9: first day

Lance thought he might throw up in the parking lot. His nerves were getting the best of him and he was jittery with all his pent up nervous excitement. He was so scared he was practically sweating through his shirt. Today was the first day of his rotations and he never felt better or worse than he did now.

All of his years of med and premed escaped him as soon as he stepped through the sliding doors. Lance quickly sanitized his hands in quick practiced movements. It felt he was training for this moment his entire life. He spent countless nights up late to make sure he got all his work done; he barely had a high school experience. He dedicated the last three years to getting an associates degree.

As a tenth grader, he begged his guidance counselor to allow to participate in a dual enrollment program. After countless sit-ins and a threat of a protest, Lance was finally put into a few college classes. He walked to the college campus after his second period, worked throughout his entire high school career, and barely had any form of social life. It was all for this, to become a doctor. Lance thought it was pretty worth it.

He straightened his tie one last time before finally entering the building. Everything passed in a strange sort of blur. He was rushed and pushed around and given too many things all at once but putting on the white coat made everything seem worth it. The white coat felt almost too big on him even though he knew it wasn't. It was his exact size. It fit him almost perfectly. It was like he was meant to be a doctor.

His group's first rotation was neurology. Shiro's words were the only thing that came to mind for the next thirty minutes or so as he toured the floor and was introduced to all the doctors.

He stood with a group from his class and another small group from the other school. Lance didn't have that many friends so he stood sort of by himself. "Hello and welcome to your first rotation. I'm sure you're all excited to start working believe me I know but we'll have to give you a general tour of the hospital and get pictures done for identification purposes. Any questions at this time?" The monotone voice spoke to the group of eager students. The attending had to be Dr. Kaltenecker. Lance already wasn't looking forward to the next few upcoming weeks. No one dared to raise their hands. Nervousness practically radiated off the group.

"Great." The older man stood from the rolling chair. "Follow me." The group fell into line right behind him too scared to be left behind or walk beside him. It was a sort of dilemma that probably wasn't going to be fixed ever. He himself stood near the middle of the group. Lance glanced around the hallway, his eyes never staying too long on any particular thing.

The halls were a lot bigger than he remembered. Maybe it was a mental thing but they seemed never ending now. "Some of you will be placed under me and the rest under the various other doctors on this floor. No special treatment sadly. We put your names in a hat and pick who will be under us." No one laughed. Lance wasn't sure the last time Kaltenecker blinked.

"Rotations are a big deal," the doctor began. "They are essentially the first step you take outside of the classroom as almost real physicians." Lance looked down and counted the square patterns on the tiles as they walked. He was excited and nauseous. He knew he should have eaten a bigger breakfast.

"I heard we're going to be helping in the care of patients." A nervous voice broke the quiet of the group. The doctor to be was right next to him, her blonde hair was long and kept in two neat pigtails with an almost braid crown. His time with his sister Veronica really gave him experience in the beauty area.

"Ah, what a brave soul. Hopefully, I pick your name out of that hat." Lance wasn't sure if he was joking or not. The girl winced. "Yes. You have morning rounds followed by an afternoon conference and then afternoon rounds. I expect you to do everything an intern does if I'm being perfectly honest." Lance shoved his hands in his pocket. The girl bit her lip but continued to walk.

"Here's the supply closet. This isn't Grey's Anatomy please do not hook up in the closets. I hate that I have to say it but I do." The doctor droned on. "The hospital will provide scrubs when you guys are on your surgery rotation but on this rotation I expect ceil blue on Wednesday and Thursday."

Before he knew it he was sitting in the lunchroom for the first time. He stared down at his tray and a smile crept on his face. This was his first doctor lunch. Someone cleared their throat. He looked up because he realized he must have looked crazy. "Oh hi. Sorry." He said sheepishly. It was the blonde girl from before. There were no empty tables and he was the only one sitting alone. For some reason he was embarrassed.

"I don't want to bother you...I just...I don't have anyone else to sit with and I'm...I'm sort of wondering if I can sit with you?" She gripped her lunch tray tighter. Her newly printed name tag gleamed Romelle.

"Oh yeah! Of course! Just sit down." Lance motioned at the empty seats and she took the one across from him. "I'm Lance McClain." He stuck his hand out and she shook it politely.

"Romelle Pollux." The blonde smiled. "Thank you for this." She began but Lance waved it away.

"I should be thanking you for sitting with me." He grinned at her and began eating his apple. "Are you interested in neurology?" He asked trying to make conversation.

"God no." Romelle laughed. "Obstetrics and Gynecology. How about you?" She ate a bite full of salad and sighed. "I don't care what people say I happen to like hospital food." She joked and Lance laughed.

"I feel the same way." Lance laughed. "Emergency medicine then a fellowship later in pediatrics." He tapped his free hand on the table.

"So specialized already." She teased. "It's alright though I've known exactly what I wanted to specialize since I started premed." Romelle smiled.

"Do you know anyone here?" He asked. "I know an intern so maybe he can show us around?" Lance wasn't sure if Romelle would want to speak with him outside of lunch. He didn't really have friends outside of the group chat. Lance never really talked with his fellow classmates.

"Sadly I kept my nose in a book all of class. I was hoping to befriend you." She smiled, a sad sort of smile.

"I'm down with being friends. So down." Lance grinned. He picked up a napkin and wiped his mouth. "So you don't have any friends at all?" He winced at how he sounded. "Wow, I'm not usually that insensitive. I meant do you have friends outside of school?" He laughed and so did she.

"It was hard since the move. Small town to the big city was a bit overwhelming for me." Romelle giggled. "So will you be my friend outside of the hospital and school?" She had a hopeful smile.

"Hell yeah!" He exclaimed and she laughed. He saw people begin to pack up so he shoved some food in his mouth. Lance was too nervous to eat anyway. Romelle stuffed her cheeks full of her salad and they rushed to clean up.

"First rounds here we come!" She grinned even though they would only be observing how everything was handled. Since they were new they were to observe the afternoon rounds and take notes.

"After you Dr. Pollux." Lance held open the door for her. Romelle checked the time on her pink wrist watch and straightened her white coat.

"Thank you, Dr. McClain...I hope we become each other's person." Romelle said quietly. She wouldn't meet his eyes but kept pace with him.

"Was that a Grey's Anatomy reference?" He asked her incredulously. She nodded, her eyes bright. "Don't let Dr. Kaltenecker hear that you were his favorite." Lance joked as he pressed the elevator button twice.

"Oh shut it," Romelle rolled her eyes. "I'm serious though. This is my dream hospital. I hope we become and stay close." They stepped into the elevator together.

"Sure I'll be your person," Lance smiled. "But I get to be Meredith." Romelle rolled her eyes. Although they had one conversation together Lance could see them getting along in the future.

"I think I'm more like Cristina anyway." She joked. It was easy to talk to Romelle. Lance was sort of sad that he didn't do it sooner. They could have been friends for way longer.

"I can get us matching pens. Sort of like a weird friendship ritual thing we can have." Lance stated as the elevator brought them to the correct floor.

"I've had friends before you. They came with friendship bracelets as well just so you know." Romelle teased. "Though I wouldn't mind matching pens..."

Lance laughed at her remark. "Score! I'll see what I can find." They stepped out of the elevator continued their first day together.
