The Lady Out of Time || Prologue

HELLO EVERYONE! I have been so excited to write this book since I began Let Me Be a Part of the Narrative! If you're a newcomer to the series, you don't have to read that book to understand this one, but it might be nice to see some of what my altered reality started out as. Anyway, thank you for reading!

Disclaimer: I own none of the characters you recognize from Hamilton, as I am not Lin Manuel Miranda.

Margaret Scott knew who she was from the day she turned 12. The day was crystal clear in her mind, as we're the memories she had gained that day. Those happy memories of staying up late with her sisters against their fathers wishes, sneaking downtown during the war, talking about love... All of those wonderful memories returned that day. She had told her now family when she realized what she really was.

A reincarnation.

Margaret let herself be pulled into a flashback of that day.

This was probably the most nervous she had been in her life. Well, except for when she had met-nope! She wasn't thinking about him today. That was dangerous territory. Today wouldn't be the day she uncovered that part of her past. No, today was the day she would tell her now family everything. It had been a week since she had her revelation, and a week since her birthday. She had taken the time to get her memories straight for them. Everything was put into place.

Margaret paced the length of the living room. Her now family wasn't rich by any means, but they certainly had more than enough money. "Mom! Dad! Kayla! Can you guys get down here? We need to have a family meeting!"

Now, Margaret hadn't called for a family meeting ever, her voice sounded incredibly serious, and she was twelve, so there were tons of red flags there. Her now family all ran into the room. She was the baby of the family, seeing as Kayla was 17, and everyone was protective of the baby!

"What is it, honey?" Her now mother had asked, voice full of worry. Inwardly she had laughed at the fact that her calling a family meeting was the most worrying thing about her. Knowing her past, Margaret knew that things were about to get a lot more complicated.

Margaret took a deep breath. "I'm a reincarnation." Her now family had been speechless, and she couldn't blame them. This was a huge revelation. She decided she had to elaborate. "I'm a reincarnation of Margarita Schuyler. You might recognize Peggy Schuyler better. One of my sisters married Alexander Hamilton?" She tried, hoping that she would be recognized. Her now family only nodded. Great. They probably knew nothing!

"I guess I should tell you everything." Peggy said that, but she didn't truly do that. Sure she told of the basics of how she lived, her then family, some things she saw fit for her now family to know, but she left out her death, the pain she felt as Alexander became such a big part of their lives, and...her first love. Even in her thoughts she couldn't say his name, for fear of breaking into tears. They were pulled apart too soon, and this cruel world would never let them be together again.

The Scott household had changed that day. Kayla actively avoided Peggy, always told her friends they would have to go somewhere other than their home, and would never look her in the eye when talking to her, if they even talked. Peggy's now parents always acted as if she would explode at the slightest talk about the past, or the mention of reincarnation. They respected her wishes to be called Peggy, but always introduced her as Margaret. It was disrespectful, but Peggy had no place in telling them that. She had intruded into their lives when all they asked for was a normal young girl.

It was a wonder, Peggy thought, that her now parents had agreed to send her off to college. Somehow, she had gotten into Columbia University, planning to major in graphic design. It was still a relativly new major, so Peggy imagined there weren't too many people in it. Still, she enjoyed art and wanted to follow it as a career.

Staring up at the building she would be staying in, Peggy wished for just a moment that she had asked Kayla to help her lug her stuff to her room. Whatever, she thought, I'm a Schuyler sister; I can handle anything this place throws at me. With that thought in mind, she began to pull her suitcase inside.

Turns out, pulling an oversized suitcase to room 178 was harder than it looked. Peggy barely made it to the hall before having to pull her case to the side so she could rest. Seriously, couldn't the human race invent some sort of machine to carry it for her?

Peggy's breath must've been louder than she heard, because a man approached her, worry written all over his face. "Sorry to bother you, but are you alright?" The guy asked, dark eyes searching her. She didn't like that feeling, as from a young age in her previous life she had been told to keep quiet and to herself.

"Fine, I just..." The youngest Schuyler sister motioned to her suitcase. "I'm a little winded from carrying this here." The man nodded, probably having carried his own luggage to his room.

"I can help you if you want." he asks, and Peggy almost agrees with no question. The thought of having to continue pulling that suitcase down the hall is pretty terrifying, but she realizes it might be best to at least know this guy's name and make sure this hallway has his dorm. She doesn't want to befriend a stalker.

"As good as that sounds, I do want to know who my savior is." The man smiled, before offering his hand to her. Charming.

Something in Peggy's mind pointed out that this particular stance wasn't normal for someone in this century. It wasn't exactly one from her previous life, but it was reminiscent of it. True many people were adopting the fashions of her time as a major fan act for Hamilton, but sometimes she wondered...

"My name is Aaron Woods. My dorm room in 180, so I was going past here anyway." Aaron again offered her a hand, and she accepted it gratefully. Not many were willing to go out of their way to help someone like her.

Peggy led Aaron to her room, awkwardly engaging in small talk. "So, what are you majoring in?"

Aaron smiled at her, dark eyes daring her to make fun of him. "Philosophy. You?"

"Graphic design." Awkward silence commences until the duo arrives at Peggy's door. Her roommates haven't arrived yet, so she had to unlock the door for Aaron. "Thank you for helping me, by the way. That suitcase is killer to carry."

