Chapter 25: Gustave's Worries

Erik and Christine had been having many discussions involving the new baby lately. They had decided that if they had another boy, they would name him either Pierre or Benjamin and if they had a girl, they would name her either Meg or Catherine.
Erik was still constantly worrying about the baby and spent many sleepless nights praying that this child wouldn't inherit his deformity.
Gustave also worried about his sibling inheriting his father's deformity, but he didn't make this known to anyone. He knew that as an older brother he would have to protect his younger sibling. If the child was deformed, it would make it significantly harder due to the fact that the child would likely get picked on more often. Gustave was able to take his mind off his troubles by spending time with Lucas and Celeste.
One night, Gustave met Celeste on the rooftop. He told her of his concerns regarding his new sibling.

"I wouldn't worry. How bad could the deformity be? Your father's isn't even that bad," Celeste said.

"You and Lucas are the only people, besides my mother and I,  who didn't run away screaming when my father's mask was taken off," Gustave replied. "You're the only people who think that my father's deformity isn't bad."

"Really? That's quite sad," Celeste sighed. "Think of it this way: your sibling is going to have you to protect him or her. If you love them and show them that their deformity isn't what defines them, they'll be okay."

"I'm just afraid of how others will treat the child if it's deformed," Gustave explained. "I didn't sleep at all last night, because I was thinking about this matter."

"But, that's just it, Gustave. If the child is deformed. There is no guarantee that this baby will be inherit your father's deformity. You needn't worry so. Have hope, Gustave," Celeste replied.

"I suppose you are right. Thank you for lifting my spirits and giving me hope. I need to be reminded that things may turn out just fine every once in a while."

   "You are quite the pessimist."

Celeste kissed Gustave long and full on the lips. It was the most amazing feeling Gustave had ever felt.

"Celeste, I love you," Gustave said.

"I love you too, Gustave," Celeste replied.

Gustave returned to the catacombs, his head in a fog. "Did Celeste really just say she loves me?" He thought. He couldn't believe it. Unfortunately, Gustave's excitement was ephemeral, for as soon as he entered the main room of the lair, he saw his pregnant mother and his thoughts immediately turned to the baby. "What if my brother or sister is deformed? What am I going to do? How will I be able to protect them?" Gustave asked himself.

"Darling, you're back. How is Celeste?" Christine asked.

"She said she loves me," Gustave replied.

   "Do you love her?"

   "Yes."

   "And did you tell her?"

   "I did."

"That's a big step, Gustave. Do you really mean it? Do you really love her?" Christine questioned.

"Of course I do. I would never say something that I was going to just take back later," Gustave replied.

"Well, it sounds like you've had enough excitement for one day. Goodnight, my son," Christine said. She immediately went to go talk to Erik.

Erik was attempting to write a sequel to Don Juan Triumphant. The ideas were simply not coming to him and he threw his hands up in frustration. "Why did I think this was a good idea?" He asked himself aloud.

"Because you're you and you can't stop yourself from composing," Christine giggled. "Can I talk to you?"

"Please. I could use the distraction."

"Gustave told Celeste that loves her. Erik, I think their relationship is getting serious."

"He loves her? I'm not ready for this. I thought I was, but I'm not. Christine, what are we going to do about this? Are we going to let them stay together?"

"Of course we're letting them stay together. What other choice do we have? It's not like we can just go and off Celeste."

"Well, I do still have my Punjab lasso..."

"Erik, no. We aren't going to murder our son's girlfriend," Christine laughed.

"Well, at least we have a backup plan," Erik said with a slightly evil-looking grin.

"No. Absolutely not," Christine said, laughing harder. "Come, now. This is isn't the time for jokes."

"Sorry, dear," Erik apologized. He added after a moment, "What if they get married?"

"Oh, God. Don't say it, Erik. Purge your thoughts of the matter."

"I meant in the future, and it's not something I enjoy thinking about."

"I'm just worried he'll get his little heart broken."

"He's a Destler. We don't get our hearts broken. We do the heart breaking."

"So, you weren't at all heartbroken when I was going to leave with Raoul?"

"Did you really have to go there, Christine?"

"I'm just making a point, Angel."

"I wouldn't worry about Gustave. I'm sure that he'll be just fine. You should go to bed. You need your sleep," Erik said with affection.

"Only if you come with me," Christine said with a mischievous smile.

"You don't have to ask me twice."
