants and a white tank top, white bandages around his fists. The Lynx didn't move around hyping himself up like the Ripper did. Instead he did a lap around the ring, just fixing his bandages.
"Damn Woo, I think you've got a little drool there," Yeosang joked, noticing the look in his best friends eyes. Wooyoung jumped and quickly looked over at Yeosang before frowning.
"I hate you. You know that right," he said.
"Uh huh. Was I wrong though," Yeosang asked.
"I just, he looks cool. Is he good," Wooyoung asked.
"Very good. I've watched a few of his fights and he's taken down some pretty big guys," Yeosang said with a nod. Wooyoung glanced back at the ring, watching the two prepare for the fight.
"This is going to be so fun to watch," Wooyoung said, clapping happily.
"At least act like you're old enough to be here," Yeosang said, rolling his eyes fondly.
"Hey, stop being an awful best friend," Wooyoung said, whacking Yeosang's shoulder. There was a sudden bell ringing and Wooyoung turned to see the Ripper lunge forwards and swing his fist at the Lynx who managed to dodge it quickly. His speed surprised Wooyoung who watched with rapt attention. The Lynx countered the swing with one of his own that landed in the Rippers ribs however the man barely flinched. He lunged once again but the Lynx dodged, backing away. The Ripper didn't give him much breathing room, following after him. Lynx was doing well at dodging blows, occasionally landing his own. That was until he wasn't quick enough and the Ripper landed a right hook to his face.
"Shit, that must've hurt," Wooyoung winced, watching the Lynx stumble back with blood dripping from the corner of his mouth.
"Yeah, but he can take a hit," Yeosang replied.
The fight continued on, both getting good hits on each other until they were bruised and bloody. The entire arena let out a gasp as the Ripper suddenly scrunched up his hand from where he had fallen and jumped up, flinging the sand into the Lynx's face. The other fighter flinched back, covering his eyes with his hands. That gave the Ripper the opportunity to land a good hit, making the Lynx fall to the ground.
"Isn't that cheating? That's dirty, that has to be against the rules," Wooyoung said in outrage.
"Like I said, he's a cheat," Yeosang replied.
"Then shouldn't he be disqualified," Wooyoung said with a frown.
"This is underground fighting Woo, they don't exactly have enforcers," Yeosang said. Wooyoung wasn't happy but he continued watching. The Ripper had the Lynx pinned down and was punching him repeatedly. Wooyoung winced at every blow, understanding this fight was over. There was no way the Lynx could turn this around. Except he did. The Lynx suddenly caught the next punch and kicked the Ripper in the ribs, getting him off him. The Lynx then sprung up to his feet, blood dripping from his face. The Ripper was attempting to get up but he wasn't quick enough. It was like watching in slow motion as Lynx ran forwards and jumped, spinning backwards with his leg raised. It collided with the Rippers face, sending him sprawling to the ground where he laid unmoving. Bells suddenly chimed and people were cheering.
"Holy shit. That was awesome," Wooyoung gasped, clapping in shock.
"I told you he was good," Yeosang said with a grin. Wooyoung looked back at the ring to see the Lynx bowing to the crowd as a man with a microphone stepped into the ring.
"Our winner everyone, Lynx," he announced as he grabbed Lynx's wrist and raised his hand up followed by loud cheers.
"Congratulations Lynx, a performance well done," the announcer said. The Lynx bowed one last time before exiting the stage and disappearing. The Ripper was then dragged off stage as well.
"Thank you ladies and gentleman. Bids for the Bear vs Strife are now open and will close in half an hour." Wooyoung glanced over at where Lynx disappeared and he felt curiousity fill him. "Hey Sang, where's the nearest bathroom," he asked.
"I'll show you," Yeosang said, going to get up but Wooyoung stopped him.
"Out that door and to the left. You'll see the label on the wall," Yeosang said. Wooyoung nodded and left quickly. He turned left like Yeosang said but kept going past the bathrooms, looking for any sign of where the Lynx may have gone. He knew it probably wasn't the best idea but he was mesmerised by his performance and wanted to see the man closer, to congratulate him.
He ended up in a dead end and was going to turn back around but he noticed a door slightly open. He moved over and knocked gently but got no answer. He was nervous but gently pushed it open, glancing inside. It seemed empty at first but then he noticed what seemed to be feet on the ground poking out from behind a bench. He gasped and rushed into the room, hurrying over to the person on the floor in worry.
When he rounded the corner, he realised too late that it wasn't a person who had collapsed as he originally thought but it was the Lynx. He had on a black hoodie, his hands unwrapped but bruised and headphones in his ears. He seemed to be meditating peacefully but that changed when he seemed to realise there was someone else in the room with him. His eyes snapped open and he jumped up quickly, ripping out his headphones.
"Who the fuck are you," he snapped, his gaze narrowing on Wooyoung. Yeah, not the greatest idea of Wooyoung's.
"Uh, sorry. The door wasn't closed properly and I thought you were hurt," Wooyoung rushed out quickly.
"I can protect myself and even if I couldn't, I highly doubt you could protect me," Lynx said.
"I um, I wanted to congratulate you on your win, it was awesome," Wooyoung said nervously. The Lynx was quiet, his eyes sweeping up and down Wooyoung's form before he frowned.
"Look, I'm not interested, no matter how much money you offer me," he said.
"Wait, wh-oh." Wooyoung felt embarrassed when he realised what he meant.
"No, th-that's no-."
"Sorry I took so long. I had to-." Wooyoung turned as Hongjoong stopped talking. Wooyoung was confused but before he saw the first aid kit in the bartenders hands.
"Oh, Wooyoung," Hongjoong said, glancing behind him to look at Lynx.
"Ah, sorry. I didn't realise you clean up the fighters," Wooyoung said.
"That's cos I don't. Lynx here is like a brother to me though, so I do what I can to patch him up," Hongjoong said.
"Hongjoong, that's enouh," Lynx snapped. Wooyoung turned around again, finding Lynx glaring at him.
"You can leave now, you're not welcome," he said. Wooyoung thought it was best to leave rather than to try to explain himself.
"Right, sorry. Once again, well done. It was an impressive fight," he said, bowing down before leaving quickly. He hurried down the halls and back to Yeosang who was sitting in his seat still, reading through his phone.
"You find it ok? You took a while, I was worried you got lost," Yeosang said.
"Almost did but I got there," Wooyoung lied and Yeosang hummed.
"Next fight is in 20, are you enjoying it so far," Yeosang asked.
"Definitely. The fighters were good, they intrigue me," Wooyoung replied. One of them in particular. His thoughts drifted back to the Lynx, with the dark hair and dark eyes and he had a feeling he would be seeing him more in the coming months. He hoped.
