THREE| you like my freckles

Science class had just started. I was in my regular seat beside Archie as he twiddled with my braid inside of listening to the teacher. I gave him a threatening look, silently telling him that he was getting on my last nerve. Archie gave me a small smirk and continued to do the very thing he knew would annoy me. He always loved to mess me with me.

Before I could turn to him and tell him to stop, the door to the classroom was opened. Every head shot to the door where Doctor Abby Griffin was standing with a sad look on her face. Dread entered the pit of my stomach

"Is Harley Winters in this class?"

My teacher opened her mouth to reply, but I stood up with worry in my eyes, "I'm right here. What's going on?"

"It's your mother."

I woke with a start, shooting up in bed and looking around frantically. My breaths came out heavy as I squeezed my eyes shut trying to shake off the dream. When they opened again and my breathing was steady, I realized that I wasn't in my room. Confusion filled my mind as I took in my surroundings.

Pale curtains were on both sides of the small bed I was sitting in. There was a coffee table beside the bed with an untouched glass of water seated on top of it. The area I was in was dim-lit, and I could hear voices and someone shuffling around on the other side of the curtain.

What happened? Why was I in medical?

I thought back hard, but when I tried to remember how I got to medical, a quick burst of pain went through my skull. I winced and slowly lied back down hoping that the memories would come back soon.

Then, the curtain to my right was pulled back slightly, and I was greeted by the kind smile of Doctor Griffin. She had a bottle of medicine in one of her hands.

"Hey, Harley. How are you feeling?" She asked as she came to stand beside me.

"Like someone hit me in the head with a brick," I answered making her laugh lightly. "How long was I asleep?"

"Almost ten hours. Your father, and some of your friends have been in and out to check on you."

"What happened?"

She shrugged, "Some guard brought you in last night. He said you had hit your head pretty hard and passed out."

"A guard?" That sounded familiar. Memories of an attractive, cocky guard suddenly came rushing back. "Officer Blake."

Abby nodded, "He stayed with you for a while. Wouldn't leave until I practically pushed him out the door." For some reason, that information made my cheeks heat up slightly, "You only have a minor concussion, so I'm not going to keep you much longer. You'll be free to return to your classes tomorrow."

"Joy," I muttered sarcastically as Abby handed me the small bottle of pills.

"These are for the pain. Only take one every ten hours," She instructed. "And stay hydrated. If you start feeling light-headed again, come straight back to medical."

"Will do," I replied. "Thanks, Doc."

I was released from medical about half an hour later, which just so happened to be the time lunch started. I sauntered down the halls as I pulled my messy hair up in a ponytail. I probably looked and smelled like death. The only thing I wanted to do was shower, but my stomach growled in protest.

When I entered the cafeteria, I saw my friends sitting in their usual spots around a table towards the back. Clarke and Wells were laughing about something while Archie poked his food suspiciously.

As soon as I arrived at the table with my tray of food, all three of them jumped up and started talking at once.

"Oh my God! You're alive!" Archie said.

"We were so worried."

"I thought you were never going to wake up."

"I thought you were dying!"  Archie. Always the dramatic one.

I looked back and forth between my babbling friends before getting them to finally shut up, "Guys, your concern is sweet, but I'm seriously ok. It's just a small concussion."

We all sat down, and Wells scooted closer to me. He put his hand on top of mine and I looked into his dark eyes, "I'm glad you're ok. You scared the hell out of me."

I felt a pang of guilt in my stomach. Wells cared about me and loved me so much. I felt horrible for not returning that love, "It's going to take more than a small bump on the head to get rid of me."

Wells smiled, and Clarke scanned over my face, "What happened?"

"I uh..." I trailed off because all I really remembered was Officer Blake. "Nothing. The last thing I remember is going to the training room for the job shadowing."

"Maybe you should go talk to Commander Duke," Archie suggested. "Maybe you slipped and fell during the guard training, or got hit in the head by a punching bag."

"Do you really think I'm that clumsy and stupid?" I asked.

Archie shrugged, "Everyone has their moments."

He had a point, but I couldn't imagine myself getting knocked out by a punching bag, or just randomly falling. I was always agile, not clumsy, but I guess maybe I could have not been paying attention and tripped.

I let out a sigh planning on going to Commander Duke after lunch. I was definitely dreading the encounter because I seriously hated that angry, overbearing butt face.

Suddenly, I felt someone's eyes on my back. I furrowed my eyebrows as I turned my head around to find Officer Blake standing by the door with his chestnut brown eyes locked onto me. When our eyes met, a smirk pulled at his lips. I responded with a slight glare, but then I remembered Abby telling me that he was the one who carried me to medical. He would know exactly what happened.

