"He's coming," Luke said, sounding concerned as what looked to be a tornado forming. Luke pushed Marnie and Maisie to hide behind a hay bale to see what was going on.
The Evil Warlock appeared on the City Hall overhang. He started addressing all of Halloweentown, "My fellow creatures! Your moment of destiny has arrived! I offer you the chance to return to our days of glory! To end this exile from the mortal world, which the humans have stolen from us! Follow me, my fellow citizens of Halloweentown! Too long have we been exiled to this second-class world! Forced to live in this, Halloweentown!"
"I have to install the talisman before it's too late," Maisie said, holding up the talisman.
"No," Luke said, sounding and radiating concern. "He'll see you and you'll end up just like the others."
"That's called a decoy," Maisie said. "It's what we do in soccer. Someone pretends to have the soccer ball to get the other school's attention, while a different girl actually has the ball to be able to score points."
"Good idea," Marnie told her.
"To celebrate the evil within us," the Evil Warlock was saying. "To reveal ourselves as we really are." He used his magic to reveal who he really was...Calabar.
"Calabar," Marnie said in shock.
"I knew he was being deceitful," Maisie said, angry at how he tricked everyone. "I felt it all along. I'm glad I never trusted him."
Luke looked at Maisie questioningly, "Felt?"
"Follow me!" yelled Calabar. "And together we will reclaim the Mortal World which is rightfully ours!"
The thing was, Luke didn't seem at all surprised by Calabar's reveal.
Maisie looked at Luke, "You knew Calabar was evil?"
"Look," Luke started. "I made an awful mistake. So, let me try and make up for it." He really seemed sincere in that. "It's our only chance."
Marnie looked at Luke and then looked at Maisie, "Mai?"
"He's being honest about wanting to try," Maisie told Marnie. Luke looked at Maisie even more confused. Maisie looked at him, "I have empathy."
Marnie told Luke and Maisie of her plan. She handed Luke the red cloak.
"But before we can be sure of success, we must find the ones who would stop us," Calabar exclaimed. "The ones who are half-human!"
Maisie felt a pang of fear at that because he was talking about her and her siblings, but she had to be brave for the plan to work.
While Luke put on the red cloak and covered himself fully with the cloak, Marnie and Maisie slipped away to head to the jack o' lantern.
Just as planned, Calabar bought the decoy, thinking that Marnie was under the cloak.
"Oh, young Cromwell," Calabar chided, delighted in spotting his prey, who continued on. He sounded amused as he spoke, "You thought you could hide from me? What? No sister?" He ordered, "Stop! Give me the talisman!" The red cloak started rushing for the jack 'o lantern statue. Calabar ordered much louder, "I said stop! Give me the talisman!"
Maisie watched in horror as Calabar lifted up from the city hall sign and down to the ground below. He pointed at the red cloak, "How dare you disobey me?" He sounded a bit like a disappointed parent, but as far as Maisie knew, he didn't have kids.
Did he?
Nah. Calabar was probably too busy plotting his evil plans to even have kids. Besides, who would Calabar have a child with?
The red cloak started heading in the opposite direction, but Calabar blasted the person in the red cloak with a spell, however the person in the red cloak stumbled, but didn't fall. So, Calabar hit the person two more with the spell, making the crowd scream, before the person in the red cloak fell to the ground, covering themselves up even more with the red cloak.
So, Maisie yelled, "No!" as dramatically as she could, before getting in front of Luke, but she also got hit with the spell a few times.
She fell to the ground and then awkwardly made eye contact with a boy around her age, who was wearing a black and white striped shirt, looking horrified.
She heard Calabar laugh evilly, before going over to uncover Luke, who said, "Fooled ya!" before he froze.
She looked at Calabar in defiance and said, "Cromwells for life." before freezing.
How embarrassing was it for two kids to lie in the town square frozen?
Then she could move again and realized her arm was draped over Luke, and she shoved him away from her in disgust and embarrassment.
The crowd cheered as light and warmth filled Halloweentown once again.
"You did it!" cheered Sophie as she and Dylan ran up to Marnie.
Maisie ran over to them, but there was only one thing left...
What was the Halloweentown equivalent of jail?
"Good going," Dylan told Marnie. "Looks like you got more than the weird part down."
Gwen and Aggie came up to them, hugging them.
"Oh, thank goodness you're okay," Gwen told them.
"Oh, you've got all the power of the Cromwells and twice the guts," Aggie told Marnie.
"It was Calabar all along," Maisie told Gwen and Aggie.
"What?" asked Gwen.
Calabar was still on the ground, seething at losing.
The crowd parted to make room for Aggie and Calabar could look at each other.
Aggie pointed at Calabar, "So it was you."
Gwen stepped forward and demanded, "Why Calabar?"
Calabar pointed at Gwen, "You could've had me."
Scratch that, there was no way this man had kids since he was so hung up on Gwen.
Calabar continued his ranting, "You could've had me. The most powerful warlock of all. You could have ruled with me. As my queen, but you chose a human instead."
"Well, it turns out that she's a pretty good judge of character," Marnie said, coming up to stand beside Gwen. She crossed her arms.
Maisie went to stand next to Marnie, "And dude, seriously, you need to get a life."
"Your days of rule are at an end, Calabar," Aggie said.
Calabar waved a finger at Aggie, "Do not underestimate me, Agatha." He did a hand motion, and the talisman flew out of the statue and into his hand, and he laughed. "Now my darkness will spread unchecked, and I will be ruler of both worlds!" He laughed again.
Agatha took something out of her sleeve and held it up and started shaking it. She started saying a spell, "Dictu jubentis vivida..."
