Maisie, Aggie, and Marnie had to wait for Dylan to get Sophie so she can conjure up Aggie's bedroom door, because Dylan refused to use magic because he wanted to be normal and thus refused to learn the spell to get inside Aggie's room.

It was a bit frustrating because it would go a lot faster if he used magic, but no.

Marnie had to run off to get Luke who wandered off again. So, Maisie took the head phone from Aggie and went to follow after Marnie, who got a hold of Luke. It looked like the orange part on his jacket had gone gray too.

"We're in," Dylan said over the head phone.

"Took you long enough," Maisie retorted in the head phone.

Marnie took the head phone from Maisie and spoke into it, "Look just find the spell book, all right."

After a moment, Dylan said, "It's not here."

"What does that mean?" asked Maisie.

"It should be on the table," Marnie said.

"Well, it's not," Dylan replied.

"Last I saw it, it was on the table," Maisie replied. It had been yesterday, but still. "It couldn't have gone far."

Aggie started walking to them.

"Maybe Grandma misplaced it," Dylan replied.

Maisie asked, "How does one misplace a giant spell book?"

"She misplaced the ogre," Dylan replied.

"Stinky was just playing hide-and-seek, Dylan," Maisie replied.

"Someone must have taken it," Aggie stated. She took the head phone from Marnie and spoke into it, "Did any of you go into my room since I came down for the party?"

Maisie shook her head, "No."

"Not me," Dylan said.

"Not me," Sophie said.

Maisie could feel guilt coming from Marnie and she looked at Marnie. "Marnie?"

Aggie looked at Marnie too.

"Um, well, I was," Marnie said. "For a few minutes."

"I could actually feel your guilt all the way over here," Maisie pointed out.

"Well, did someone go in with you?" asked Aggie.

Maisie could still feel the guilt from Marnie, who spoke, "Well, just this boy I met, Kal."

Maisie could feel the shock from Aggie.

Maisie looked at Marnie, "Really?"

"But he couldn't have taken it," Marnie defended. "'Cause I was with him the whole time."

"He must be the one I felt coming," Sophie said. "He stole it, Grandma."

"It could've been somebody else," Marnie defended. "I mean," She looked at her watched, "W-we've been gone for almost an hour."

"He could've come back inside after he took off and we were distracted," Maisie said.

"Well, only you, Marnie, Grandma, and Sophie know the spell to get in," Dylan pointed out.

"Children," Aggie spoke in the head phone. "You seal my room." She looked at Marnie, "I'm going to go back and have a talk with Marnie's new friend." She walked away, leaving Marnie to feel guilt and hurt.

Maisie patted Marnie's arm and followed after Aggie.

They stopped in the square where Aggie wrung her hands together.

Marnie caught up to them and said, "He wouldn't steal anything, Grandma. He's really sweet. And Mai would've felt like he was hiding something."

"No offense, but you don't really know him all that well," Maisie pointed out. "We don't know his last name, or where he went to school. Or anything really."

"You would've felt something," Marnie pointed out.

"I just didn't want to third wheel because all I felt was attraction to you," Maisie countered. "I didn't want to hang around that. Bad enough I felt it from Mom and Alex."

"Girls, girls," Aggie started. "Perhaps he may be sweet, but for the moment, he's our only suspect." She clapped her hands and held them up.

They put their hands together and chanted, "From Halloweentown, depart we now, on this night the night of All Hallow's Eve, back into the mortal world." They motioned to an area for the portal to open up. "Through the portal we take our leave."

The portal didn't open and that was terrifying to Maisie. Were their powers draining? Was the spell taking affect?

"The portal won't open," Marnie pointed out.

"Oh, it's just as I feared," Aggie said. "Whoever cast this gray spell knew it would affect my suitcase and knew we'd come to investigate. It was a trap."

"Very good, Aggie," a familiar voice said. "You're keeping up nicely."

"Kal?" called Marnie as they looked around, trying to find the source of the voice.

"Over here," said Kal.

They turned to look, seeing his face in the cube. Or projected on the cube.

