Chapter One

PART ONE OF OUR NEW FAMILY

Wanda was silent on the drive to the Barnes-Rogers apartment. Bucky glanced back at her, trying to gauge her emotions. She was hard to read though, staring blankly out of the window at the rain.

Steve tried to start a conversation. "I'm sorry about all the rain, kid. I wish it was bright and sunny for your arrival, but, unfortunately, I do not control the weather."

"It's fine." Wanda said quietly.

"Now, you should know we live in a building with a bunch of other people. There's the Starks, Tony, his wife Pepper, and their kids, Peter and Morgan. There's the Bartons, Clint, Laura, and their kids Cooper, Lila, and Nathaniel. Then there's Natasha Romanoff, Bruce Banner, Victor Stone- we call him Vision, don't ask why- James Rhodes, and Sam Wilson."

"Sväté sr***y!" (I won't even swear in another language, deal with it. It means 'holy sh**!' If you want to know, google it.)

Bucky and Steve laughed, while they didn't understand EXACTLY what it meant, they got the gist.

"No swearing," Steve scolded.

Wanda looked at him like he was crazy. "When are you from, the 1940s?!"

"Why does everyone always ask that?" Steve muttered.

"Because you act like an old man," Bucky replied.

"I do not!"

"You do so, and you know it."

Wanda smiled softly. Then one of the names hit her upside the head. "Stark? Tony Stark? Isn't he a billionaire or something?"

"Yeah, but he's a friend of ours. Technically, we live in one of his buildings."

'Počkaj, musím žiť s STARK?!' She thought, horrified. 'Moji noví otcovia sú PRIATELIA s tým hrozným človekom?!' (Wait, do I have to live with STARK?! My new fathers are FRIENDS with that terrible man?!)

"You look horrified," Bucky said.

Wanda slumped in her seat. "It's fine."

Steve and Bucky glanced at each other doubtfully, but left her alone. They pulled up in front of the building.

Wanda's eyes went wide. This place was HUGE. This was where she was going to live? With a place this big, how often was she even going to see Stark?!

Steve and Bucky started getting out of the car. Bucky grabbed an umbrella, and opened Wanda's door. She climbed out, walking into the building with him. She couldn't stop looking around as they entered. It looked even bigger inside, and was decorated in a very modern style. She had only ever seen buildings anywhere near this once, and that was the flipping airport!

The couple glanced at each other, grinning at Wanda's look of shock and wonder. "Will this place do?" Bucky joked.

"I'll have to think about it," She answered sarcastically.

"Let's show you to your room." Steve said, guiding her to the elevator. They went up to the fifth floor. "This is our floor. You're allowed anywhere on this floor that you would like to be. That's our personal living room, that's a bathroom, that's the linen closet, that's the kitchen where we struggle to cook more than a handful of recipes-"

Wanda giggled.

"What?" Bucky asked. "Think you can do better?"

Wanda smirked, nodding.

"Well, then, you can have a meal shift with the rest of us. Our room is here. We'll leave the lamp on, feel free to knock if you need us for anything, we're happy to help. And your room is over here. It's pretty plain, you can decorate it however you like. That's our guest room, we mostly just use it if we're painting, but sometimes my family comes over. Speaking of which, they're coming to meet you Friday."

Wanda nodded, then yawned. "What time is it?"

"Four. You tired? It's like ten in Sokovia. You're gonna have some massive jet lag."

Wanda yawned again. "I'm only tired cuz I only slept for like two hours."

"Then why didn't you sleep on the plane then?"

"I've never been on a plane!"

"I'd," Bucky corrected.

Wanda looked at him in confusion. "What?"

"You meant 'I'd never been on a plane before.' Not I've, since you have now. I'd is the past tense of I've."

"Oh. English is weird."

"How about you just head on to bed. You can unpack later. Just take a quick nap, we'll wake you up in about an hour."

Wanda yawned again. "Ok." She crawled into bed, curling up into a ball. She was fast asleep in about thirty seconds.

The couple smiled at each other before heading to the living room. "So, you think she'll move in nicely?" Bucky asked.

"I hope so. Now that she's sleeping, what should we do?"

"Something fun." Bucky smirked.

"Bake a adoption cake to surprise her with?"

"Duh! What else would I mean?"

"I don't know. Maybe, uhhh... ya know..."

"Oh my GOD, Steve! You're so dirty minded!" They both burst into laughter. Bucky quickly kissed his boyfriend. "I love you."

"I love you, too. Now, let's go make a cake!"

The opened up the book of family recipes that Bucky's mom had given him when he moved out. They found the recipe for his great-grandparents' famous chocolate cake with cinnamon cream cheese frosting. They finished up the batter and put it in the oven. Steve grabbed the bag of flour before tripping over his feet. The bag fell to the floor, sending flour everywhere.

Bucky wiped off his eyes, looking at his black t-shirt and pants that were now covered in a dusting of white. He glared at Steve before taking a handful of the stuff and throwing it at his boyfriend. Steve looked shocked before a sly grin crossed his face, and he hurled some flour back at Bucky.

"LEG THE FIRST ANNUAL FLOUR GAMES BEGIN!" Bucky yelled. Soon, the entire kitchen was coated in flour.

