Chapter 39: Through the Mirror
Gustave took Bella to dinner that night and they had a splendid time.
They went out many times after that and throughly enjoyed each other's company.
After they had been dating for a few weeks, Gustave decided it was time for Bella to meet his family. He was incredibly nervous.
Bella was in an opera one weekend, and Gustave decided that after, he would lead her down to the catacombs, much like how his father did over twenty years ago. Only this time, there would be no Raoul, no one to come between them.
The family watched the opera from box five, which they now owned.
"She's quite talented," Erik remarked.
"And very beautiful. You have good taste, Gustave," Christine added.
"She's okay," Catherine shrugged. She still wasn't thrilled about her brother dating someone new. It wasn't that she didn't like Bella, it was that Catherine didn't want Gustave to get his heart broken again. Catherine knew how much Gustave cried when Celeste left him and how much more he cried when she passed away.
Catherine had read every single one of the letters that Celeste had written to Gustave. Gustave had only read a couple because they made him sad and he was trying to let the past just die.
Catherine missed Celeste. Not the Celeste that rejected her brother's marriage proposal only to marry a jerk, but the old Celeste who would always talk to Catherine and tell her how pretty she was. The old Celeste was so kind, so loving. Where had that person gone? She seemed so in love with Gustave. Why did she end things so abruptly and marry another guy soon after? The answers to these questions, the world may never know.
All that needed to be put behind her, though. Now Catherine needed to focus on Bella. Was she good enough to date Gustave? What was her story? Where was she from? Why did she love performing so much? Who were her parents? Catherine intended to find out the answers.
Erik, Christine, and Catherine left for the catacombs immediately after the show ended and Gustave went off to see his Prima Donna.
Bella was told that the mirror in her dressing room slid open and that they were going to enter the catacombs from there. She thought Gustave was joking.
Gustave knocked on the other side of the mirror, giving Bella a fright.
"Look at your face in the mirror. I am there inside," Gustave sang.
"Angel, I hear you! How do I open this thing, Gustave?" Bella asked.
Gustave slid open the mirror. "You don't. I do," he grinned. He led Bella by the hand through the many passageways and after fifteen minutes or so, they arrived in the main room.
"Welcome! Welcome!" Christine greeted. "You must be Bella."
"Yes, I am. You must be Madame Destler. It is so nice to finally meet you," Bella replied.
"Please, call me Christine. It is such a pleasure to meet you," Christine replied. She called her daughter over. "Bella, this is my daughter Catherine."
"Hello Catherine. That's such a pretty name. Does anybody call you Cath?" Bella asked.
"Only Gustave and sometimes my parents," Catherine replied.
"Could I call you Cath?"
"Sure."
Erik entered the room and was introduced to Bella. He immediately liked her.
The Destlers spent the rest of the evening getting to know Bella. She made a great first impression.
After the parents went to bed, Gustave had a talk with his sister.
"What do you think of Bella?" The older brother asked.
"I like her. She's really sweet. I approve of the two of you dating," Catherine decided.
"Oh, thank you, Cath. I was so worried that for whatever reason you wouldn't like her."
"She's easily likable. When do I get to meet Monique?"
"Maybe tomorrow."
