Chapter 9: Show-off
The rest of the week went by smoothly. Dainu had no trouble with fitting in at all, since he is now the most popular and unique student in the school. Every student, teacher, and even lunch ladies fell in love with Dainu. He was the only one who was unique, magical, most beautiful, and extremely kind to everyone. Carmen wanted to be in that category when she said, "What about me?" in a fake goody-goody way.
Everyday when we entered school, everyone would stop what they are doing and goes over to Dainu, greeting him, shaking his hand, touching him. I was like the bodyguard when I tell everyone to back away and give us some space. One girl came up to Dainu and started shaking his hand wildly, and started talking about herself really fast. Dainu stood there patiently, nodding at her. I had to cut her off since she was taking up our time.
I told Dainu he needed supplies for school, but it looked like all the information in the universe was plot there in his head. He didn't jot down any notes; he answered every question the teachers asked with no second thought. But some teachers were getting tired of Dainu answering every question and wanted somebody else to answer. That's when they picked on me, and I looked at them clueless. I begged Dainu to give me the answer, but the teachers said I can't use Dainu like an encyclopedia. That was so unfair.
At the time when gym came, that's when things started to get hyped up. All the jocks came to Dainu and demand him to challenge them.
"I do not wish to challenge any of you. It would not seem morally proper to flaunt my skills," Dainu told them.
"Yeah!" I butted. "He doesn't want to challenge you. Bug off, you jerks!"
"We're not leaving until shows us what he's go," said Mark, the jock leader. "I want this green boy to prove how good he is. Unless, he's...chicken!"
Mark and his gang roared with laughter and clucked like chickens. I hate jocks so much; they're so immature.
"I would like to challenge you," Dainu said, "if you tell me what a chicken is."
They laughed some more.
"Forget them, Dainu," I said. "They're just jerks; they like to put new students down. Just ignore them."
"That's right, run along, punks!" Mark teased. His gang laughed some more. I hope their tonsils fall out.
I grabbed Dainu's arm, and tugged him away. But he didn't move.
"Come on, Dainu," I begged, tugging on his arm.
"Wait," he said. Then he turned to Mark. "I do not like people taunting the innocent. It is rude, uncivilized, and immoral. I will accept you challenge. But I must inform you, none of you can defeat me."
You go boy, I thought. I was amazed how he smart-talked them. And he didn't even curse, raised his voice, or insult them. He said it in a nice, appropriate way.
"AWRIGHT!!" shouted Mark. "We got us a challenge! But don't get too smart, brother. I'm the best one in this school, so we shall see who gets defeated."
Dainu smiled, and shook hands with Mark. Let the challenges begin.
It was getting really crazy when the news about Dainu challenging the jocks got out. Everyone went out to the field to see what they were going to do. Even Miss. Lowe, the gym teacher, came to watch the fun. The first challenge was shot put. Mark explained the rules to Dainu, and also bragged how far he can throw the ball, which was about thirty feet. First Mark threw his shot put ball; it landed around thirty five feet. When it was Dainu's turn, he picked up the ball with no trouble. I've heard those shot put balls were heavy, but Dainu picked it up like it was light as a feather. Dainu threw the ball, and it flew high into the sky. It disappeared when it touched the sky, and as it came down, it landed all the way at the end of the field. Everyone gasped, the jocks dropped their jaws. Miss. Lowe ran towards the ball and estimated how far it was. It was more than a hundred twenty feet. Everyone cheered for Dainu, instead of the jocks for the first time. I even saw one of the jocks clapping for Dainu, too, but his friend gave him a sour look.
Next was the pole vault contest. One of the jocks leaped over the pole to show Dainu how it's done. Dainu leaped over too, with no mistakes. He even landed on his feet like a cat, without breaking a leg. But Dainu had more surprises up his sleeve. Without using the pole, he ran up towards the pole, leaped up as high as a gazelle, and went over without any mistakes or trips. There was another gasp and cheer from the crowd.
