THIRTEEN| justice is sweet
I was awoken in the middle of the night by the sound of people yelling and running outside my dad and I's apartment. I sat up in bed quickly and threw the covers off of myself as I ran into the living room. My dad was already up. He was pulling on his shoes and reaching for his jacket.
I gave him a look of alarm, "What's going on?"
"Someone's just set Commander Duke's office on fire."
"Oh my God" I replied as I ran back into my room.
I quickly changed out of my sleeping shorts and pulled on some jeans. I grabbed my guard's jacket from the coat hanger beside my bed and pulled it on. Names flew through my head as I tried to think of who would do something like that.
Commander Duke had many enemies mainly because he was the commanding officer and in charge of many arrests on the Ark. There was no telling how many people would lash out against him.
I sprinted down the halls of Alpha Station. People were exiting their apartments in confusion about what was going on. Several of them still in their sleeping clothes. The hallways were crowded, so I had to shove my way through crowds as I neared Commander Duke's office.
The thick smell of smoke hit my nostrils as I turned the last corner. I spotted several guardsmen and a few cadets standing by his door, and I could see the orange flames dancing behind it.
I walked up to a few Officers who were frantically talking over a radio to whoever was inside. I spotted Dallas standing to my right, and I grabbed his arm.
"What's going on? Why is Duke still in there?"
"The kid that did it handcuffed him to his desk before setting the place on fire. Bellamy ran in there to get him, but then several shelves fell in front of the door. They're trapped in there."
"No," fear struck my whole body at the thought of Bellamy dying. "No, we have to go in there and get them! There has to be some way in!"
"That's what the Officers are working on. Equipment is on the way-"
"They could be dead by the time it gets here!" I yelled more loudly than I meant to. My voice slowly began to break. "Bellamy could be dead. I-I can't just... I have to do something Dallas."
Dallas put his hands on my shoulders, "Bellamy will be fine, ok? I know you want to help, but until the proper equipment gets here... There's nothing we can do."
I shook my head refusing to believe his words. There had to be some other way in. There had to be a way to get to them. Suddenly, my eyes widened as an idea popped into my head.
"The vents!" I exclaimed as I turned away from Dallas. "I can get in if I crawl through the ventilation system, and I can get them out."
Before he could give his input or protest I began running down the halls towards the janitor's closet. There was an entrance to the ventilation system there, and plenty of cabinets to climb on to get to it.
I slung open the door as I searched for the vent. My eyes landed on the small metal flap towards the top of the back wall. The thought of saving Bellamy never faded from my mind as I used one of the cabinets to push myself up so I could climb into the vent.
I raised the flap up and used all the strength I had to pull myself into the vent. I struggled for a few moments before I was finally able to begin crawling army style through the ventilation system. It was narrow and low and sweat broke out across my forehead as I crawled towards the smell of smoke.
I began coughing as I neared the vent in the wall of Commander Duke's office. Smoke filled that area of the system, and my eyes burned as they began to water. My coughing became more violent as I rolled over and managed to turn myself around so my feet were facing the metal bars of the vent.
I kicked and kicked as hard I could, letting out a sound of frustration as the vent stayed in place. Smoke blurred my vision as I delivered one final kick that bust the vent open.
I crawled out of the opening and fell to the floor. Suddenly surrounded by bright orange flames that were burning fiercely around me. The room was ablaze with extreme heat, and it was almost impossible to breathe. My lungs felt like they had turned to sandpaper as I frantically looked around for Bellamy.
"Harley!"
I turned my head to see Bellamy and Commander Duke amongst the flames to my left. They were trying to move some of the heavy shelves blocking their path to the door and failing miserably.
Bellamy ran up to me as I stood up from the floor. He reached out for me, but I swatted his hands away, "We don't have time for that," I pointed to the vent. "We have to get out of here."
Commander Duke nodded, "Help me push my desk against the wall so we can climb up there."
With flames all around us, we got behind Commander Duke's desk. All three of us pushed with all our strength until the desk was right against the wall. Duke jumped up onto the desk and maneuvered himself into the vent.
Bellamy held out his hand for me, "You next, Princess."
Then, before I could grab his hand, he stumbled slightly wincing in pain, "Bellamy?" Panic overtook my whole body as I glanced over him to see a sharp piece of metal in his side. How the hell did I not notice that before? It must have happened when all the shelves fell before I got there. The flames grew even hotter and began to encircle the desk as Bellamy fell to his knees. "No, no, no! Don't you dare do this to me, Bellamy Blake!"
