31. Police
The sizzle of bacon popping in the pan cracked and sparked. I turned off the stove, wiling my hands on my jeans. It's Monday and I get the day off from school.
Anybody else would be happy about this.
I pushed my way to the living room were a police man interviewed my mother and Louise.
"Did this man speak to you in anyway?" The policeman asked. He wore a dark blue pair of pants and a matching dress shirt. He had wisps of brown hair and dark green eyes. His silver badge read "Brian".
"No."
"Did he touch you in anyway?"
"Um. No" stuttered Louise. I saw his eyes cloud up.
"Can't you just look for him!" I growled.
My mother glares at me, Wendie squirming in her arms.
"Let the nice man do his job." She seethed.
"Last time I checked, his job was to arrest the damn psychopath." I spat.
"Look, Ms.Reed may I talk to you in private?" 'Brian' asked.
"Watch you brother Scarlet." And with that she left, placing Wendie on the couch were she finally settled down, spread out in an "eagle" position. I looked over at Louise, he began to watch Tv.
With a sigh I carefully scooted over to the wooden door where the two had disappeared.
"Ms.Reed, it may be the cause that Louise is having hallucinations."
"W-what do you mean?"
"His mind might of distinguished the features of this so called 'brother' from his memory and now he may start seeing him. He also might be sleepwalking. There are many possibilities."
"Are you calling my son crazy?" there was an edgy rattling sound in my mother's tone. My ear stayed pressed to the door. This idiot doesn't believe Louise?
"I'm not saying he's crazy, but we can't find a fingerprint. We can't really work off of nothing. The office isn't going to just go off of a man of thin air-"
I couldn't take it anymore. I pushed the door open to face 'Brian', "Well that's what he is! That's what they call him! Don't you get it? Don't you see? He's 'The Shadow' you moron."
My mother tugged her cardigan closer around her. After she kicked Blake out and found out about last night, she couldn't stop fiddling with that pale peach colored cardigan.
"The Shadow?" He repeated. I shook my head frustrated. There was a brief silence before both my mother and the cop let out a heavy sigh. "Look ma'am for now there is nothing I can do, if only we could have gotten a finger print or-"
"You wan't a fingerprint?" I barked angrily.
The cop gulped.
I stormed out of the room, heavy thuds erupted from the hollow staircase as I made my way upstairs. My bed room was messy, but looked untouched.
I threw the blanket that was lying over my floor onto the bed and grabbed the white note, a slight chill coursing through my body.
I swear I heard his chuckle.
Deep and menacing ,the shadow of what once use to be a familiar laugh. I stormed back to the cop shoving the letter in his face.
"Here's your fingerprint arsehole, now go do your job!"
I saw him getting impatient with me, but I'm not stepping down, I've been through enough.
I'm done!
The cops stubby fat finger grazed the paper as he glanced at the inked words.
"What's with the butcher knife?"
"Who want's to go first?" a trilling voice taunted in my head. I looked around, he was nowhere in sight.
"It's a threat." I mumbled, suddenly uncomfortable.
"Me!" the same voice called out. My eyes darted around as I take a step back. I ignore the heated stare of my mother. Concern not anger.
"I'm not mad I'm disappointed." He pouted.
"Sweetie are you ok-"
I hide, tied up with a black cloth. A putrid smell reeked in the room.
"Where are you!" I screamed. The cop reached for his belt.
Suddenly a door opens.
An older brother is arrested.
And a girl spots an arm with no body.
On the arm is her ex-boyfriend's bracelet.
Chocked sobs. My mother crouches near me but I can't see her anymore. I can't see anyone anymore.
My mind flashes back to that moment.
The girl is escorted outside. Cops swarm the area, some FBI officers. Her mother is crying and her father is talking to an officer. A detective, she runs to the girl.
She wears a warm smile and her hair is cut short. She pulls the shaking girl into her arms as if they were long lost buddies.
"Scarlet. Scarlet can you hear me?" A muffled voice, strict and alert calls out her name. The detective continues to call out her name until the girl, scared and shaking is snapped out of her daze.
And the girl, she falls to the ground. And she cries.
And cries.
And cries.
A protective arm is wrapped around her and a voice whispers in her ear. Almost as if it was their little secret.
"You're safe now. I'll protect you."
But now the detective is gone.
And the shadow is back.
And the girl-I, we or she or me,
We cry.
Because the detective was a liar and, it was never safe.
Not then or now.
Nor will it ever be.