"I'll be right back," I said to Wells as I pulled my hand away from his.

"Where are you going?" Clarke asked.

I said the first excuse that popped in my head, "Bathroom." What a lame, generic excuse.

Surprisingly, they all just nodded and continued to eat their food.

I walked across the cafeteria trying to keep my fists unclenched as I felt Officer Blake's eyes on me. I remembered some of our conversation and the anger and annoyance that came with it. That anger and annoyance were threatening to come to the surface again as I was only a few feet away from where he was standing.

Officer Blake crossed his arms over his chest as our eyes met. I motioned for him to follow me as I passed him. We walked down the hallway a little bit before I turned around quickly making him come to a fast stop. I spoke in a mean tone, partly because I hated the way my mind was naturally curious about him.

"Ok, I'll make this quick because I really do not want to have to stand here in your presence very long," I spit out.

That freaking smirk returned, "But I thought you liked me and my freckles."

"Excuse me?"

Him and his freckles? Why would I....

Oh crap. The memory of the last thing I said to him before I passed out came rushing back, and I could feel the red on my cheeks, "That... That wasn't me saying I like you. That was me being delirious from a concussion."

He gave me a cheeky grin, "Whatever you say, Princess."

Princess? I gritted my teeth becoming even more annoyed, "All I came here to do was try to figure out how I got this stupid concussion, but of course you have to make it difficult. I already have a pounding headache and your cocky comments are only making it worse... and my name is Harley, not Princess!"

Breathing heavily from my angry outburst, I brought my eyes up to meet his which were laced with amusement, "Are you always this overdramatic?"

I let out an aggravated huff, "Just tell me how I got the concussion."

"Alright," He said. "But first..." He gave me a mischievous look, and I knew I wasn't going to like what came out of his mouth next. "You have to say that you like my freckles."

I scoffed, "Yeah, like that's going to happen."

"Ok, well I guess you'll never find out how you got the concussion. Have a good day," Officer Blake turned around to leave, but I quickly grabbed his arm.

"Wait," I said through gritted teeth and anger in my gut. He slowly turned around, with a grin forming on his lips. "I'm going to get you back for this."

"Can't wait for it, Princess."

I glared at him, "It's Harley!"

"I believe there's something you need to say to me," He was not going to make this easy. "I'm waiting, Princess."

"Harley!" I almost yelled making the few people passing by us give me a weird look. I let out an exasperated sigh as Officer Blake rolled his eyes, "I... I likeyourfreckles."

He leaned closer, "Sorry, what was that?"

"I said, I like your annoying, pain in the ass freckles!" I was finally able to say clearly.

A smug smile spread on his lips, "Thank you. I will treasure that compliment forever."

I rolled my eyes, "Can you please just tell me how I got this stupid concussion now?"

"Well, a deal's a deal, Princess"  I had given up on trying to get him to call me my real name. "I was just doing my normal morning routine when I heard shouts coming from the training room.  Naturally, being the heroic man I am, I ran in there without hesitation."

"Yeah, you're a real patriot," I muttered with sarcasm.

He ignored my comment, "I saw John Murphy on top of a very angry girl who was strangling him. So, I pulled him off and saved you. Later I found out that while he was attacking you, he hit your head against the floor."

Everything came rushing back. I remembered Murphy taunting me, and then hitting me in the gut. I remembered Officer Blake rushing in and holding me back from jumping at him. I also remembered him carrying me to medical and being pressed against his warm and muscular chest.

In that moment, my mind began working against me as I glanced over him. Why did he have to be so annoyingly attractive and toned?

I forced myself to stop thinking about Officer Blake's good looks as his eyes met mine, "I guess I should be thanking you for taking me to medical when I passed out."

He nodded, "Well, you were there all damsel like. It was the least I could do."

Officer Blake just had to ruin it. I actually tried to thank him, and he ruined it with his cocky attitude, "At least after today, you and I will never have to interact again."

"I don't know about that, Princess. You seem like a magnet for trouble."

I never planned on talking to him again. If I ever needed a guard, at least I would know who not to ask for, "Goodbye, Officer Blake."

His eyes didn't leave mine, "It's Bellamy."

"I don't care," I retorted. If he wasn't going to call me by my name, I wasn't going to call him by his.

I turned to walk away, and before I had even gotten five feet away from him, Bellamy called out, "Hey Princess!" I turned my head to meet his eyes again. A smirk ghosted his lips. "You like my freckles."

I hoped he didn't see the slight hint of red on my cheeks, "You wish I did."

And after that, I went back into the cafeteria unable to get my encounter with Bellamy Blake to fade from my mind. Not even when Wells walked me to my apartment and kissed me goodbye. I could tell that cocky guard wouldn't be leaving my thoughts any time soon.