He clutched his stomach, "I can't make it. Just go Harley" I kneeled in front of him as he reached out to touch my cheek. "You deserve to live your life and be happy with Wells."
A tear streaked down my cheek, "But I don't want Wells," I choked out. "I want you."
Another shelf fell on the other side of the room as the end of the desk slowly started to catch on fire. A small smile pulled at Bellamy's lips, "I never thought I'd get to hear you say that."
"Yeah, well you're going to be around to hear me say a lot more because I am not leaving you," Bellamy's eyes were barely open as stood and pulled him up with me with all my might. God, he was so heavy.
I helped him up onto the desk and then climbed up after him as he leaned against the wall for support. The desk was slowly catching more flames as Bellamy reached up to grasp the floor of the vent.
I heard him let out a loud sound of pain as I grabbed his waist and helped shove him into the vent. My arms burned more than they ever had as I let out another fit of coughing. I pulled myself in behind him, and there was just enough room for me to get beside him. Well, pretty much half of my body was thrown over his back, but it worked.
The ventilation system was burning up as I glanced over at Bellamy. His eyes were closed and fear crept into my mind. I grabbed his face with my hands.
"Bellamy! Damn it, Bellamy! Open your eyes!" When there was no response, I put my fingers to his throat, and let out a breath of relief when I found a pulse. "I guess I'll just have to drag us both."
My muscles protested as I began pulling Bellamy along beside me. We only went a few inches at a time, and tears came to my eyes at the aching in my arm muscles. I yelled in pain as I dragged Bellamy as far as I could at once, trying to move faster through the ventilation system.
What felt like hours passed by as I finally saw the small flap that led to the janitor's closet. I pulled Bellamy to the edge and stuck my head out.
"Help!" I shouted as loud as my lungs would allow. "Help!"
A few moments passed before I spotted Commander Duke, Dallas, several other guards, and Wells come running into the room. I forced them to get Bellamy down first, and once he was safe I fell into Wells's arms coughing roughly.
My face was covered in ash. There were burns on my arms, and I could barely even stand on my own, but none of that mattered. I didn't give a damn about any of it. My eyes were trained on Bellamy as they brought a stretcher in and placed his body on it.
Wells was asking me if I was ok, but I wasn't listening to anything he was saying. I forgot about everything and everyone in that room except Bellamy. I pushed myself away from Wells as I saw Bellamy's eyes barely flutter open.
I rushed to his side and stroked his hair off of his forehead, "Bellamy," Tears of relief ran down my face as my voice came out as more of a sob. "You're going to be ok."
"Harley," His voice was raspy and weak.
"I'm right here," I replied as I grabbed his hand and gave it a reassuring squeeze. "I'm not going anywhere."
"I need to tell you something," He motioned for me to come closer, and I leaned my head down by his lips. I felt his breath against my ear as he whispered. "I want you too."
Before I could answer, he passed out again, and the guards were carrying him away to medical. Wells was staring at me in shock, and I was going to try to explain to him how I felt somehow, but someone stepped in front of me before I could.
It was Dallas, "They know who set the fire."
"Who?" I was ready to beat that asshole up, no matter who they were.
"John Murphy."

I stormed through the halls of Farm station with several Officers behind me. I argued and argued with them until they agreed the let me be the one to make the arrest. Well, actually Commander Duke ordered that they let me make the arrest.
Everyone we passed by stopped to stare at the event unfolding before them. I clenched my fists as we approached Murphy's apartment. I stopped in front of the door, taking a deep breath. My heart pounded in anticipation as I nodded to one of the Officers.
He swiped a key card and the door slid open. I got out handcuffs as I stepped into the small apartment, finding Murphy sitting alone on the couch. He immediately stood up and looked around in panic.
"John Murphy," I said as I walked towards him. He gave me a hateful look as I reached out to handcuff him. "You're under arrest for attempted murder."
Before the metal handcuffs touched his wrists, Murphy tried to punch me in the face. However, I was prepared for his resistance, so I dodged his punch and hit him in the stomach with my shock baton. Murphy fell over, gasping in pain.
As I stood over him, I had never expected justice to feel so good.

I couldn't find what station Murphy was from, so sorry if I got that wrong. I just guessed farm Station, lol.
