Chapter 70: Concealed

“That's fine, Chief Wu… I'll call Namjoon or my father to pick me up! I don't want you to stress about it. Please go home for the day.” Jimin assured and made a smile to himself. However, he hid how nerve-racking it felt for the elder to ask if he wanted a ride. This was something the Chief would never ask. He was closed off most of the time and this alone struck many questions into Jimin's mind. He just couldn't understand what made the older man change his mind so suddenly. From a silent and secretive Chief, Jimin never really thought he'd hear his own boss offer him a ride home! What was he playing at now?

“Don't bother them. How bad can a ride with me really be? Come on, let's not wait another second.” The elder pursued after Jimin to get him out of the facility. He just couldn't risk Jimin finding out the controls to the B248 hidden within the office, so he offered to take him home. The elder was rather paranoid when it came to hiding such a big secret that could end him as well. In his own universe, his mind orbited through many calculations to avoid getting caught. Even if it meant offering Jimin a ride home, he couldn't let anyone slip from his hands. Anything could lead to the secret coming out eventually. “I need rest.”

“Then you can go now! Taking me home and then driving yourself home is such a hassle, I just can't-”

“Let's go, now. You're too attached to that boy. You need to give him some time while he's in space.” Claimed the Chief. He struck Jimin where he knew Jimin just couldn't refuse and he kept telling the young man to join him; so, what other choice did he have? Even if this was his own boss speaking, Jimin couldn't turn down the offer much longer. “Are you coming with me?”

“Not like I could say no.” Jimin thought in his head and stood up to follow along the elder. It was awkward, yet, very suspicious. Normally, the Chief would be in his own office all day and Mr. Park would be the one acting more of a boss to everyone. This is what set Jimin back the most. On the other hand, he had no idea what the elder was hiding under his sleeve throughout the many years he conducted many expeditions; along with Jimin's as well.

Eventually, they reached a black Kia Optima car that was freshly waxed and the reflection within the coat shined. The tires blended in with the black coat of it and the blue within the headlights glew. Jimin was still uncomfortable riding with his boss home and nervously placed his hand over his own elbow. He wanted to ask why the elder suddenly wanted to be kind to him now, but he didn't have it in him to ask and come off so rude.

The car ride was silent, Jimin sat in the passengers seat right by the elder and kept his hands intertwined with his own. Only the sound of the air rushing in through the small air-conditioned dashboard, roared as the car was speeding through the empty streets at night. Jimin held his phone up where the GPS gave the Chief instructions to the younger astronaut's home, but he grew anxious each time his directions were given out so suddenly. “You live very far…” Called out the elder as Jimin only nodded his head. “Nervous? I could tell. I never give rides out to my employees. So, you should be lucky.”

“Thank you…” Jimin replied and avoided eye contact right after.

“Hey… About the whole mission those two are doing to rescue the B248, do you think they'll be successful? It was supposed to be you up there.” Brought up the elder as Jimin slowly turned his head and focused on the older man.

“If I was to go… There would have been a greater chance I wouldn't come back ever again…” Jimin mentioned and watched how the Chief shrugged his own shoulders.

“Those were possibilities, Dr. Park. But what do I know? I’m only an old man with a higher degree in physics, a masters degree in engineering, and I am head Chief of the Korean Star Constellation Unit. I think you would have survived, you've lasted a year up there. Why not another mission?”

“I nearly died up there, Chief Wu. Even when I came back, I've had near-death experiences. Just ask my Father. It took so long to adjust.”

“But you didn't. You were strong from the start. Lasted one earth year up there and came back better than ever. Having many people utter your name while watching the news and smile at you in public. Let alone the many opportunities we were given as well. Even then you had possibilities of dying in space. But you didn't. That's the good part, you didn't. Even if there was a greater chance you'd die back then, you still took up the challenge and here you are. Strong and healthy now. Say the two up there was stuck for two earth years…” Added the Chief and Jimin just couldn't believe his own words.

“That would kill them… There's two astronauts up there… Not just me! There will be a chance that one of them would die or collapse. Short air to live off from and the resources as well. Surely one year on earth is a couple of days in space or a week, but that alone is dangerous… Don't say things like that.” Jimin replied. He was a little upset hearing his boss mention the thoughts on Taehyung and Jungkook staying for two earth years in space. The thought alone just gave Jimin a sudden jolt of anger to the point where he nearly rose the tone to his voice on the head Chief of the facility.

“Those are possibilities. They'll live through the two years.” Chief Wu mentioned and at that moment, Jimin was panicking inside. What if he just gave out his plan through those simple words? “T-That's if they spend two years up there.”

