Chapter 32: Sword Fight at the Cemetery

That night, Celeste joined the Destler family for dinner. Celeste enjoyed hearing Erik and Christine tell of how they fell in love. After dinner, Gustave took Celeste aside quietly. "I'm afraid I have to cancel our plans for tomorrow," Gustave said.

   "Oh no. Why?" She asked.

"I will be spending the day with Catherine. She said that she feels like I'm not there for her because I spend so much time with you, so I promised that tomorrow we would spend the entire day together."

Celeste admired the fact that he wanted to spend time with his younger sister. Not many brothers did.
The next day came, and Catherine ran into her brother's room. She jumped on top of her brother, who was still asleep, and shouted, "Gustave! Gustave! Wake up!"

Poor Gustave was scared half to death. "What? What happened? Are you dying? Who's hurt?" Gustave exclaimed.

"Nobody's hurt, silly. You promised we would spend the day together," Catherine reminded.

"So I did. What do you want to do first?"

"We should go visit Grandfather's grave."

The siblings got dressed and headed out to the cemetery. When they got there, Celeste was also there visiting her parents' graves. They could hear her singing, "Wishing you were somehow here again. Wishing you were somehow near..."

"Let's have some fun with Celeste," Gustave whispered. "Follow me!"

"...Help me say goodbye," Celeste finished singing.

"Wandering child, so lost, so helpless, yearning for my guidance," Gustave sang.

"Angel or father? Friend or phantom? Who is it there staring?" Celeste sang back.

"Have you forgotten your angel?" Gustave continued singing. "I am your Angel of Music. Come to me, Angel of Music."

Suddenly, Henri rode up on a white horse. "Celeste, wait! This man is not who you think he is," Henri warned, drawing his sword.

Gustave emerged slowly, Catherine in tow. Before a single word could be spoken, Henri swung his sword at Gustave. Gustave ducked just in time, the sword barely missing his head.
Gustave drew his own sword and lunged at Henri. Henri suffered a blow to the shoulder and was bleeding heavily. Henri lunged back at Gustave.
Catherine was in the way and nearly got hit when Gustave gave her a hard shove, sending her back a few steps. In doing so, Gustave fell to the ground. Henri kicked the sword away from Gustave and prepared to run him through.

"Henri, no!" Celeste exclaimed as she ran to Gustave's side. "I will not let you harm him!"

"He's never going to be able to provide for you the way I can. Come with me, Celeste. I promise, I won't walk out on you again. Things will be different this time," Henri vowed.

"No! I could never love you. You hurt me, Henri. You left me all those years ago and you hurt me. I will never forgive you for that," Celeste declared.

With that, Henri left. Never to be heard from again, or so they thought.

"This has shaped up to be an interesting morning," Catherine said once Henri had left. "What are we doing next?"

Gustave and Celeste looked at each other and giggled.

"Let's do something a little less exciting," Gustave suggested. "Let's go ice skating."

The siblings said goodbye to Celeste and went off ice skating as Gustave had suggested. The two had a joyous time together and returned home laughing heartily.

"Did you have a good time?" Christine asked.

"Oh, Mother! You won't believe what happened," Catherine continued to tell her mother of the exciting events that occurred.

"A sword fight, you say? That reminds me of something that happened to me years ago," Christine remembered.

That night, Gustave tucked Catherine in bed.

"Thank you for taking me out today, Gustave," the younger said

"It was my pleasure. I hope we can do it again sometime," Gustave replied. "Goodnight, Cath."

   "Goodnight, Gustave."

Gustave went back into the main room and sat down to discuss with his parents some future plans.

"There is a charming house down the street. It's of decent size and is reasonably priced. Celeste and I could live there. Then, I wouldn't be too far, and I would still be able to come spend time with Catherine. As for work, Celeste and I can get jobs here at the opera house," Gustave suggested.

"You've clearly given this a lot of thought," Erik commented.

   "I have."

Erik and Christine exchanged nervous glances. Erik shifted uncomfortably in his chair as he said, "Son, you have our blessing to ask Celeste to be your wife."
