Does it bother you I am?
I grab a small jug of whiskey hoping it will ease the conversation along. I find where Claire is at, she is sitting on a large cluster of stones, the woods and brush surrounding her offering us some privacy. Her dress slowly sways in the soft wind, her hair falls in front of her face as she studies the paper held white-knuckled in her hands. I pour two cups and take a seat aside her. "Dougal wished us to be married." I nod my head as I hand her a cup. "And your willing?" She studies my face hoping to find some hope in this sudden change of events. "Aye, you have mended my wound more than once. Besides, what kind of friend would I be if I left at the hands of that mad bastard Randall." I clink my cup against her own and down some of its contents. With a shaky grip Claire drinks all of hers.
While trying to get a grasp on reality Claire asks me quite a silly question, "Well surely a young man like yourself doesn't want to be stuck with someone my age, is there no one your attracted to or rather be with?" Does she really think I am even fit to be a husband, no man would let his daughter be with me, "Do you mean is there anyone I'm promised to, hah no, I am a poor prospect of a husband, I have only a soldiers pay to live on and there is the small difficulty of a price on my head. No father wants his daughter married to a man who could be arrested and hanged at any time. Did you not think of that."
Claire looks away from me before her words turn bitter and cold, "So that's that then, as far as your concerned we will can just start the honeymoon tomorrow." I nod knowing this is hard on her, I get up to give her some time and space to process it, "Aye, whatever suits you." She stops me in my tracks, "Well doesn't it bother you that I'm not a virgin." This doesn't bother me one bit but what I have to confess turns my cheeks red as I think of what I have to look forward to, "No... as long as it... doesn't bother you that... I am." She looks me up and down realizing what my words mean. "I keen one of us should know what they are doing." I grin as my orneriness escapes me. She looks at me in disbelief then back to the ground. I walk back to the group of men with a wicked smile covering my face.