“Why precisely two years?” Jimin thought to himself. His own thoughts silenced himself while he hugged his own body. The atmosphere around them grew cold and all Jimin felt at that moment was fear.

“Are you okay?” Called the elder and right there, Jimin faked a smile and nodded his head. Jimin was scared, but he was smart in any situation. It was no rocket science that the elder had something planned and the thought of it scared Jimin. He was able to catch on very quickly. But, what did he hide? Jimin had no idea Chief Wu had access to the B248, all Jimin thought was the fact that the elder planned on leaving Jungkook and Taehyung in space for a year. This alone gave Jimin an idea as to why he was left in space for a year and having it seen as a mistake.

“Yes, I'm okay...I just had a little panic right there… I haven't seen Jungkook all day. That's why.” Jimin mentioned and let out a sigh. “You know… Two years does sound like it could benefit us. However, I don't think it's a wise decision. I barely lived for a year up there. Space isn't just another earth. It's deadly.” Jimin continued to infer while the elder seemed less scary now. But the two year plan of having Jungkook and Taehyung left in space, scared Jimin to the bone.

“I could see why you would panic like that. Jungkook and you are very close. But either way, look at it in an unbiased way. You'd agree wouldn't you? Ah, but it won't happen anyways. Their mission is to find the B248 and fix it. How could you remember everything anyway?”

“I remember the order it's in. No need to forget. I've written it down many times as well.” Jimin claimed and from afar, he could see the house. “J-Just up ahead.”

“I know that already. Listen Jimin, don't mention what we talked about here. The whole idea of two years sounds absurd. I don't want you linking that to me. As the head Chief, I'm not supposed to add in anything that could compromise the mission at hand.” The Chief spoke again in his dull and cold, brittle voice. Just then, they approached the house and before Jimin could get out, the Chief locked Jimin in the car and rose a brow; tilting his own head followed after.

               “C-Chief… The door…”

“Say you won't mention it to anyone. Leave this conversation in here and keep it concealed to the facility. Do I make myself clear, Dr. Park?”

“Y-Yes, Sir…” Jimin answered. With the glare peering through the glance of the older, Jimin was finally let go. He longed to hear the click of the lock become undone and with that, Jimin opened the door to leave. “Thank you again, Chief Wu.” Thanked the man with a bow and after that, he closed the door behind him and walked off. Each time he glanced back, his eyes fell onto the black car and the shadow of his boss sitting there, watching over Jimin until he reached the inside of the house. It felt like an endless walk to the front door with Chief Wu's pair of eyes following Jimin everywhere.

Jimin finally pulled the door open and stepped inside the house before quickly bringing it shut. He kicked his shoes off right at the entrance and glanced out the peephole of the door. “Why...is he still there? He's scaring the shit out of me…” Jimin said to himself until…. He felt a hand grab him by the shoulder and turn him around against the door so suddenly. Right before him, Namjoon stood with his arms folded and his gaze shaking in worry once it fell down Jimin's frame. “Namjoon!”

“Where were you? I came to check up on you and all I get is the door left open! I was worried, do you know what Galileo would do to me if you were gone? He'd send me to the stars itself! What were you doing outside at this hour?” Namjoon questioned desperately. The older man wore a robe over his black, matching, pajamas and white socks just under his olive slides. In his hands, he carried the keys to his own car while he kept his arms folded and hair brushed off to the side.

“I… I couldn't hold back. I wanted to see Jungkook.” Jimin confessed and right there, Namjoon tilted his head aside to look out the window and catch a black car finally driving off. “We talked for a while and then… Chief Wu gave me a ride home. But it's weird since he never gives his employees any rides home.” Jimin told Namjoon about the boss and thought back at how odd he acted towards him during the whole ride. “He also… Told me not to mention what we talked about in the car…”

“Well? Are you going to tell me, Jeon Jimin?” Namjoon teased and walked over to the couch to drop down and glance over at Jimin. “Tell me… I'm listening.” With that being said, Jimin took one glance out the window before sitting across from Namjoon and nodding his head.

“He told me it stays in the car, but it's obvious I'm not so stupid to keep it a secret… I think, the Chief has plans on keeping Jungkook and Taehyung locked up there. I don't know how, but that scares me enough to believe that something is going on…” Jimin mentioned. Making Namjoon tilt his head and sit up. He processed what Jimin said and only then, he knew there had to be something hidden behind Jimin's expedition that took up a whole year prior to Taehyung and Jungkook's mission.
