39: kisses

"And then he walked me to the door and kissed me on the cheek," Allura spoke as she drove. The silk of her pink top shined when the light from the street lamps hit it. The fabric clung close to her skin like it was made for her. She looked like a goddess. Lance listened as she talked about Lotor. From the way she was beaming he could tell there would be more dates in the future. "It was just so sweet and he's so sweet," she gushed and Lance counted the passing street lights as they drove past them. He honestly didn't quite get it. He had kissed James once and it felt so ordinary. There was nothing Earth shattering about it. He was expecting sparks or even a tingle but he felt nothing. He hadn't even told Romelle about it.

"I miss kissing," Romelle exclaimed from the backseat. "I'm craving kisses," she whined. She wore a black dress that accented every beautiful aspect of her body—which was all of it.

"Kiss somebody tonight," Lance countered, turning to meet her eyes. Somehow she had already smudged her glittery lipgloss. Her hair was down fully and it framed her face and hung to her low back.

She grinned at him, "Maybe I will."

Allura laughed. "I haven't been clubbing in such a long time! I'm so excited," she glanced at Romelle in the mirror. The blonde woman was fixing her smudged lipgloss with her phone's camera.

"We should take pictures!" Romelle exclaimed suddenly and kicked the back of Lance's chair.

"Ow," Lance faked hurt.

"Yes!" Allura shared just as much enthusiasm as her friend.

"Don't you guys think it's weird?" Romelle said suddenly. She was twirling a piece of her hair.

"What's weird?" Lance asked.

"This is your first meeting yet we act like we've been friends forever," she said simply and Lance had to think about it.

Allura glanced at Lance before focusing back on the road. "We've talked for awhile so it does feel like we've known each other for a long time," she winked at him. Lance laughed. It did feel normal to be hanging out with them.

"Any other boy prospects?" Allura asked as she pulled into a spot. They would have to walk the rest of the way but he didn't mind.

"No," Romelle unbuckled and fixed the strap on her high heels. "Still helplessly in love with someone who doesn't love me back."

Lance rolled his eyes. "Fuck Matthew Holt and fuck feelings."

Allura snorted, "She wants to fuck Matt Holt alright." Romelle laughed and Lance fake gagged.

"Gross," he got out of the car. The night air brushed his cheeks and tousled his hair. "I could have gone all night–no, actually gone my whole life without knowing that." He looked over at his friends who were fixing Allura's curls.

"You love all the gritty details," Romelle stuck her tongue out at him. "Like how Matt did this thing with his tongue-"

"Don't finish that sentence ever." His friends laughed and he joined with them. Sometimes it felt really nice just to laugh.

"I would very much be interested in hearing the rest of that story," Allura brought out a tube of lipgloss. "How do you feel about lipgloss?"

"I like it. It looks pretty." Lance gripped his own hands. She grabbed him and applied a thin layer of it across his lips.

"You look beautiful," she smiled.

"You look kissable," Romelle teased. "Can we go now? I wanna dance." Lance laughed at her but they suddenly linked arms with him and were walking toward the club.

"Who's driving back?" Allura asked suddenly. She glanced at her two friends. "I know Romelle wants to get wasted but I think we should have a designated driver."

Lance rolled his eyes. "I'll be the designated driver as long as we can crash at Romelle's," he laughed and Romelle squeezed his arm.

"I like that idea!" She said happily. "It's like one big slumber party!"

As they were walking up Lance stopped short when he saw a pair of familiar faces. "Did you invite them?" He whispered to Romelle. Allura leaned in closer to listen to their conversation.

"No," she whispered back. "Don't you just love the universe!" She laughed. He wasn't sure if he did.

"Oh my god is that Shiro?" Allura walked over to the small group of people. "Dr. Shiro!" She exclaimed and threw her arms around the older male.

"Uh hi," he exclaimed shyly. He met Lance's eyes and smiled. "It's nice to see you." Allura was still hanging off of him. The pair Shiro was with turned around and Lance felt like he was going to pass out. James and Kinkade waved to them. Romelle waved back shyly.

"You guys look beautiful," James complimented. Romelle clung closer to Lance's body. Lance was brought back to the touchy guy at the bar and realized that incident may have left Romelle with some lingering insecurities. He tightened his hold on her to let her know he'd always protect her. Lance hoped it was enough. Kinkade nodded at the pair.

