Chapter 28: The New Arrival
Two months later, the time had come for Christine to give birth.
There was so much to be done and so little time to do it. Gustave grabbed their bags and the family quickly made their way to an apartment building on Main Street.
"Remind me, again, why we have to go to an apartment for Mother to have this child," Gustave asked his father.
"Because it would be too hard to explain to the doctor how to find his way through the catacombs," Erik explained.
Gustave grabbed his father's mask, handed to him, and then helped Christine into the carriage. "I'm about to become a brother," Gustave thought over and over.
Christine was tightly gripping Erik's hand as the rode to the apartment building.
"We'll be there soon, Angel," Erik reported.
"Why am I doing this?" Christine asked as she cried out in pain.
"Because you wanted more children," Erik reminded with a smile.
"Next time, do us both a favor and talk me out of it," Christine said before crying out in pain again. She gripped Erik's hand tighter.
Seeing his mother in pain made Gustave uncomfortable. He shifted in discomfort.
"When will we arrive at the apartment? I just want to get this thing out of me," Christine cried.
"We'll arrive at any moment, my love," Erik replied as he kissed her forehead.
They arrived at the apartment and after a few minutes, so did the doctor.
After several grueling hours on Christine's behalf, she was finally able to push. It was torture, but she endured the pain knowing that soon it would all be over and she would have her baby in her arms.
Christine cried out in pain again, gripping Erik's hand tightly. So tightly, that he was beginning to lose feeling in his hand. He didn't stop her though, for he knew that the pain she was enduring was much worse.
"You can do it, Christine. You're almost there," Erik reminded.
Gustave wasn't allowed in the room, but he could hear his mother's screams drifting down the hallway. Suddenly, Christine's screams were replaced by the sound of a wailing baby.
Erik wiped tears from his eyes as he saw his daughter's face. It had been so long since he shared a moment like this with his wife. For once, he had hoped that it wouldn't be the last.
The girl was carefully placed on Christine's chest. Christine couldn't have been happier. To her, her daughter was perfect.
Erik removed his mask the second the doctor left the room. Christine placed their daughter in his arms. Christine's tears of joy turned momentarily to tears of sadness as she said, "I'm sorry, Erik. She inherited it."
"I see," was his reply. Erik looked down at the baby in his arms. It was just as he feared, she too was deformed. "It's only her right ear that shares my twisted flesh," he added after a moment. He continued staring at his daughter as the tears ran down his face.
"I think we should name her Catherine," Christine suggested.
Catherine was the name that Erik had picked out months ago. Christine was more partial to the name Meg, but she thought it more fitting to go with the name Erik picked. Shortly, Christine peacefully drifted off to sleep.
"Hello, Catherine," Erik said, his voice barely a whisper. "I'm your father. You're going to go through some though things in life, but I promise I'll always be here to protect you. I'll never leave your side."
