PART THIRTY THREE
5.
Time, as it always does, moves on. The years come and go. A night of celebration would take a twenty-seven-year-old Sammy to a club only a few days after his own Birthday. The music played loud, and dancing was plentiful. One young lady in particular, barely in her twenties if even that, would unintentionally grab Sammy's attention. One of the club lights shone directly upon her as if Sammy was meant to find her or at least make contact.
This particular lady, neither she nor those near her reacted to the light shining down, it were as if it weren't actually there or as if it weren't shining directly upon her. Sammy found this to be both odd and intriguing. Yeah, maybe light was showing him someone he needed to turn his attention towards and maybe someone else was having a hand in this moment or maybe coincidence is an actual thing, plain and simple, and in this moment, coincidence had come to join in on the party. Whatever this moment is, Sammy just had to go introduce himself.
'Hi, do I know you?' he asks with little hesitation.
'Is that the only line you know? ... And does it ever work?' she asks having turned her head to look at him and taking a second or two to contemplate this moment. Her questions asked neither invitingly or with distain.
'Not a line, I am genuinely curious ... and I'll let you know if it were to work. My name is Sammy Fontaine.'
'Nice name ... Sammy Fontaine ...' she says with a smile. 'I'm Abigail ... Abigail Smith.'
'You don't have any older sisters, do you?'
'Why? Am I below your age range? I am twenty-one, you know.'
'I don't have a particular range, it's just that maybe I might know your sister if you have one, and maybe this is why you seem so familiar?'
'I do have two sisters but not older, both are younger. It's highly unlikely you would know either of them'. For some reason or other and despite the loud music, she feels the need to discuss her sisters with this Sammy Fontaine fellow.
'Oh right, okay ... Em ... can I buy you a drink?'
'Alright so ... Sammy Fontaine ... I'll allow you to buy me a drink.'
'You are old enough for a drink, right? I wouldn't do anything illegal here, would I?'
She throws a curious look Sammy's way ... 'what? You don't believe me? Do you not think I look twenty-one?' ...
Yeah, this is the beginning of something in particular here or at least it could be.
Long before this club moment, years in fact, Sammy had been shown a place. This place would not just be a place where he could find employment as much as it would be a place to be assigned to, an assignment he could choose to accept, which he freely did and still does. This place shown to Sammy is not entirely bright, if anything it belongs to darkness. It is somewhere where Light had the need to sneak in a spy. It is a place not entirely filled with shadow though there is more shadow than light.
This place is a kind of middle ground, taken advantage of and definitely run by darkness, so Sammy's position would ensure and enforce a light like presence but then again, he is what he is and Darkness has vowed to come knocking on Sammy's door once again somewhere down the line. Darkness too knows Light will come to this place and Darkness doesn't care about what Light might do.
Yeah, it didn't take all so long for Sammy to figure out that Abigail Smith is a big sister to Majella Smith, sure Abigail basically tells him about Majella. Majella has been gone, gone and in that place where Sammy has come to work, for close to three years by the time the night club meeting with Abigail happens.
With there being a mix of light and dark, Sammy could not just out the fact of where a younger sister was being held, is being held in this moment, however in doing so lives could be endangered. Keep quiet and work with what he has is all he could do. Yeah, that saying the Lord moves in mysterious ways really makes more sense that it ever did before. If anything, that saying can be applied to two ... lords.
Not quite discussing what he does know, or even letting on he knows anything at all, Sammy makes a request of Abigail. He tells her to write her sister a letter as if she may actually get to read it sometime in the not too distant future. As compelled to talk to Sammy as she has been Abigail is also compelled to write that letter, so write it she does. Delivery will not be immediate; Majella though will get her letter and Sammy of course makes sure of that.
If only he could have known that a life is nearing an end whether he speaks or remains quiet then maybe he could have done something about it. Perhaps this is why Light brought her his way. Still, an 'if only' is something which could be said over and over for some time to come.
His years working with Light after leaving Darkness behind indeed brought him somewhere where both light and darkness hold grips. That certain hospital is where he would come to be for some time to come is almost a neutral grounds. It is a place where some seek light and improvement and get it too though it is also a place where shadow takes advantages and more than its fair share too.
And for Sammy, being in such a place came with many a surprise, one of which being the arrival of a visitor, a visitor coming to visit a certain employee rather than a guest. The first visitor to come to such an establishment once Sammy's position became secure and long term was a visitor who came long before a special teen or two would come to stay. This visitor would be a woman Sammy had not seen in over fourteen years.
Yeah, she looked older, somewhat frail perhaps too but strong at the same time and happy too. Her visit indeed was for no patient or guest, it indeed was meant for Sammy. Even though he knew her straight away, it did take a moment or two for it to fully sink in.
'Mother?' he would ask after that moment or two after having spied that incoming guest.
'Yes dear, who did you think I was? I'm not the devil, you know.'
Her devotion to the Lord of light has likely granted her something despite all the darkness she has had to live so many years with. If mum knew where to find Sammy, then he would believe her if she were to tell him Light led her here.
Oh, I know the Devil alright Sammy thought to himself, and you ain't he, though I would lay down dead before his kind ever gets to you again.
