Chapter 48: Young Woman

   "You're what?" The mother yelled.

   "I'm dating Pierre," Catherine replied.

   "Catherine, that's wonderful!" Christine exclaimed.

"Not the reaction I was expecting," the daughter thought.

"Wonderful? Wonderful?!" Erik exclaimed. "How is this wonderful? Our seven-year-old daughter is dating, Christine!"

Just then, Gustave walked into the room. "Wait. What?"

"Your sister has a boyfriend," Erik replied, throwing his hands up in the air and letting them slap against his thighs.

"You have a boyfriend? You're seven! Are you crazy?" Gustave exclaimed.

"Gustave, come on. Like you said, she's seven. It's cute, alright? Be nice to your sister," Christine chided.

Catherine slipped away quietly and went to go see Bella.

"That sounds like it went over well," Bella joked as Catherine entered the room.

   "Very funny," Catherine said sarcastically.

   "Come now, I'm only joking."

"My entire family hates me. This is hardly a laughing matter."

"If it makes you feel any better, I don't hate you," Bella replied with a smile.

   "Thanks."

"You know, they don't hate you either. They're just hurt that you hid your relationship from them."

"Gustave's never going to speak to me again. I just know it," Catherine winced.

"I'm sure that's not true. You're worrying too much. This will all blow over in a few days. Just lay low until then," Bella suggested.

"Okay, I will. Thanks, Bella. Anyway, enough talk about my problems. How have you been doing with the baby and all that?"

"The morning sickness isn't fun, but aside from that, it's been great. I'm really excited for this baby."

   "Have you thought of names?"

"I was thinking either Athena or Cleo if it's a girl."

   "And if it's a boy?"

"I haven't thought about any boy names yet."

"What about something Greek like Achilles or Demetrius or Theo?"

"I love those!" Bella exclaimed. "Oh! What about Aphrodite for a girl?"

"That's the name my mother's been considering for if she has a girl," Catherine laughed.

"Where do you think I got the idea?" Bella joined Catherine in laughing.

Suddenly, Gustave entered the room. "Get out, Catherine."

Catherine knew that Gustave was mad, for he never called her Catherine. He usually called her Cath. "Gustave, please let me explain," she pleaded.

"I don't want to hear it. Just go. Go now. Leave me alone."

"And to think I once loved you and called you my brother," Catherine shot as she exited.

"Gustave, that was really harsh," Bella pointed out.

"She deserves it," Gustave shot back.

"She's young. She made a mistake. We've all been there. God knows you've been there. As I recall, you hid your relationship with Celeste from everybody at first."

   "That's different."

"How is that any different from what Catherine did?"

"For one, I was older. Two, I didn't wait an entire month to tell my family."

"You were afraid of what Lucas would do when he found out you were dating his sister. Catherine was afraid of what Erik would do when he found out she was dating Pierre. You both hid your relationship for a time and you were both young. Still not seeing the similarities?"

"She betrayed me. I didn't betray anyone when I was dating Celeste," Gustave brought out.

"So what, Gustave? The kid made a mistake and she's sorry. Why can't you get that through your thick head?" Bella exclaimed. "You know what? I can't deal with you when you're like this. I'm going to spend the night with Catherine. Don't follow me."

"With pleasure," Gustave muttered as he tossed a pillow at her.

Bella didn't even react when the pillow hit her. She stopped for a split second to angrily pick the pillow up off the floor, and then continued to walk out the doorway.

"Come on, Bella. Don't be like that," Gustave begged.

   "Leave me alone, Gustave."

Gustave didn't follow her. He thought it best not to anger her further in her condition.

Bella walked into Catherine's room and asked, "Hey, Cath, can I sleep here tonight? Gustave and I-"

"I know, Bella. I heard," Catherine interrupted. "You didn't have to defend me like that."

"Yes, Cath, I did," Bella said as she sat down on the bed. She lightly nudged Catherine in the arm as she continued, "We girls have to stick together."

"Of course you can spend the night here," Catherine answered, embracing Bella.

"Ow," Bella whispered as she pushed away from Catherine and put a hand to her stomach.

   "What happened?"

   "The baby kicked."

   "The baby kicked?"

"The baby kicked. Oh my goodness! Cath, the baby kicked!" Bella exclaimed.

Gustave burst into the room. "The baby kicked?"

"Babe, I can't believe it!" Bella cried.

"I love you," Gustave declared. Gustave turned to his sister. "Cath, I'm really sorry. I overreacted. I did the same thing when I was younger. I'm just...overprotective when it comes to you. I don't want to see you get hurt."

"Yeah, yeah. I forgive you and all that sappy stuff. Gustave, focus. You're baby moved!" Catherine exclaimed.

"I know. What do I do? Do you need something? Water? Food? Oh god. Do we need to go to the hospital? Is it dying?" Gustave broke into a nervous sweat.

"Gustave, relax," Bella giggled, and pulled him by his shirt collar into a kiss.

"Do you mind doing that in your own room?" Catherine asked with an air of disgust.

"Okay, okay. Goodnight, Cath," Gustave replied.
