Chapter Two

“How was your first day?” Miyo’s other dad is home now and is sitting on the couch playing video games. “It was pretty good, honestly.” She walks past him and continues on to her room, but her dad, Evan, gets curious, “Are you okay Miyo?”

“Yeah, I just have homework, Dad.”

“Alright, sorry.”

Miyo goes to her room to do “homework”. She easily shuts her door and falls onto her bed, dropping her book bag beside it. She pulls out the paper once again and looks at it. Miyo kinda wanted to go, but she never went to any of her dances in Toronto. Miyo sighs, her blue eyes searching her empty white ceiling. Her mind was everywhere, like she had multiple people inside of her, pulling strings. Half of the people happy, the other sad. Music usually helps. Miyo pushes off her bed and turns on her stereo, and the 80’s theme music starts playing. She has a taste like her father Evan, a mix of everything, but the majority of 80’s is from her other father, Jon. She loved them both so much, speaking of love, or not, Miyo wanted to get to know Gwin a little more, a lot more actually. What color did she like? What type of music did she listen to? Did she play video games? Was she gay? Miyo stops her thoughts as Cyndi Lauper continues on her stereo. Miyo sighs and makes love to the ceiling with her eyes.

“So you goin’ to this party nerd?” Clive shoves Ethan against the locker again. “Probably, that asylum is haunted, wouldn’t mind seeing some dead people.” Ethan sort of jokes, he wants to see if Clive will actually believe him. “Really?” Clive scoffs; nope guess he won’t believe him, or maybe...

“Yeah, it’s been haunted ever since the 1800s. You could hear every single patient scream in agony.”  Ethan smirked, really creepily. Clive inches closer to Ethan, “Woah.” Clive says and pushes Ethan away. Ethan breathes heavily, his heartbeat loud in his ears. “Did I just scare my bully away?” Ethan laughs and puts his hands on his head. “Let’s go to this asylum.” He says to himself in the mirror.

“Oooh, an asylum? Perfect place for pranks.” Jake chuckles to himself, Lillie walks by as he does this. “Is that why you were running through the library this morning?” Lillie’s voice scares Jake. He turns to her, “Uh, yeah?”

“Hmm,” she laughs, “so are you going?”

“Are you?” Jake asks his romantic trait kicking in. Lillie realizes it, “Maybe, why?”

“Well you asked me, and if you’re going I’ll go.” His eyes fill with hearts as Lillie chuckles, “Okay, see you around.” She walks away with tons of books in her arms. Jake watches her disappear into the library.

Gwin sits in the band room, as usual, she reads the flyer questioning herself. I do love Halloween, and Miyo might be there. She instantly stops her thoughts, I just met this girl. Gwin sticks the flyer in her bookbag and gets out her violin. She plays her beautiful music, falling into her own world. A world where she was happy.

Another week goes by, and Miyo finally knows her schedule and where she’s going. But she’s still only talked to one person. Which was Lillie? She really liked Lillie and loved that she’s her friend, but Miyo really wants to talk to Gwin. She’s just really nervous. Nervous about falling even further in love with her, getting her hopes up, just to have them put back down again.

“Gwin? Right?” Miyo notices the teacher not teaching, so she could socialize.

“Yeah, and you’re Miyo right?”

“Guess we both have trouble finding stuff with our names on it,” Miyo says and Gwin chuckles. Thank God Miyo’s father was the biggest clown around. The girls talk for what seems like forever. “What’s your favorite color?” Miyo asks. Gwin thinks for a little bit, “Uh, black, or blue, but like a pastel blue.” She smiles and Miyo catches herself staring at her. They turn away from each other. Gwin breaks the awkwardness, “Soooo, what’s your favorite color?” They both laugh; it blends like chocolate. “Purple. Dark purple. Light purple. Just about any shade of purple.”

Gwin’s brown eyes sparkle as the girls talk about what they’re going to be when they’re out of school. Miyo’s eyes shine a brighter blue as she explains how she wants to travel around the world in an old classic Mustang. Towards the end of class, the girls just look at each other, the room is full of silence. It’s just them two in the back,  making goo-goo eyes at each other. Gwin realizes what she’s getting into. She snaps out of it, “Are you going to this Halloween party?” She wishes her hair was long enough for her to hide behind, but of course, she loved it short. “Yeah!” Miyo finally snaps out of her trance. The bell rings and students shuffle. Gwin leaves too fast for Miyo to ask her. “I hope she’s going too,” Miyo mumbles to herself and continues to her next class.

Ethan struggles with his gym locker. He tries his best not to make too much noise, because lucky for him, half of the football team was in his gym class; one of them being Clive.

He finishes putting in his other contact and quickly runs back to his locker to put all the extra clothing away. The locker room is quiet, which means everyone is already out in the gym waiting for attendance. Ethan worries; what’s worse? Being late, or being beat in a stupid game by guys who are 2 times his size? Ethan sighs, he doesn’t want to be stereotyped just because he prefers Doctor Who over a football game. He walks out of the boys' locker room just as the teacher calls his name. “Ethan Jett?” The door closing makes everyone stare at Ethan. “Uh, sorry. I had trouble with my contact.” He was only half lying. “I understand Mr. Jett. Get in line now.” There are of course two gym teachers, the male checks Ethan off as present. “Alrighty, kids today we’ll be starting ultimate frisbee.” The gym echoes with some cheers and some groans,  some kids say absolutely nothing. “Today, to make you teens actually socialize, we teachers assigned you guys partners.” Terror shreds down Ethan’s spine.

The teachers start saying names, and then their partners. They’re pairing boys with girls. Opposite genders, the best choice, having cocky boys and moody girls. “Ethan Jett…” the teacher starts, “and Clive Dyer.” Ethan’s glad the school has those emergency medical boxes in the gym because he’s sure as hell his heart has stopped.

“Alright, one partner out of each group get a frisbee. You’re then going to toss back and forth, warm up your arms a bit.” Ethan turns to Clive, “Would you like me to get it?” He asks the nearly 7-footman, who is, unfortunately, his bully and now his partner. “I can,” Clive says blankly. Thoughts swarm Ethan, is he still shaken up by what I said earlier? He did get really close to me. “Here, hope you like the color blue.” Clive chuckles, trying to lighten the mood. Ethan shortly joins in. “Okay, you ready to get your frisbee on pony boy?” He’s still picking on me though. What the fu-? “Look out Ethan!” Clive shouts, but the frisbee nails Ethan in the head. “Ouch.” Something snaps in Ethan; he starts laughing. He picks up the frisbee and easily throws it towards Clive. It gracefully falls into his hands. “Nice toss Jett!” One of the teachers shouts from across the gym. Clive makes eye contact with Ethan, smiles and tosses it back. What the hell is going on?