Maisie had the weird urge to take her shoe off and through it at Kal's face just to see if it would hurt him.

Chances were pretty low, but it would've made Maisie feel a lot better if she had.

"Kal?" Marnie said, "You cast the spell on Halloweentown?"

"Just the way it was written in Aggie's little spell book," Kal said. He chucked, and said to Aggie, "You naughty girl."

Maisie cringed at that.

"I knew it seemed familiar," Aggie stated.

Marnie started, "But – but then you'd have to be a w—"

"A warlock?" Kal said, "Sweet, huh?"

Marnie said, "So that whole thing – your so-called Dad, the tour of the house, it was just to get the book."

"No," replied Kal. "I could have stolen the book anytime. See, I wanted you to show it to me because you felt something between us and you did."

"You tricked me," Marnie said. Maisie felt the anger and humiliation rolling off of her.

"Ha," replied Kal. "You'll get over it. And hey, I still need a date to the costume party."

"Forget the party," Marnie said. "I wanna know why—" She paused and said, "Calabar."

"What about him?" asked Maisie confused.

"The rose," Marnie said. She seemed to be thinking about something, "I should've known when he gave me the rose."

Maisie thought about what Marnie was saying. The rose that Calabar had given her mother two years ago. And the rose that Kal had given Marnie.

"You're saying that Kal is Calabar's son?" asked Maisie. Then again, the way Calabar sounded like a disappointed parent.

"I guess I inherited my father's attraction to Cromwell witches," Kal replied.

"I didn't know Calabar had a child," Aggie replied.

"You're not the only one," Maisie replied. She still wondered how Calabar found the time to have a child since he was still hung up over Gwen. Maybe it happened in an attempt to get over Gwen?

"He didn't want people to know," Kal explained. "Dad and I didn't always agree, but he was the only one who stood in the way of the Cromwells' domination of Halloweentown."

"Oh, that's absurd," Aggie said. "The Cromwells dominate no one."

"Then why did you let the mortals take charge of the earth while we had to hide like rats in another dimension?" asked Kal.

"Oh, we all voted to create our own world so everyone could live in peace," Aggie explained.

Kal said, "And when my father tried to bring the creatures of Halloweentown back as rulers of the human race you Cromwells brought everyone against him and then you destroyed him!"

"So that's what this is about – revenge," Marnie said.

"Just say the word and I'll open up the portal," Kal said.

"And what word is that?" asked Maisie.

"Stop doing everything your mama tells you and I can show you both things that Aggie could not teach you in a million years," Kal stated.

Maisie wondered why she was involved in that statement.

Aggie laughed, because she knew that her two granddaughters wouldn't go evil.

Maisie considered agreeing to his terms, so she can find the spell and betray him instead, but chances were, he might be expecting that.

"We're not interested in your kind of magic," Marnie told Kal. "All you do is destroy."

"Oh, the gray spell is just the first act, Marnie. The finale will come at midnight in the mortal world," Kal stated.

"And what do you by finale?" asked Maisie.

"Join me and find out," Kal replied.

"No. Way," Marnie said.

"Well, you think about it, and uh..." Kal trailed off. "Catch you later." His face rippled away, leaving a giant cube behind.

Marnie spoke to Aggie, "I'm sorry, Grandma. I really blew it."

Aggie patted Marnie on the shoulder, "We all make mistakes, dear, but don't worry about it. We'll show Kal the Cromwells are not so easily beaten."

"But how?" asked Marnie. "We're trapped here and...h-he's got your spell book."

Aggie chuckled, "Well, I still have a few tricks up my sleeve." She whistled. "First we have to get back to my house." She noticed the taxicab was slowly rolling down the road, "Oh thank goodness the taxicab is still working." The taxicab stopped. "Oh, now, on the way, you can call your brother and give him an update while we find a way to break this accursed spell."

Marnie nodded, "Okay."

Marnie and Maisie went up to the taxicab and looked at the driver.

"Benny?" asked Marnie.

"Need a ride?" asked the driver.

Marnie looked at Aggie, "Uh, Grandma, I think it's Benny."
