21: fruit snack
Lance turned the page and took a bite of his apple. The slight crunch was barely heard over the noise in the cafeteria. He could barely put the book down it seemed, he was almost done and Lance was determined to finish. Something hit him in the face and he closed his eyes and sighed. He glanced up from the book to stare at the culprit. Romelle was aiming another gummy at him with one of her eyes closed and her tongue peeking out from the corner of her mouth. He raised an eyebrow at her. She grinned at him and popped the fruit snack in her mouth.
"You've been oddly quiet." She mused. Rifling through the package for her favorite gummies, completely disregarding the ones she disliked.
"And you just wasted a gummy." Lance pointed out and bookmarked where he was. He took another bite of his apple and glanced at Keith's neat handwriting sprawled in the margins. Lance wasn't sure why Keith wanted him to read it. He supposed it was a good book but the way the other male was adamant on him reading it made him think there was another reason why Lance needed to read it.
"It was just an orange one." Romelle shrugged. "So are you enjoying your book?" She asked and dropped the packet to take a sip of water.
"I think so. I'm just... I don't know. Maybe I need to reread it. I feel like I'm missing something." He sighed and finally closed the book.
Shiro suddenly sat next to him shoveling a sandwich into his mouth. "Hey sorry I'm late." He nodded at the two of them but continued to eat. It was sort of becoming a regular thing and Lance didn't really mind it.
"How's it going Dr. Shiro?" Romelle tightened her ponytail as she asked the simple question.
"Bad," the older male supplied. "I just stepped on a fruit snack." He took a bite of his sandwich and suspiciously eyed the bright colored package on the table. Romelle flushed.
"That would be Romelle. She threw it at me. Oh protect me Shiro!" Lance exclaimed dramatically and Romelle snickered. "Why were you so late today?" Joking aside he really was worried about Shiro.
"The case I'm working on. I just can't figure out why this woman is sick." He sighed and slowed his eating. "I think I'm going to need to call in a consult." Shiro looked down at his sandwich again. "I hate not being able to help people." It was quiet around their table. They all seemed to agree.
"Well I hope you find out why she's here!" Romelle exclaimed and slid the rest of the fruit snacks to Lance. Lance offered some to Shiro. "I'm sure you'll be able to do it." She smiled at him and went to throw out her trash.
"Did your lunch consist of an apple and some fruit snacks." Shiro regarded him with careful eyes. Lance knew he was trying to come off as brotherly but his chest still warmed with that familiarity that he loathed. He cleared his throat and put Keith's book in his pocket. The thought of finishing completely slipping his mind.
"No I had sandwich earlier." He smiled and Romelle sat back down. She relaxed into her chair with a groan. Lance knew immediately what was wrong. "Your feet hurt because you're wearing the wrong shoes." He pointed out crumbling the packet in his hands and chucking it at her. She hit it to the floor and groaned again.
"You really are wearing terrible shoes." Shiro pointed out and pulled a protein bar from his pocket.
"Shitty shoes." Lance laughed and Shiro nudged him halfheartedly.
"Sorry I want to actually look cute. You do realize this is pretty much are dating pool right? When we're here we hang out and then when we leave we still end up hanging out!" Romelle exclaimed. She had a point. The only people he saw were the people in his class and the doctors around the hospital. Maybe he should start looking for a date with the people here. He practically flushed thinking about it.
Shiro shifted in his seat, tearing his bar in half so Lance could have some. Lance took it gratefully and began munching on it. "Yeah I get that but hear me out... Comfort over style all the way." He teased and Romelle rolled her eyes.
"Yeah okay hear me out... Shut up." She stuck her tongue out at him and pulled a pen from her pocket to twirl in between her fingers.
"Alright enough about Romelle's terrible shoes." Lance spoke through his bite of food.
"Gross." Romelle grumbled. "Chew with your mouth closed." Lance gave her a look.
"I held your hair back while you puked I think I can talk with my mouth full without being called out." Romelle flushed again as Shiro laughed. Her embarrassment shone on her cheeks and the bridge of her nose.
"I didn't realize how much of a lightweight you were Dr. Pollux." Shiro grabbed a napkin to wipe at the corners of his mouth. He patted his pockets and took out his phone to text someone, Lance was tempted to look at the screen but restrained himself.
