Chapter 2: The red light
Piercing loud sirens filled the lab once Jungkook threw his hand down on the emergency button after he spotted something unusual on the earth's radar. Just moments after, the supervisor rushed in. It was an elder by the name of Mr. Park; dashing in with a black and white suit. The elder dressed formal for the visitors in the lab for the day and wanted to look presentable to represent his unit.
“Mr. Jeon, what is it?” Asked the older man as he glanced at the earth's radar in which, Jungkook was quick to point at.
“There's a rocket! A rocket and it looks like it's ours…” Jungkook told his supervisor and kept staring at the flashing red light. With that, another astronomer pulled up the view of the earth's radar onto a big screen where everyone else could see it. Alas, Jungkook didn't know what was so special about the red blinking light. “M-Mr. Park.. What does it mean?” Jungkook asked and pointed his attention to the big screen where his colleagues began to cheer and smile at each other. Being Jungkook; the boy who just joined earlier this year, was just as confused as the next guy.
“You're coming home…” Mr. Park whispered as a tear rushed down his eyes at the sight of the red blinking light. “...After all this time.. You're back…” The man spoke to himself under all the noise of other astronomers cheering. “REQUEST A RESCUE MISSION! NOW! Let the commander know. My boy is coming back.” Mr. Park demanded as another man ran off to tell the commander so a rescue mission could be conducted. Of course, this mission would have to be taken quickly since only a few minutes on earth could be days on space, one year in space could even equal to ten years or so! So, it was important to do the rescue mission as soon as possible.
Jungkook watched how others celebrated and he felt a bit good about himself. However, all he caught was the fact that ‘he was coming back' this made Jungkook think that maybe his spot was just a replacement. The astronomer tried not to get caught up at the fact that he could lose his job, but he was rather excited. He was proud he could find something in the thrill of the moment. Jungkook was then rushing through the crowds of astronomers and met up with his two close friends that were sitting at the station. Taehyung however, didn't seem excited as he kept working and Namjoon was just begging to be set free.
“Taehyung! We need to celebrate! Rocket B248 was found! Jungkook found him!”
“And I wish he didn't… Hold still, I'm calculating right now.” Taehyung bickered. It was unclear as to what Taehyung meant. He would be such a happy, yet serious individual at times and something like this came to no surprise to Namjoon.
“Come on, darling~” Namjoon joked around and hugged the younger over his lap. “I'm serious… At least act happy! Mr. Park is finally going to see his son after so long… Aren't you proud?”
“I prayed for an asteroid to hit the B248… But I guess miracles can't happen. Ugh!… Why did he take that stupid task for-” Taehyung continued and before he could say something else, Jungkook interrupted.
“Hey, guys! Bite my dust, I discovered something great!” Jungkook gloated and with that, Taehyung was quick to switch into a smile and jumped off Namjoon's lap. “So thank you, but no thank you! I'm conducting my own ship and that's the Jeon 97!” Jungkook concluded and made Taehyung laugh out of nowhere. Of course, Namjoon was well aware of why Taehyung behaved like this towards the boy.
“As if! You only discovered the rocket we own! You didn't discover much. Come back to me when you discover a galaxy or even a planet!” Taehyung said with a laugh as Jungkook folded his arms and stepped forward to look at Namjoon.
“Namjoon, aren't you excited?! I found a rocket… I guess that's what everyone is talking about. These nerds must've missed their rocket.” Jungkook laughed. However, that wasn't the real reason as to why everyone celebrated the discovery of Rocket-B248-C12.
“It's not about the rocket, Nicolaus Copernicus! It's what's in the rocket!” Namjoon told the young astronomer as Taehyung then turned away from the two and fixed his glasses over his eyes.
“It's so hot in here… Is it hot in here? It's hot in here…” Taehyung sputtered and gulped after.
“No… It's very cold in here, what about you, Namjoon?” Jungkook asked and looked at Namjoon to see that the older man kept his gaze at Taehyung as if he wanted him to have some compassion to the situation.
“O-Of course he could feel it…” Taehyung spoke out again and faced Jungkook before making a smile to the younger boy. “I'll… I'll just go get something to drink… I'll be fine.” Assured the other as he then walked off before Jungkook could get his questioned answered. But of course, Jungkook was no stranger to this type of behavior at all.
“Is he just jealous I found something or…?” Jungkook asked as he looked over at Namjoon.
“Don't pay him any mind. He just likes you.” Namjoon teased and made Jungkook laugh. “So, the B248 isn't the important thing everyone is celebrating. It's what's inside. And what's inside, is the astronaut Dr. Park Jimin. He's very intelligent. He was such a good friend to the both of us! Jimin took on this mission one year ago and was in space for a long time. But, along the way, he was lost and everyone thought he was dead. That's why you came in and he was replaced.” Namjoon told the young man as Jungkook took a moment to think about this. Surely, the name echoed in a right tone to his mind and he smiled sitting down to listen and hear more about the astronaut.