Steve reaches into the bag to get more only to find it empty. "Now what are we supposed to do?"

Bucky shrugged. "We've got five minutes until the cake is done baking." He gave Steve a kiss. "You look so cute like that."

Ate e returned the kiss. "You, too, Buck."

They melted into a deep kiss.

Natasha smirked as she walked into the room. She watched them for about two minutes before saying, "Whatcha doing?"

The men startled apart. "Oh-oh, hi, Nat!" Steve stuttered. "How-How long were you standing th-there?"

"About two minutes," Natasha was still smirking. "You two are adorable. Though, do you mind explaining to me why there's flour covering yourselves and the kitchen?"

"We were making a cake for Wanda."

Nat just looked more confused before shrugging. She turned towards the well worn red suitcase that she knew didn't belong to either of her friends. "Where is Wanda, by the way?"

"Napping. Jet lag's got her good."

The oven timer beeped. Bucky took the cake out of the oven, setting it on a rack to cool. "Do you want to help us make the frosting?"

"Nah. I'll leave you to it." She winked before leaving the apartment.

The couple looked at each other before rolling their eyes. They made the frosting without anymore incidents. They frosted the cake and stepped back to admire their work.

"Can I lick the bowl?" Bucky asked.

"No, I'm going to," Steve said, scooping out frosting with a spoon and eating it.

Bucky narrowed his eyes, leaning in for a kiss, which a confused Steve gave him. Bucky grinned and licked the frosting off their lips. Steve laughed and shoved them. They washed the dishes.

Wanda came in, rubbing her eyes. "Steve? Bucky?"

"Hey, sleepy head. You need anything?"

"Caffeine would be appreciated."

"I was about to go to Starbucks," Bucky said. "Wanna come with?"

"What's 'Starbucks'?" Wanda asked curiously.

"Coffee chain. C'mon, child, let me educate you."

Wanda shrugged, running up to them. She sniffed the air. "What's that smell?" She looked around spotting the cake. "Ooh, that looks good."

"Wait until after dinner," Steve laughed. "Go get your raincoat."

"I don't have one."

"You don't?"

Wanda shook her head. "No."

"Then we'll have to get you one when we take you shopping tomorrow. For now, we'll see if you can borrow one of Natasha's. Come on."

They went downstairs to Natasha's apartment. "Hey, guys!" She greeted them. "And you must be Wanda. I'm Natasha Romanoff." She wasn't smiling, which would have been weird if you didn't know that Natasha was from Europe, where it was really weird to smile at someone the didn't know. Wanda probably appreciated it.

"Nice to meet you," Wanda said quietly.

"You, too."

"Can she borrow a raincoat? She doesn't have one, and she'd look ridiculous in one of ours."

"Of course she can! I'll be right back." She returned a minute later with a red and black one. "How's this one? It should fit."

Wanda smiled slightly. "Thank you."

"You're welcome. You three have fun now."

They hopped in the car and took a trip to a bookstore. They got some Starbucks- Wanda reluctantly agreeing to let them pick something for her. Though, she couldn't help but smile at their conversation.

"She needs a good solid tea. She strikes me as a tea person," Steve said.

"Da**it, Steve! That's why she needs a coffee! Coffee is life!"

"Not everyone has to like your source of nutrients, Bucky."

"They do if they live in my house!"

"What if she doesn't like coffee, Buck?! Whatcha gonna go, kick her out?!"

"Of course not! I would force feed her to teach her the error of her ways!"

Steve rolled his eyes, and they kept bickering.

Eventually they decided that a mocha Frappuccino would have to do. Wanda could only pray that it was actually good.

Steve ordered for himself before turning to Bucky. "What do you want?"

"A coffee as dark as my soul."

"One vanilla latte with extra cream and sugar, coming right up!"

Other patrons laughed.

"STEVEN GRANT ROGERS YPU KNOW WHAT I MEANT!"

"Do I?" Steve smiled, partially at Bucky, partially at Wanda, who was giggling. "Fine," He huffed in fake exasperation. "One black coffee, please?" The barista nodded, and two others started making the drinks.

Wanda watched in interest, her eyes following the movements that seemed so familiar to the man and woman behind the counter. They handed the drinks to Steve and Bucky.

Steve handed her the cold drink, and she couldn't help but smile. It had whipped cream! She loved whipped cream!

She took a sip, and was glad to learn that she liked it. She grinned.

"Like it?" Bucky asked, looking up from far-darker-than-his-soul coffee (as Steve insisted on calling it).

Wanda nodded. "Thank you."

"No problem, kid."

They lead her to the book section. "You good at reading English?" Steve asked.

Wanda shook her head.

"But you can understand it well?"

"Pretty well, yes."

"Alright then. We'll get you a nice big kid book to listen to and a little kid book to practice your reading."

"Did you just say 'big kid book'?"

"You got a problem with that? Anyway, I hear a lot of kids your age like this series called Percy Jackson. I thought you might like it."

Wanda nodded. "Ok."

They bought the first Percy Jackson book, along with Goodnight Moon. "It's a classic." Steve and Bucky insisted.

They went home and ate the cake- which Wanda also loved. They read the first chapter of The Lightning Thief before heading off to bed.