Then, there was the mile race. Arnold Mockery, one of the jocks in Mark's gang, was the fastest runner. But he will get a major breakthrough once he sees how fast Dainu can run. As soon as Miss. Lowe pulled the trigger, the race was on, and Dainu was already ahead. He was unbelievably fast than anything we ever seen before. He was faster than a cheetah, faster than a jet plane, faster than a speeding...well, you get the idea. Arnold already gave up when he saw how fast Dainu was. Dainu came up behind him, patted his hand on his shoulder, and held out his other hand. Arnold looked at him, but then gave in and shook his hand. Everyone cheered for true sportsmanship.
"You're good, man. Real good!" said Mark, after gym. "Maybe you can join our group some time."
"Sorry, guys, Dainu sticks with me," I said. "I'm, like, his personal tour guide to this school and the Earth."
"Or his personal girlfriend!" mocked one of the jocks.
They burst into laughter again.
I rolled my eyes. "You guys are so annoying! Come on, Dainu, let's get to class."
The news about Dainu beating every jock in every sport spread all over the school like fire. Students started babbling questions to Dainu about it. It was getting annoying, but Dainu didn't mind. Soon, most of the students or teachers started coming up to Dainu asking for help with things, like fixing a computer, hanging a banner, or figuring out a math problem. Everyone looked at Dainu as not only the most popular alien in school, but as a helping tool box. Now I started to feel like I'm not his personal tour guide anymore. I started to get annoyed and I'm not sure if it was the hormones. I don't mind everyone else being nice to Dainu and treating him like a "normal" human being, but this was getting extremely ridiculous. I just wanted everyone to take a breather for once, that's all I wanted.
At lunch, my friends, Dainu, and I sat at a lunch table, eating and talking. When all of a sudden, a hot guy named Kyle or Chris (I can never remember his name) came to our table and told Dainu what he heard about him mastering the jocks. Dainu told him truthfully, and the guy started challenging him to an arm wrestling match. I told him to bug off, but Dainu said I shouldn't be rude (whatever). Dainu accepted the challenge, and the guy scooted my friends and I away so that they can have some space. As soon as they grip hands and lock in arms, Dainu defeated him in three seconds.
It wasn't a struggle at all for Dainu, the other guy was struggling really hard to bring his arm down, but it didn't budge a tiny bit. The hot guy was amazed and complimented on how strong Dainu was and how he never met anyone that was super strong. Another guy witnessed the arm wrestling match, too, and insisted on taking the challenge. Dainu beat him too. Soon all the students in the lunchroom started to notice the arm wrestling match and they all started to watch with astonishment. After every failure, a new guy insisted on the challenge, even a very strong girl participated and end up failing. Everyone cheered for Dainu, but Dainu was too modest to show off, of course.
Then a very big, very strong, bulky guy named Archie came up and participated in the challenge. Archie was very strong than all the other guys in the school, but he won't be after his match. Archie started babbling how strong he is and how he can crush someone's hand like a piece of paper. Dainu just grinned. Dainu pinned down his hand and everyone gasped, Archie's was the loudest.
He looked at his hand and then at Dainu, who continued to smile cheerfully. Archie started shouting at the top of his lungs; cursing, gesturing, and threatening him. Dainu just sat their silently smiling. He held out his hand to him; Archie looked at it in disgust. Slowly, a smile rose up his face, and he took Dainu's hand and gave it a wild shake. Everyone cheered.
I was starting to get more and more aggravated. Dainu was showing off his super strength and powers, and he didn't even notice. I barely talked to him throughout the week, but he knew something was wrong with me anyway.
"What is wrong?" he asked me.
"Nothing," I said tonelessly.
"Do not lie, Kaley," he said. "I can sense your jealousy. You are suffering from grief and jealousy, what is distressing you?"
I blurted out. "You wanna know what's distressing me?! It's you! You're overdoing it with all your super strength, superpower, super speed, and super other stuff you do. You're showing off yourself just because you're from a different planet that's better than ours. You think you're so special, like some golden child. You just gotta show off your superpowers just because you're different being from another planet."
I was so upset I wasn't thinking about what I was saying. That's what stress and PMS does to me.
