Chapter 36: Christine LeClair
Gustave ran immediately to Lucas's room and knocked on the door. "Lucas open up. It's Gustave. I need to talk to you!"
Lucas opened the door, his face still red with grief. "What?" He asked dejectedly.
"Were you aware you have a niece?"
"I have a what?" Lucas asked in astonishment.
"You have a niece. Her name is Christine LeClair. I think there's a chance she's still alive," Gustave replied.
It took days and many sleepless nights, but at last they located the young girl.
Lucas and Gustave left the next day for London. They needed to see the girl in person to make sure she was really Celeste's daughter.
Catherine begged Gustave to let her tag along, but he refused. He didn't want to be responsible for his sister in a foreign country.
"Gustave, I can't believe I'm about to meet my niece," Lucas exclaimed.
The two boys knocked on the door of the small house. The door was opened by a young girl who seemed to be in her mid twenties. "Can I help you?" The woman asked.
"Yes, we are looking for Christine LeClair," Lucas responded with a friendly smile.
"Come in," the woman said. "My husband is out with Christine, but they should be back any minute. My name is Anastasia. Anastasia Clinton. So, why is it that you wish to see Christine?"
"Who are her parents?" Lucas asked.
"Who are the two of you?" Anastasia questioned back.
"My name is Gustave Destler. This is my friend Lucas LeBlanc," Gustave replied.
"LeBlanc? Did you, by chance, have a sister named Celeste?"
"Yes I did, but she passed away," Lucas replied.
Just then, Anastasia's husband returned with Christine. "Darling, who are our guests?" The man asked his wife.
"Thomas, this is Gustave Destler and Lucas LeBlanc," Anastasia answered. She whispered, "Lucas is Celeste's brother."
Thomas shook hands with both men. "So, what brings you here?"
"Christine brings us here. I had to see her before I could say for sure, but she is my sister's child. I am her uncle. I've come to take her back to Paris with me," Lucas explained.
"No!" Anastasia exclaimed in a quiet, high-pitched voice.
"What was that?" Lucas asked.
"It's so wonderful that you came," Thomas interjected quickly. "We were good friends of Henri and Celeste. They asked us to take care of Christine while they were in Paris. When we got word that they had died, we made plans to adopt her, but if you are her blood relative, then she should live with you in Paris."
"Thank you. Thank you so much," Lucas exclaimed.
"Just promise us that you will treat her better than her father did," Anastasia said.
"What do you mean?" Lucas asked, confused.
The husband and wife exchanged glances.
"Henri was a terrible husband and a horrible father. He would often go to the local bar and was often drunk. He gambled, putting the family thousands of pounds in debt. He was an angry man and would say horrid things to his wife. He never spent any time with his daughter. I'm sorry to say that we weren't overly pained when we heard of his death," Thomas explained.
"That's awful," Gustave replied.
The Clintons packed Christine's things and said goodbye to the young girl.
The next day Christine, or Christy as they called her, returned to Paris with Gustave and Lucas.
"What are you going to do with Christy?" Gustave asked.
"I'm going to raise her. I'll make sure she knows about her parents. I'll tell her everything she wants to know," Lucas replied.
"Are you going to tell her about her father?"
"I'm going to tell her that he was a good man and that he loved her very much. It's not lying. He was -at one point- a good man and despite his wrong, I'm sure at least part of him did love her. I see no need to upset her."
"You're a good man, Lucas LeBlanc. You're a good man."