Gwen went forward, took Aggie's hand and they spoke at the same time, "Upitidas, repelle, quod cupidinis ciente vi nos impetit!"
"Don't waste your energies, witches!" Calabar exclaimed, holding up the talisman. "Your precious talisman is no more!"
"Man, that jerk," Dylan said. "I'd like to...I'd like to..." He didn't seem to notice that his fingers were emitting blue sparks.
"Dylan, your fingers," Maisie pointed out.
"Looks like we added another witch to the family," Marnie added. "Or should I say, warlock."
Dylan held up his hands, looking at his fingers, "No way. I don't have powers. I'm the normal one in this family."
"Normal is overrated," Maisie told Dylan.
Marnie stepped forward, "Hey, Chocolate Bar! You better give that talisman back or you're in big trouble!"
"You half-human brat," Calabar said. "Do you think your magic is any match for mine?"
Maisie went to stand next to Marnie and Sophie stood next to Maisie, with Dylan at the end.
"Hm, no," Marnie said. "But let's see. My powers, and my mom's, and my grandmother's, and my sisters', and my brother's might do it." She looked at her family, "Hit it, guys."
They linked hands and stared humming, excluding Dylan who crossed his arms, still in denial over having magic.
"Silly witches!" called Calabar, laughing. "You Cromwells have failed!"
Maisie opened her eyes and looked at Dylan, "Dylan. Join in. We need you."
"Believe," Marnie urged Dylan.
"Just for once in your life, believe in the impossible," Maisie told Dylan.
Sophie held out her hand and Dylan reluctantly took it and closed his eyes.
The light in the talisman grew brighter.
"No, no!" screamed Calabar. He let out a last, "No!" before he was vanquished. The talisman floated in the air and shoot straight into Aggie's hand.
The crowd, who stood around to watch, cheered as Gwen yelled, "The talisman!" The family hugged each other.
Aggie went to the pumpkin to reinstall the light while Gwen hugged each of her kids.
"Oh, I'm so proud of you," Gwen said.
Marnie started, "Mom?"
"Yes, sweetheart?" replied Gwen.
"You were right," Marnie said. "There was a lot about Halloweentown that we - we didn't understand."
"Yeah," Maisie agreed.
"And I'm sorry about the things I said and did," Marnie said.
"Me too," Maisie replied.
"And I'm sorry that I didn't trust you both," Gwen said. "You are everything I ever could have hoped for in daughters and so much more." She hugged both girls.
"Oh my." Aggie spoke to Gwen, "You've got quite a coven here, my dear."
"Yeah, and I thought they were a handful before," Gwen said.
"Hey, it wasn't me." Dylan told them. "That stuff coming outta my fingertips was probably just static electricity. Or maybe that Aurora Borealis thing I was reading about."
"Just accept that you're different," Maisie said with an eyeroll. "You'll accept magic one day."
"I forgot about Luke," Marnie said and ran off to go find him.
"Ten bucks she kisses him," Maisie said to Gwen.
"You're on," Gwen replied.
They watched as Luke and Marnie talked to each other before they got ready to board the bus.
Maisie laughed when Marnie kissed Luke on the cheek, "Ha!"
Gwen slapped down a ten on Maisie's hand and pointed at Aggie, Dylan, and Sophie, "Don't tell Marnie about that."
Aggie went over to Marnie and Luke to talk to Luke about something.
They came to the bus to the mortal world, where Halloweentown residents clapped and cheered for them.
"Well, I suppose I'll have to give the children back now," Aggie told Gwen.
Gwen said, "You know, Mother...I have to admit, you're really good with them."
Aggie seemed surprised by the compliment, "Thank you."
"You know," Gwen continued, "I was thinking, I could use a babysitter on Thursday nights. You know, my PTA meetings sometimes they go on forever. And sometimes it's troublesome wrangling Maisie's soccer team when we go out for pizza, that I could use an extra hand."
"You know dear I can't cross over," Aggie said apologetically. "Only one Halloween nights."
Maisie didn't understand why Gwen had to get their hopes up like that.
Gwen hummed, like she was thinking, "Well then, I guess you're just gonna have to come live with us." Marnie gasped in excitement. Gwen continued speaking to Aggie, "That is, if you want to."
"Grandma's gonna come live with us?" Marnie said, "Oh, that'll be so cool."
"We can show you all our books," Maisie said. "The girls on the soccer team are going to love you."
"And Mai and I have all the Frankenstein movies on video," Marnie added.
"And you can show us how to fly–" Maisie started but stopped. "Did we even get those brooms?"
Marnie said, "Oh no!" She looked around frantically, "Where are they?"
"Oh, don't panic, dear. Don't panic." Aggie said. She let out a loud whistle and her suitcase moved over to her, making Marnie gasp. "Yes. Follows me everywhere." Marnie picked up the suitcase. "Open it up, open it up, open."
Marnie opened the suitcase and took out her broom, "My broom!"
Maisie took out the metallic blue Dragonfly.
"I thought we could continue your studies," Aggie told them.
"Yes," Marnie whispered as she and Maisie headed for the bus.
"Uh, no," Gwen said, taking Marnie's broom and then Maisie's.
"What?" asked Maisie.
"I'm gonna be finishing your training," Gwen told them.
Marnie hugged her instead.
Luke, who was going to be the bus conductor, rang the bell on the bus, "All abroad for the mortal world."
Maisie wondered if he had any experience on being a bus conductor, because it was strange to be allowing him to drive a bus as she sat down in a seat and waved bye to all of Halloweentown as her family sat down in seats too.
But then again, this was Halloweentown. It wasn't your average town.
