Chapter 4: Wait. She's What?

Two weeks later, Christine was still under the weather. Erik urged her to seek medical attention and she did. The report she got was far from anything she was expecting. Upon being told the news, she burst into tears.

"How am I going to tell Erik?" Christine thought.

By the time Christine got home, it was almost dinner time. Erik greeted her at the door.

"Ah, my love, how was your appointment? Are you okay? You look like you've been crying. Is something the matter? Please, tell me so I can help," he plead, quite obviously concerned.

Instead of answering, Christine kissed Erik. It wasn't just any kiss. It was a passionate, loving kiss. Erik knew that something wasn't quite right, but he could tell she didn't feel like talking at the moment, so instead of forcing her to share the results, he said, "Come, Angel, let's go eat dinner."

The couple ate in silence. Christine couldn't figure out how to tell Erik the news. She had no idea how he'd take it.
Erik didn't like the silence. He decided to break it by asking, "Are you feeling any better, my love?"

"No, not really," she replied.

"I'm sorry to hear that. Didn't they give you anything to cure your illness?"

"There is nothing they can give me to cure my condition."

"Dearest, whatever is wrong, we will get through it together, but getting better starts with you telling me what is the matter," Erik said, concerned.

"I don't know how to tell you this."

"Take your time, Angel."

"Erik...Erik, I'm pregnant," Christine reported.

Erik was silent. He was very shocked. He couldn't have been happier. He wanted nothing more than to have children with Christine. Erik was going to be a father. He was elated.

"Erik, did you hear me?" Christine asked.

Instead of speaking, Erik stood up and gently pulled Christine out of her chair. He embraced her. She felt safe with his strong arms around her.

"Christine, I love you," Erik said. "I have wanted to have children with you, but you are so young. I didn't think you would want children for a few more years."

"Well, whether we want one or not, we are having a child," she said. "Erik, I was so worried. I thought you weren't ready for children."

"Of course I'm ready for children. I've been wanting children since we got married," he revealed. "I just didn't want to push you into something you weren't ready for."

Erik and Christine were going to have a little son or daughter, and they were happy.
The next day Erik and Christine got word that they had been invited to a masquerade ball at the Paris Opera House.

"Should we go?" Erik asked.

"I think it would be nice to see Meg. While we're there we could visit Father's grave. That is, if we go," Christine replied.

"I'm okay with going if you want to go," Erik said.

"Aren't you afraid Raoul will be there?" Christine asked.

"Do you think he will be?"

"He is the patron. I'd be surprised if he wasn't there."

"Well, I'll leave it up to you. We don't even have to go to the ball. We could just go to visit Meg and your father's grave if you'd like," Erik suggested.

"I'd like that. I would also like to see Madame Giry. I never got a chance to thank her for everything she's done for me," Christine said.

"Okay then. One more thing, the invitation to the masquerade was sent by Meg. I was just wondering, how does she know where we live?" Erik asked.

"Soon after we got our new house, I sent word to Meg and told her everything. I couldn't let her go on worrying about me," Christine confessed. "I should have told you. I'm sorry."

"Don't worry, my love," he replied. "I am perfectly fine with Meg knowing our location. I trust her."

Erik agreed with not going to the ball. They declined the invitation to the masquerade and instead started planning their trip to Paris. It would be their first time back since they ran away.
Both Erik and Christine had mixed feelings about the prospect of returning to the opera house. They were excited, yet nervous. Returning was not without it's risks, but those were risks that the couple were willing to take.