“T-Tell me more about him! I want to know everything! I don't know why no one has ever told me about Jimin sooner! Is he the son of the supervisor?” Jungkook asked excitedly as Namjoon discovered a bright gleam to the boy's eyes; almost like the boy found a falling star and was blown away by it completely.
“Well, there's nothing much I can say. He was friends with Taehyung and I, such a nice and happy man, intelligent and cute. Of course, he was just like you. Gets easily frustrated when he couldn't find something great… Even if he was just an astronaut, he still loved working with astronomy. Ah, if he is up there and not just his corpse...I bet the two of you would make such great friends. Here.. I think I have a picture of him from last year.” Namjoon said as he then pulled his cabinet out and lifted the many pages hiding two pictures printed.
“Why do you have these?” Jungkook asked as Namjoon handed over the photos to the young boy.
“Because, when he was lost along with the connection, we thought something terrible happened to him, so I kept these photos of him to remember him by.” Namjoon responded. Jungkook held the photos in his hands as his eyes danced along every little corner of the page, every little detail and every little smile Jimin made. It was at that moment, Jungkook felt like time stopped, the stars aligned and the moon was at its highest peak. Underneath the moonlight, was where he discovered the true star of his life. Jungkook was happy, no.. He was excited to know about the boy in the stars and couldn't wait to meet him. Jungkook quickly shot his gaze up to the older and couldn't stop smiling and held the pictures close.
“C-Can I keep it? I'd love to write something about him! I could even write a biography or something about his experience! Once he gets here, I can ask him so many questions. I-”
“Jungkook, Slow down there! If he does turn up to be alive, he'll be very weak to tend to all of your questions. It could take months for him to finally learn how to walk again.” Namjoon assured the boy and watched how Jungkook tilted his head and smiled at the pictures he held of the astronaut. “You know… You should keep those for your biography on Park Jimin. I think he'll be flattered you'll write something about his expedition on the B-two forty-eight.” As soon as the man told this to the young stargazer, Jungkook quickly jumped up happily and couldn't dare to peel his eyes off the pictures of Park Jimin.
“Thank you! I'll do more research on him. It could be weeks or months for him to finally come back.” Jungkook told Namjoon and the married man before him just couldn't help the fact that he noticed Jungkook was more passionate about recording the life of the astronaut. Something way more different than astronomy; which always floated around on his head daily. Just this time, his thoughts fell from the stars and down onto the pictures he held. Thinking it would be such an amazing thing to hear more about the stars from an astronaut that spent an earth year in space.
After work, Jungkook rushed into his humble home. Of course, he lived alone since he didn't want to live with his girlfriend until they married and had the blessings of their parents. Until then, Jungkook stayed alone in his small house that consisted of a wide kitchen to cook meals in, a bathroom, two bedrooms; one was for Jungkook and one was his office with a telescope pointing out the window to stargaze, notes, books on astronomy and guides to Galileo; a famous astronomer Jungkook and many others looked up to. Even to Isaac Newton or Nicolaus Copernicus. The list went on. The living room however, had a dark blue carpet, a baby blue desk, white couches and a flat-screen TV sitting over a television stand with a video game console, movies, even more books and a notebook Jungkook kept for his ideas or plans.
The boy soon arrived home, still carrying the pictures in his hands and finally set them down onto the table that night to take another look at the astronaut travelling around with the B248 in space. “Ah, Jimin… You're so lucky! And oddly cute too…” Jungkook said and let out a chuckle. “I can't wait to be your friend. We could even be brothers!” Jungkook said, staring at the picture for a good while. “Maybe… Not brothers?..no brothers…” Jungkook spoke to himself and then took a good moment before picking up the two pictures and rushing to his office in the extra room. By there, Jungkook opened the door to the room filled with posters of astronauts, pictures of Jungkook himself taking pictures with current astronauts at the facility and pictures of skies. Jungkook then pinned up the pictures of Jimin he had onto the wall with all the other astronauts.
“You're going to the wall of astronauts… We haven't met, but I know we'll be great friends. I know it…” Jungkook told himself in the room that was painted black with small white dots and glowing stars on every spot of the wall. There was even small lights hiding under carved stars hanging by a string in his astronomy room. All of this just to resemble space. Again, the boy was in love with the stars and was eager to meet astronauts who actually ventured off to meet with the many stars shining down on the earth. Jungkook pictured space as a silent and calm place where he'd always think of to escape stress or anything else. He was proud of his little room he worked on for so long just to stand in it and feel like he truly was in space.
A red light, a rocket with the label of B248, and a cute astronaut by the name of Dr. Park Jimin. Those three things lingered on in Jungkook's head and that was the best discovery he could ever find that very special day. Even if he didn't change the law of any theories out there, he felt like he was at the very start of an amazing expedition to the stars; that he could barely reach… Or could he? Was the true star he always looked up in the skies for, lied before him on those two little pictures of the astronaut in the B248?