"I'm not a lightweight!" She exclaimed defensively. "I just happen to mix my alcohols terribly." She crossed her arms across her chest as Lance laughed. Shiro nudged him again and he stopped laughing and cleared his throat.
"Sorry Romelle." He mumbled. "Please don't revoke our best friend card." He clasped his hands out in front of him like a plea or prayer.
Her face instantly softened and she turned to mush. "Oh of course not! You're my person!" She smiled widely.
"Too many Grey's Anatomy references." Shiro shook his head but had a smile on his face. "I honestly prefer Chicago Med."
"What's a Chicago Med?" Lance asked and received an over exaggerated gasp from Shiro. Romelle leaned forward, obviously intrigued by the exchange.
"Only my favorite show ever. Man you have to watch." Shiro looked at him with a playful disbelief in his eyes. "Tell me you heard of it?" His dark gaze settled on Romelle who simply shook her head. "Oh man! Next time we all have a day off together we're watching it." Lance's heart began to swell. Shiro wanted to hangout with them.
Romelle practically squealed with joy. "We can get movie snacks and stay in our pajamas! This will be so much fun! Where are we doing it though?"
"Mine. I got the boxsets last Christmas and we can watch the rest on Hulu." Shiro explained. "We'll need to exchange numbers though..." He trailed off.
"I believe I can remedy this." Lance began. "I was thinking about inviting Romelle to join Voltron." Shiro's eyes brightened at the mention while confusion danced on Romelle's features.
"Okay wait, wait, wait! What's a Voltron?" She asked with her head tilted slightly from the curiosity.
"It's a chatting app our friend made and there's a few other people on it. It's got a messaging and calling feature on it so it's pretty convenient" Lance explained. He looked over at Shiro who was counting on his fingers for some reason. He was probably counting the members and Lance found it cute.
"There's eight of us that use it. Some of us are friends and see each other all the time and others we haven't even met yet. So it's really kind of cool." Shiro explained.
"Is it like a super secret club?!" Romelle beamed and Lance laughed.
"Not so much secret but definitely exclusive." Shiro said sheepishly.
"And I'm going to be invited. Wow!" She looked down at her phone like at any moment the app might just happen to show up. "How and when?" She asked excitedly.
"I'll give Pidge your email and she'll send you an email with a file. Download it onto your phone and you're done." Lance grinned.
"That's so cool!" She sighed contently. "So when can I get an invite?" She began twirling her pen again.
"Today if you want." Lance nodded as Shiro began cleaning up the remainder of his lunch. It was time to leave already. Lunch seemed to go by so fast. Lately Lance felt like he hadn't had much time for anything. Shiro waved at them before departing for the ER again. Lance and Romelle waved goodbye to him before heading back up to their floor. "Almost done with Kaltenecker." He pointed out.
"Then on to psych." Romelle nodded but something about her was different. Lance didn't know what it was. She pushed the door close button a few times. The doors slid shut in front of them and Lance turned to Romelle.
"You don't like psych?" Lance gazed at her earnestly. She shrugged but couldn't meet his blue eyes. "Why not?"
"I just... I don't want to talk about it. Maybe some other time or something, yeah?" Suddenly the air seemed thick and his clothes felt too tight and Romelle suddenly seemed further away then ever. Her body language told him she was uncomfortable and he cleared his throat.
"Yeah." His throat seemed to be full of thorns. The word barely reached her ears and she seemed grateful for the doors opening. Romelle stepped off like she had to get away from the situation or him. Lance felt incredibly guilty for asking her.
"McClain!" Lance turned at the sound of Kaltenecker's voice. A tablet was thrusted into his hands and the older doctor pointed him in the direction of the room. "You're the lead on this case." His heart seemed to jump into his throat. He got to lead on a case! "Get to work." Lance started walking and he felt Romelle's eyes on his back. He wanted to go see if she was okay. There was something about the look in her eyes that made him worry. He tried to think about anything else but couldn't. Lance worried about her and he turned to see her assigned to another patient.
The smile plastered on her face was forced. Her movements were stiff and she looked utterly crushed. Something bad must have happened. Lance just couldn't figure out what and for some reason he felt like it was his fault. He cleared his throat and knocked on the door stepping into the room and reciting his practiced line for the millionth time since he started his rotation.
"Hi my name is Lance McClain and I'm a third year medical student. Is it alright if I work with you today?"