Dainu looked at me, helplessly. "Kaley, you know I am not the kind of being that would show off―"
"But you are," I interrupted. "You're showing off you're powers and you don't even know it. At first it was cool the way you beat all the jocks in every sport, but now you're overdoing it. Just like with the arm wrestling match at lunch, you could have said no thanks, but you were showing everyone how strong you are. Then it's the teachers. Sure, they really like you, but now you're like their special pet and you're allowing that. You help hang a banner on the wall with your levitation; you unlock the hidden answers in physics with your mind over matter. It's just too much, too much!"
You are probably thinking I'm losing it now. Maybe I was, but I was just so upset how Dainu is showing himself off to everybody and it felt like I was invisible or something. Maybe Dainu's right, I am jealous.
Dainu suddenly looked guilty, and looked at me with apologetic eyes. "You are right," he said. "I have been showing off to everybody, and I did not even realize it. I should have been cautious of myself; I completely misplaced my moderation. I did not mean to distress you like this. Will you forgive me for my inconsiderate actions and conceitedness?"
I just looked at him; my mind was swirling with an answer. Now I felt tears coming up.
"I don't know," I said, swallowing my tears. I turned away from him to hide my emotions.
"Are you weeping?" he said with concern.
"No," I choked, which gave away the answer.
Dainu put his hand on my shoulder. "My sincere apologies."
I looked at him; he was smiling a sad smile. Even though it was a sad smile, it warmed my heart. I knew he was sorry and he didn't know what he was doing. I wiped my eyes and forgave him.
"I'm sorry, too," I said, gulping away my tears. "I was getting jealous. I don't know why, but I'm over it now. Besides, I was, like, PMS-ing all over."
"Premenstrual syndrome cycling?" he asked.
I laughed. "Yeah, that."
Man, I was a mess! But I'm glad I got that out of me.
Friday finally came. Dainu was still thrilled and joyful to come back tomorrow. I told him there was no school on the weekends, and that we only go to school five days a week. Dainu looked disappointed, like he had lost his privilege of school work. He told me that on his planet, they go to school the whole week without take a break on the weekends. The only time they get breaks is on special occasions and at the end of the school year. He also told me he studies six to eight hours every day. If I studied that long I would have a brain tumor. I asked him if he ever gets tired or bored with school, but he smiled and said knowledge is never boring.
That was a logical answer.
We walked home together, but I kept a good eye out for Dean. No sign of his car on the driveway. We went inside our houses; I promised Dainu I would see him during the weekend, as long as I'm not being stalked. I plopped myself on the couch and started watching Lifetime.
"Hi, sweetie," Mom called. "How was your day?"
"Great!" I answered.
"Do you have any plans over the weekend?"
"Not really," I said. "Why?"
"Well, I was wondering if you and Dean could hang out with each other."
WHAT!? I wanted to shout.
"Dean and I discussed that you and him need more quality time together. He's been very busy with work and he hasn't seen much of this town. So I was thinking you can show him around town, show him your favorite shopping place, café, or hangouts. I think that would be wonderful."
"I think that would be a bad idea," I protested.
"Kaley," Mom said. "Now you have been too harsh on this man and I think you need to know a little more about him. He's a nice guy; I don't understand why you don't like him."
"Because he keeps throwing questions at my face!" I said annoyed. "He keeps looking at me funny, and he hides all that from you and keeps bothering me with his looks and his questions. Why can't you see that?"
"Kaley, I don't want to argue about this," she confirms. "I know a nice guy like Dean wouldn't do such a thing. You have been pushing him too much, and you should give him a chance and to get to know him better."
"You just like him because you're trying to replace him with dad!" I said. Now I know I shouldn't have said that, but it slipped out. All this anger and hatred for Dean is driving me crazy, and my own Mom doesn't believe me.
Mom went pale and petrified like she saw a ghost. She gulped a huge lump in her throat and straightened up.
"Kaley, I don't want this discussion anymore," she said through clinched teeth. "You are going to show Dean around town, whether you like it or not, and that is final!"
I huffed. "Fine!"
I stomped up to my room, and slammed the door.