A soft smile on his face, Aaron put the handle down. "You're welcome." Just as he turned to leave, his eyes lit up and he stopped. "Hey, if you need anything my room is just across the hall." Peggy only smiled at him before he left for good.

The dorm room had two bedrooms in it, as one of the bedrooms was big enough to hold two people. Peggy chose this room, planning to share it with her best friend, Maxine Jones.

When Peggy was 14 she met Max, a bookworm unafraid to speak her mind. Max had been arguing with a teacher before class about how 'A Series of Unfortunate Events is a perfectly legitimate source for her essay on how older generations treat their descendants'. Peggy had pointed out how their teacher cutting Max off from arguing was exactly like the adults in the book series, and the two had become an unstoppable duo. According to Max, that experience solidified her dreams of becoming an investigative journalist, and so she was majoring in journalism.

In the pocket of Peggy's black skirt her phone started buzzing, signifying a cry for attention from Max.

Carrot™:
my eyes are set on the place

Pegster:
how do I use that knowledge

Carrot™:
watch out

Carrot™:

Pegster:
what about a frying pan

Carrot™:
only if I get to use my knife

frickinNERD:
so take another ten minutes got it

Pegster:
nooo I want to meet you

Peggy chuckled as Katelyn kept trying to avoid getting to the dorm on time. She was the one roommate both Max and Peggy didn't know, so that's been bonding over next before they were allowed to move in. It would be exciting to meet Katelyn, because she had stubbornly refused to send pictures of herself.

All of a sudden, someone knocked very hard on the door.

Carrot™:
GUESS WHO

Unable to contain her excitement, Peggy swung open to reveal the ginger ravenclaw herself: Maxine Jones. The two embraced, hug tight so neither could escape.

"I can't believe we're rooming together!" Peggy squealed, even though they had talked about that many times before. Max laughed before shhing her. These two were obviously close, as Max put a finger right in front of Peggy's mouth to do so.

Max stepped away, slowly zipping open her backpack while she did so. "I got us..." She waved her hand above the open backpack before plummeting into it. "Some tickets..." After pulling the tickets out, she waved them around fast so Peggy couldn't make out how many there were or what they said. "To Hamilton!"

If you asked Peggy, she would deny it, but she actually yelled in both surprise and happiness. "Are you serious?!" Hamilton tickets were not cheap, and that's excusing the fact that they were extremely hard to get.

"My parents bought them for us as a celebration of college." Max's parents were extremely rich people, so it was no surprise that if they wanted tickets, they would buy them. "I even convinced them to buy one for Katelyn!"

"I heard my name?" Peggy and Max gasped as the mysterious Katelyn walked in. Her blonde hair, pale skin, tall stature and light purple dress didn't really come across as the usual history major look. If Peggy was being honest, she expected a short girl with huge glasses, not this girl.

Max popped out of her surprise first, jumping forward and hugging Kate. After a moment, Peggy joined in as well, although she was actually short and plump, so her two friends towered over her. "It's so great to finally meet you, Kate!" She exclaimed.

Kate pulled away from the hug, a bright smile on her face. "It's great to meet you guys, too. Now, what was it that you were talking about before I got here?"

"I got us all tickets to Hamilton." Max said, raising the tickets. Kate's jaw dropped, but she smiled anyway.

"Really? Have you guys seen it before?"

Max and Peggy chirped, "Nope!"

As Katelyn was about to say something else, someone knocked on the door frame behind the three girls. "Katelyn, you left this in my room!" A bag hit Kate in the face, having come from the door. Surprised, all three girls turn to face the door (Katelyn having to stumble up off the ground). Peggy's breath caught in her throat.

That...

That was Hercules Mulligan.

Sure he looked different with his short black hair, modern clothes and dark skin, but Peggy knew that had to be him. Her heart exploded with happiness. She wouldn't be alone as a reincarnate! Someone would understand! She stepped forward, a bright smile on her face and-

"Harry! Not in front of my new roommates!" Katelyn shouted, looking like an angry mom. Hercules (Harry?) Looked falselysheepish, before turning his attention to the other very confused girls in the room.

"Sure, whatever..." Hercules responded, eyes searching them. His eyes caught on Peggy, and she was sure he had recognized her, until he spoke again. "So who are these beautiful ladies?"

Max snorted, "I'm Max," she pointed at Peggy, "and this is Peggy. Don't even try with that flirting, neither of us are so easily pleased." Hercules laughed at Max's words.

"Oh I'm counting on it." Hercules winked, and Kate groaned loudly. "I'm Harry Mason, resident ladies man." That sentence was so very Hercules (To Peggy's knowledge of the man) she wanted to both laugh and cry. Instead, she snorted like Kate and Max. Her mind wasn't exactly working right currently.

Katelyn slapped a hand on Hercules' shoulder. "Keep telling yourself that, big guy." She looked back at her two roommates. "I'm going to go grab us some quick treats from a gas station, okay?

"Go ahead!" Max said, "I would kill for some of that good stuff." Peggy nodded.

"We'll leave your stuff untouched for you." Peggy added.

Hercules really after Katelyn as she walked out. "Wait, I want some too!" He yelled. After a second, Max and Peggy starting laughing hard. Maybe college would be a little bit funner with Hercules Mulligan, and maybe Peggy wouldn't be such as oddity to the world with him by her side.