"Thanks," Lance grinned. "So how did you manage to convince homebody Shiro to come out with you?" Allura had finally let him go and they were chatting excitedly about something. James laughed at his comment.

"Honestly not sure," James winked at Lance. The younger male felt his cheeks begin to flush. He hoped that James couldn't see it. "I guess I'm just really persuasive."

Kinkade snorted. "James peer pressured him into coming with us." His smooth voice carried sweetly in the nighttime air.

"It was gentle coaxing," James countered. "Do you guys wanna skip in line with us?"

Allura finally jumped in. "Sadly we can't. The bouncer has been eyeing us for awhile," she nodded over the area near the door. "We'll meet you inside!" she exclaimed with a smile. Lance was glad. He felt like he lost his voice and Romelle still hadn't said anything. Allura linked Lance's free arm with her own and they walked together to the back of the line.

"Kinkade is hot," Romelle said after a moment. "Do you think I should kiss him tonight or will that make things weird at work?"

"James kissed me and we're not weird," Lance said nonchalantly.

"Yeah you're right," Romelle suddenly froze. "Wait hold up! Back up! Full stop! You kissed James?!" She hit his arm. "And you didn't tell me?!"

"Consider us even then," Lance stuck out his tongue at her. Romelle pouted.

"So how was it?" Allura asked. "Do spill the details."

"It's was just..." he trailed off, unable to think of the right words. "I was expecting a lot more."

"Is he not a good kisser?" Romelle giggled at her own question and Lance rolled his eyes.

"No he's fine. It's just I was expecting–"

"Sparks," Allura supplied. "Butterflies and fireworks?" She was smiling at him trying to encourage him to finish his thought.

"Exactly. It was just so anticlimactic," Lance began. "I thought it would be different," he said sadly.

"That's because you just haven't found the right person to kiss," Romelle said knowingly. "Let me spell it out for you," she smiled and grabbed his shirt unbuttoning a few buttons. "K. E. I. T. H."

Allura laughed. "Do you like Keith?" There was a certain gleam in her eyes when she asked and Lance felt himself blush.

"I'm not sure," he said shyly as they shifted forward.

"Not sure my ass," Romelle laughed. "I think you do know how you feel about him," she teased.

"I don't know," he said simply.

"I'll drink to that," Allura grinned. She fixed her top one last time before psyching herself up. "Who's ready to dance?" They still had some time before they would make it inside so they let Allura gush about Lotor again.

When they finally made it inside Shiro was waiting for them near the bar. He had already ordered drinks and Romelle quickly down three before turning and making her way to be in the mass of bodies.

"Should we go with her?" Allura had to yell over the music. Lance shrugged. "I think I'll go with her," she nodded and then was gone. Shiro watched her leave.

"I told Matt that she was here." Shiro took a shot. Lance glared at Shiro but the older male didn't seem to care. "He told me to tell you to watch over her," the doctor looked at his friend. Lance could barely hear him over the music.

"I always do," Lance smiled but wasn't sure if Shiro could hear him.

"I'll be right back," Shiro leaned in close so Lance could hear him. He watched Shiro walk away until he blended into the crowd and became unrecognizable. Lance was left alone at the bar. He sighed and looked down at one of the shots that Shiro left behind and quickly downed at. He set the glass down gently and was reaching for another when someone grabbed his waist.

His basic instincts kicked in as he immediately tried to shove the other person off but then relaxed when he saw who it was. "Sorry didn't mean to scare you," James said quietly and close to Lance's ear. It sent a shiver racing down his spine and caused butterflies to erupt in his stomach.

"I just wasn't expecting it," Lance grinned at him. "Have you been drinking?"

"No. I've been waiting for you," James laughed. "I missed you while you were waiting in line." Lance smiled at that.

"Sure you did," he rolled his eyes trying to play off his blush.

"I did!" James said excitedly. "I thought about you every second until I saw you walk in. You've been running around my head all night it seems." He suddenly leaned down and captured Lance's lips in a chaste kiss. Lance melted. James smiled and went it for another kiss and Lance let him. When the other male wrapped his arms around him to deepen the kiss Lance didn't protest.

It was odd though. James's mouth tasted of alcohol.
