"CANNONBALL!" The sound of the wind rushing past his ears was exhilarating for Delta. After 2 years of danger and fighting, he was grateful for any peace he got. And this, was one of them.
He curled up in a ball as he was falling, until suddenly changing into a smooth dive, gracefully slipping into the river below. As he came back up, he saw Mudslides head peeking at him from the cave above. "Come on!" He called. "The water's awesome!" Chirps was all that responded, followed by Mudslides shaking head. Delta sighed. "Come on! You're an otter for Phyrria's sake! And this is water! You should love this!" Mudslide just yelped and backed away. After a minute of intense eye-rolling, Delta finally came up with an idea.
"Wow!" He yelled. "This water feels amazing!" He splashed around, exaggerating every movement. "Ooh look! Fish! This will taste awesome after going FIVE WHOLE DAYS without food!" He made sure to exaggerate him eating the fish. "There's just so much! If only I had someone to share it-" Delta was cut off by a furry ball landing almost on top of his snout. Due to a year of being on the run, and the skills the Nightwing taught him, his reflexes were honed almost to perfection. This enabled him to block the incoming splash with his wing, while also simultaneously grabbing a nearby fish that swam to close. After the splash had ended, Delta lowered his wing and began to laugh. Apparently, someone was hungry! A fuzzy brown head popped right in front of him, chirping indignantly. "I know, I know!" Delta lamented as he handed Mudslide the fish he caught. Mudslide gobbled it up, clearly starving after going 5 days with no food and no rest.
5 days ago, Delta was ambushed by a few Mudwings when he was scavenging by a river. Luckily, he had been able to grab Mudslide and escape, but not before some damage had been done.
Not to him or Mudslide of course. It was the Mudwings, by that he meant that one of them probably wouldn't be able to fly again. The very idea of HIM, of all dragons being taken by surprise. However, being constantly chased by vengeful Mudwings has taken a toll on them. Let's just say his brain wasn't firing on all cylinders...
Sometime in the afternoon...
"UGGGH!" Delta yelled. "WHY WON'T THIS DAMN THING MOVE?!" He had been trying, for the better part of a century, to move a boulder that had fallen conveniently right in front of the entrance to his cave. He tried to push using his talons, but that just scrapped them down. Delta sat down, out of breath from the exertion. Three moons, can't he catch a break? That's it, "MUDSLIDE!" He called. "GET DA CACTI!" The cacti in question, were dragonflame cacti, which were HIGHLY explosive, perfect for destroying pesky boulders. Mudslide scampered away, returning a minute later with pink prickly pods in his paws. Delta grabbed them, attached a reed string to each and joined them together before placing the cacti around the boulder. "You ready for this?" He asked Mudslide. Mudslide chirped before ducking behind a nearby dirt mound. Smart. Delta smiled. "Let's do this!" He took a deep breath, before unleashing a small, "controlled" flame, setting the reed fuses ablaze.
Delta sprinted to join Mudslide, but just as he reached the safety of the mound, he stopped, and with wide-eyes, he wanted to mentally beat himself the actual fuck up. "DAMN IT!" He roared. He was being hunted in the Mudwings home turf. WHAT IN PHYRRIAS SAKE WAS HE DOING USING EXPLOSIVES!!! "Got to put it out" he thought, before ordering Mudslide to stay here. He rushed to put it out, but it was too late. He saw the fuse hit the cacti, and before he knew it, he was being thrown back from the explosion. He heard ringing in his ears, and then, he took the best nap he had in a while.
Black. Just that inky darkness. Delta could only just float in it. But wait, what was that? ...Ringing? And, chirping? All of a sudden, he felts furry something slap his face, and suddenly,
he was awake.
Delta opened his blurry eyes to see a fuzzy otter peering at him, chirping worriedly. He knew it had a name, but he couldn't remember. Was it, Mud Puddle? No. Water Slide? No, that hadn't been invented yet. How about Mud Water? WTF was he thinking with THAT? Wait, it was, MUDSLIDE!
All of a sudden, it all came rushing back to him. The boulder, dragonflame cacti, the blast, and more importantly, HE JUST SET OFF A LOUD AND SMOKEY EXPLOSIVE IN THE HEART OF THE MUD KINGDOM!
"Man, maybe Qibli was right..." he didn't want to follow that depressing thought. He pulled himself up, but immediately clutched his head. It hurt like hell, and the ringing was starting to worry him. Fortunately, it didn't stop him from seeing the approaching Mudwing squad. "Uh oh." He thought.
It was lead by non other than Crocodile, a damaged Mudwing who for some reason had it out especially for him. Recently, she was sporting a brand new scar on her face. It looked like as if someone had tried to peel her face off, but when they tried to put it back on, it caught on fire while being stung by thousands of scorpions. During one of their previous encounters, when Delta asked her about it, she just tried to rip his throat out. "Somebody's touchy." He grumbled. He grabbed Mudslide and put him on his back.
"Get him!" She roared as the Mudwings executed a dive toward Delta. "Sorry, can't stay!" Delta yelled back before running for his flipping life. "Hang on Mudslide!" Delta sprinted for a waterfall, hoping to lose them. All around them, the forest was on fire, with Mudwings shooting down balls of flame all around them. Almost there...
The Mudwings were starting to get nervous as the waterfall neared. "We can't go there!" One of them exclaimed. "The rainforest is down there!" "Yeah, you heard what happened to Alligators squad!" Another agreed. "They were massacred!" Crocodile grumbled. As much as she hated for that, thing, to escape, she had to agree with them. The rainforest was no place for a Mudwing, especially with those attacks happening. Wimps. "Fine! We can turn around and go report to Queen Moorehen on why we lost him." "Meanwhile" she pointed to the two who had spoken up." You can patrol the border and look out for him." The 2 Mudwings gulped. They just had to speak!
"Why are they falling back?" Delta wondered out loud. Mudslide chirped in response. Something was wrong. Suddenly Mudslide chittered excitedly, slapping his paw on Deltas snout."What is wro-" He turned back just in time for him to witness himself tripping into the fast flowing river.
"Mudslide!" Delta called frantically. This water was fast, pounding him to the bottom repeatedly. Even his Seawing swimming wasn't working. Good thing for gills. Through the roar, he spotted a dark shape struggling with the force of the water. "Mudslide! Over here!" Delta used his tail to propel toward the otter. He reached for him, his efforts rewarded with a furry body. Delta grabbed Mudslide, putting him on his back. "I got you!" The poor thing was shivering like crazy, his claws digging into Deltas scales. Delta knew there was no way to go except forward. Once you were in, there was no way out.
He rolled over, grabbing Mudslide and putting him on his belly. He wrapped his wings and tail around him, before tucking his head and tail in the ball as well. "I got you." he thought, as the water gave way, and for a minute, he was floating. But then, gravity took hold, and they fell.
