They eventually got back to Aggie's house, where Marnie and Maisie immediately started up on the Witch's Brew.
After Marnie dumped in the ghost sweat and Maisie stirred the potion thrice, Marnie carried the small cauldron to the table.
"All right, here it is," Marnie said. "Vampire fang, ghost sweat, werewolf hair à la mode."
Maisie poured the potion into the talisman and screwed the cap on.
All that was left was the spell...
Maisie looked at Marnie, hoping she remembered it.
Marnie looked back at her, as if she was hoping that Maisie remembered the spell.
"What are you both waiting for?" asked Dylan.
"I can't remember Grandma's spell," Marnie admitted.
"What do you remember you can't remember?" asked Dylan.
"It was Old English or Welsh or something," Marnie said. "I mean, give me a break, I have trouble remembering Agua."
"The most I remember is Bet y March, Bet y Guythur," Maisie admitted. "The rest I can't remember because it sounded like gibberish to me."
Marnie looked at the talisman, "Betty March, Betty Gunther. Betty Gugginheim is all that's bid?" Marnie tried again. Even Sophie cringed at that. "Okay, better march. Better get there. Better get going, before there's no more beds."
"Why didn't you write it down or something?" whined Dylan.
Maisie asked Dylan, "Why didn't you write it down?"
Sophie started muttering under her breath, making Maisie and Marnie looked at her.
Marnie asked Sophie, "What is it, Soph?"
Sophie spoke a little louder, "Bet y March, Bet y Guythur, Bet y Gugaun, Cledyfrutm Anoeth Bid."
Maisie smiled at Sophie, "That's it. That's the rest of the spell. How did you remember it?"
"It sounded pretty, so I made up a song for it," Sophie explained. "Bet y March, Bet y Guythur. I like making up songs."
That she did. Maisie remembered the 'Bathtub Song' Sophie used to sing when she was four. Maisie found it a little disheartening to know that a seven-year-old was more of a witch than her.
"You know," Marnie started. "Grandma says spells are stronger together when you have more than one witch. You wanna help us, Sophie?"
"Okay," Sophie replied.
Maisie and Marnie grabbed a hold of the talisman, while Sophie said the spell, Maisie and Marnie repeated it back, trying to say it together.
It, obviously, didn't work.
"Great, it's not working," Dylan complained.
"Your pessimistic attitude isn't helping much," Maisie replied.
"Grandma says that spells are simple," Marnie pointed out. "You want something, then let yourself have it."
She let Sophie grab a hold of the talisman and Maisie grabbed the bottom. She closed her eyes.
Together, the three girls said in unison, "Bet y March, Bet y Guythur, Bet y Gugaun, Cledyfrutm Anoeth Bid."
There was a flash of light and Maisie opened her eyes, seeing the talisman lit up. It even stayed on.
"You did it you guys," Dylan said, sounding surprised.
"I did it," Marnie said, sounding surprised. "We did it. We're witches." She hugged her two sisters.
"You can celebrate later," Dylan interrupted. "C'mon, let's get out of here."
They went to leave the house, but Marnie doubled back to put on Aggie's red cloak.
They headed back to town and to the movie theater.
Maisie propped open the back door to keep the Evil Warlock from making another grand appearance, because he hated sunlight.
Maisie looked at the theater screen, which showed a black hole with gray clouds swirling around. It gave her the shivers, because how can evil feel so dark and cold?
No wonder the Evil Warlock hated sunlight.
Sophie asked, "Are they going to be okay?" She got in the seat next to Gwen.
Marnie and Dylan listened to Aggie and Gwen's heartbeats.
"I think so," Marnie said. "I can hear her heart beating."
"Grandma too," Dylan replied.
"It's a Freezing Spell," Maisie said, keeping an eye on the theater screen. "It just turns them into statues. I think the Evil Warlock wants to turn them into servants, considering how he said that when Grandma wakes up, he'll be her master."
The screen emitted a rumbling sound.
"It's the bad thing," Sophie said ominously.
Maisie turned to watch as Dylan took the talisman from Marnie and waved in front of Gwen's face, then Aggie's. Dylan smacked the talisman, "Work, you dumb thing, work." He looked at Marnie and Maisie, "Why isn't it working?"
"I don't know," Marnie said, taking the talisman. "Grandma said something about installing it."
"What?" Dylan asked, "Installing it? Installing it where?"
Maisie looked at Aggie, and how she was pointing at the door. She remembered the Halloweentown book and how the jack 'o lantern was lit up when it was dark. At least in the book. "Mortal see, mortal do."
Dylan asked her, "What?"
"Grandma said something about our traditions are an imitation of theirs," Maisie said.
"What about it?" asked Dylan.
Marnie caught on, "When it's dark on Halloween, where do you put the candle?"
"In the jack 'o lantern," Maisie finished.
They headed outside and towards the town square where the statue was.
Maisie wondered if it was just her imagination, but it looked like the statue was on fire.
"You can't be serious," Dylan said. "You're not seriously thinking about going into that thing, are you?"
"One of us has to," Maisie said. "It's the only way we can get Mom and Grandma back."
"But what are we going to do?" asked Dylan.
"Be on standby in case something goes wrong, and you can jump in and save our sorry butts," Maisie told Dylan.
Marnie nudged Maisie, "What she means is wish us luck."
"Good luck," Sophie told her older sisters.
Marnie smiled at them, handed Maisie the talisman and pulled up the hood on the cloak. They headed off together.
"Good luck," Dylan told them.
Marnie and Maisie turned the corner, when someone grabbed their shoulders and pulled them into the wall.
"Marnie, Maisie, it's a trap."
It was Luke.
"He's waiting for you both," Luke continued telling them.
Maisie felt angry at Luke, because if it wasn't for him, Aggie and Gwen wouldn't have fallen victim to the Freezing Spell.
"Outta our way, Luke," Marnie snarled at him, also radiating anger.
Luke said, "Look, about what happened earlier, I swear I didn't know he was gonna do that to your mom and grandma." The thing was, he seemed sincere in his apology.
"Save your tricks, twerp, okay?" Marnie said, "My sister and I are busy." She tried to push past him, but Luke got in Marnie's way.
"No, I swear," Luke replied. "He said all he wanted was the talisman and he'd let your grandma go."
Marnie clearly didn't want to hear it, "I said get out of my way."
Maisie asked, "What about our mother? How come he'd let our grandmother go but not our mother?"
Luke didn't get to answer, because the dark and evil feeling crept in, along with the wind. Dark clouds rolled across the sky above City Hall.
Where was the mayor when you need him?
