rants \\ Grammar

"grammar refers to the way words are used, classified, and structured together to form coherent written or spoken communication"

Extended Title: Wattpad + Grammar;  Spelling, Paragraph Length, Punctuation

IMPORTANT: Don't take this criticism too much to heart if English is not your first language or you have some sort of mental disorder that affects the above (i'm not ridiculing you, I promise). Thanks.

Also, I love you all even if some of the below applies to you unless you refuse to correct the mistake.

Now, since I'm oh-so-kind, this rant will not only say it in a too-harsh way, but it will also give you a mini guide for publishing on Wattpad.

Allow me to make one thing clear when it comes to writing on Wattpad:

You do NOT need to add the tab before a paragraph.

No, it's not a bad decision if you do, as many won't care. But, you see, doing this does not give you the privilege of having your readers stick around despite you having excruciatingly long paragraphs.

Yes. Long paragraphs.

That's one of the many points I wish to make during this rant.

I don't understand how you even proofread with such long paragraphs.

Yes, Wattpad does have a small reading section, but so it's more pleasant for your readers, you should shorten the paragraphs to adjust to this. A really long paragraph should consist of 6 lines- in the editor, at most. Whereas a really short one can even be as little as one word. Also, 6 lined paragraphs shouldn't be frequently used, either.

I hope you all know why long paragraphs are unpleasant.

But if you don't, here's why:

- it's hard to keep track of where you are.

- it's just- askjfgfuidkanymore

spelling

excuses for continuous poor spelling:

"it was a typo!"

"i'm not a good speller!"

Yeah, okay, we all have typos in our stories at some point or another, whether we figure it out early or suffer the humiliation of having it pointed out a year later. But a typo per paragraph? Looks like someone didn't bother to properly proofread.  Readers will appreciate if you do proofread before publishing, that, I promise you.

You're not a good speller, huh? Can't identify mistakes, hmm?

AND I THOUGHT WATTPAD HAD  AN AUTOMATIC SPELL-CHECKER. No, the spell-check on Wattpad does not correct mistakes, but it does identify them. I mean, it certainly forgot to identify Wattpad as an actual word, but yeah, all the other correctly spelled English words on Earth won't be underlined in red.

LISTEN HUN, WHY THE F*** DO YOU THINK AUTO STUPID CORRECT EXISTS?

To help with spelling and some grammar. Half the world hates it 'cause of it's typos, but it's there.

NOW, WHAT ABOUT GRAMMARLY, HUH?

It's a free chrome extension that checks and improves your grammar, word choice, spelling, punctuation, sentence structure, I could go on.

NOW, before I have to write a full essay about this, if you're a bad speller or struggle with grammar, DOWNLOAD GRAMMARLY OR SOME OTHER GOOD SPELLING + GRAMMAR CHECKER.

punctuation

Ok, listen, I get that sometimes characters are screaming so loud you have to use capital letters or a 50 exclamation marks-

not.

If you want to capitalize something, it has to be really -italic, bold AND underlined really, important. also, you shouldn't just capitalize an entire sentence. it's fine for ranting in a/ns, but not in the actual chapter.

It disturbs readers and makes it seem like you're practically yelling at them, not the character yelling at another.

SO PLEASE, DON'T WRITE FULL SENTENCES LIKE THIS UNLESS YOU NEED TO RANT.

Also, why tf would you need to put 50 exclamation marks? Like $@#^  I've seen some people put multiple exclamation marks AND write the following words in any format:

- "she exclaimed"

- "he/she yelled"

- "[insert name] exclaimed/yelled/screamed"

SERIOUSLY? the reader already knows that thanks to your use of punctuation.

no, stop.

Accidents are okay, and texting included like this is cool too.

But STOP OVERUSING it while writing in stories, just STOP.

-

A/N - please, remember, it's okay to make these mistakes once in a while, but acknowledge them once they are pointed out for you- don't make an excuse for them being there. I'm sure almost all our very little kid selves would've made these mistakes.

I'll shut up now before the word count goes over my essay's lol.
