The Halloween Townies had looked at Maisie like she was the freak after she got pulled through the locker.

"Marnie, Maisie, you both should know that things aren't always what they seem," Aggie told them.

Maisie looked around the room, which honestly looked cozy. If only the floor was carpeted... She noticed how Ethan and Cassie were sitting together at a table. Maybe Ethan had a crush on Cassie.

"Hmm," Marnie said. "This is way better than a teachers' lounge."

"It's kind of to echo-y," Maisie replied.

"Can I please take this off now?" asked Chester, grabbing at his hair.

"Oh, yes, of course, dear," Aggie told him. "You're perfectly safe in here." She looked at the others, "Oh, and if anyone else wants to unzip, it's okay."

"Oh, it's about time," a boy said.

"Oh, finally," a girl said.

One by one, the Crew started taking off their human disguises.

One of the girls was a fairy or pixie.

"Oh, no," Marnie said. "Things are definitely not what they seem."

The only one who wasn't wearing a human disguise was Ethan, so chances were that he was a warlock.

Chester was fanning himself with both hands, "How much longer do I have to wear this stupid human suit?"

"To humans, none of you exist," Maisie pointed out.

"Hopefully, over time, we change all that," Marnie added.

There was an obnoxious banging sound coming from somewhere. Maisie looked up at the ceiling like everyone else was doing.

"I think it's coming from the locker door," Maisie pointed out. It sounded like metal was hitting metal. She had the paranoid thought that it was a knight, but the Knights were make-believe. Right?

"Don't worry about it, dear," Aggie told Maisie. "It's probably just the pipes. My magic hasn't set yet."

"Oh, that's it," replied the crew.

"I'm already starting to make new friends," Cassie said to another girl. "These two cheerleaders walked past me and said, 'what are you looking at, freak?' Isn't that sweet? They actually thought I was a freak. It was so great."

"Oh, when they pass out mice in biology, you're apparently not supposed to eat them. But," Chester said to Ethan and two other boys. There was a pause, like they were waiting for the punchline of a joke. "I had three." They laughed.

Natalie said, "Everyone keeps saying 'hey, what's up?' What's up where?"

"Yeah, I heard that too," a boy told Natalie.

It seemed like things were good for their first day at mortal school.

Marnie seemed to be wearing a grin throughout the evening.

Maisie was helping with Gwen with the laundry, while Sophie was busy playing with Wednesday and Dylan was busy doing homework on the couch. Marnie flopped down backwards onto the couch next to Dylan.

"I really wish you could've been there," Marnie said. "Today was, like, the greatest day of my whole life. Everything went so perfectly."

"Except for Chester eating three mice from biology," Maisie muttered under her breath.

"Except for that," Marnie said. "But I really think this is gonna work."

Gwen asked, "Was there ever any doubt?"

"From the council, yes," Maisie replied, trying to mask her own doubt that she had.

Sophie gave Maisie a look, because she knew Maisie doubted it.

"Well, Marnie had an idea, and she followed it through," Gwen said. She spoke to Marnie, "I'm so proud of you."

"I just hope that someday, I won't feel like I'm leading separate lives," Marnie said. "You know that I'm two separate people."

"Both of them equally annoying," Dylan replied.

Marnie made at Dylan and closed his textbook.

Aggie walked in, "Oh, do any of you have any unicorn milk? It helps my digestion."

"I think there's some in the back of the fridge," Gwen told Aggie. "Oh, I'll help you. Mai, you finish up the laundry."

"Oh, I didn't tell you the best part," Marnie said. "I met a boy. He's new. And I think he likes me."

Maisie made a face, because it must be nice having someone like you. She realized that Marnie was looking at her, like she was waiting for Maisie to confirm it, "Hey, you're on your own."

"Snag him before he has the chance to meet anyone else," Dylan replied.

"And make sure he's the mortal kind of freaky, because this family will surely scare him off if he's normal," Maisie added. She and Dylan started laughing at that.

Gwen and Sophie went into the kitchen together.

Marnie snapped her fingers twice, making Dylan float to the ceiling and the second snap was to make the pile of laundry to explode in a cool geyser effect to make the clothing spill everywhere so Maisie would have to clean it up.

Maisie yelled, "That was rude!" She had no problem using magic, so she did a spell to call the clothing back to her and then to fold themselves, before she went into the kitchen.

"Hey, Mai, a little help?" yelled Dylan.

"You have magic, get down yourself," Maisie replied.

Gwen, Aggie, Sophie, and Marnie were gathered around Aggie's Witch's Glass.

"The first day was amazing," Marnie was telling someone. "Ethan and the kids are already settling into human life."

"Well, I'm not worried about my son," Council President Dalloway said. "You know, he's such a little go-getter. I'm thrilled to know everything's going so well."

"Yup," replied Marnie. "We won't let you down."

"It's not me I'm worried about, dear," Dalloway said. "It's you and your magic. Have there been any signs of danger?"

Maisie was frowning, because that was a little weird question to ask. Maybe he's just worried about his son, but why would he ask about danger? The Knights were a make-believe story, right?

"Oh, no, no, none whatsoever," Aggie said.

"Good," Dalloway replied. "Well, just remember: the hopes of all of Halloweentown are on you."

"Thanks for the unnecessary reminder," Maisie muttered.

Sophie asked, "What's wrong, Marnie?"

"I never knew the weight of the world could be so heavy," Marnie replied and chuckled awkwardly.

"Don't worry," Gwen told Marnie, "We're gonna help you carry it."

Cassie and another boy, Maisie was sure his name was Pete, walked through the door. Cassie asked, "What did he mean by danger?"

"Was he talking about the Knights?" asked Pete.

Maisie noticed Ethan coming through the portal and he closed the door. She wasn't surprised that Ethan went after Cassie.

"Uh, yes," Marnie replied. "But you have nothing to worry about because they aren't any Knights."

"How do we know that they're really gone?" asked Ethan.

"Yeah," replied Pete.

"It's been over a thousand years," Marnie pointed out. "I mean, we're pretty sure they don't exist."

Maisie knew that they had to reassure the Boo Crew, because if they get a little scared, they might back out of the program, which was no good for the Cromwell magic.

She cursed Dalloway for putting in that nugget of paranoia. And she cursed Ethan because he was standing there, wearing a tie that made her want to grab and pull him in to kiss him.

Natalia, being her oddly adorable pink troll self, came through, "You mean, like we don't exist?"

Marnie and Gwen made weird facial expressions at that. Then Gwen turned to Maisie, "Uh, did you fold that laundry like I asked you to?

"Yeah," Maisie replied.

"By hand?" asked Gwen.

"No," Maisie replied. "You said to fold the laundry, but you didn't say by hand."

"You know, what? I can be okay with this," called Dylan, from his presumed position on the ceiling. "You just watch me. I'll stay up here all night."

Marnie turned the light off in the living room.
