Chapter 12: Erik and Christine's First Anniversary
Erik had been planning this day for months. Everything was planned down to the last detail. He wanted everything to be perfect for Christine.
Erik had Meg make a cake. Not many people knew, but Meg was an exceptional baker and she was happy to provide assistance in any way she could.
The plan was for Erik to take Christine shopping to an expensive store and have her pick out a new outfit. Then, he was going to take her to dinner at an expensive restaurant. After, he would bring her home and give her a pair of diamond earrings, and Meg would bring out the cake.
When Christine awoke, there were two thousand red roses in her room. Christine got out of bed only to find a rose petal path leading out the door. She followed the path out the door, through the hallway, and down the stairs. The path led her into the kitchen, where Erik was slaving away over a hot stove, making her breakfast. Christine smiled. He did all of this for her. Erik didn't notice his wife at first. Instead of saying anything, Christine just stood there smiling.
"Good morning, Angel!" Erik greeted once he noticed Christine's presence. "Happy anniversary!"
"Happy anniversary, my love," Christine replied.
The couple ate together as Meg attended to Gustave. Afterward, Christine had to pay a visit to one of the shops in town, which gave Erik more time to set his plan in motion. He got everything done before his wife returned.
The night went exactly as Erik had planned. When he took Christine to the shop, she chose a becoming pink dress and heels to match. At dinner, the food was exquisite. The cake Meg had made was divine, and the diamond earrings were gorgeous.
"Erik this night has been perfect. You need not spoil me so," Christine commented.
Erik replied, "Christine, Angel of Music, this has been the best year of my life. Thank you for being my wife, my soulmate, and my reason for living." There were so many more things Erik could have said. He could have thanked Christine for not choosing Raoul, but he didn't want to spoil the happy occasion by bringing up him, as Raoul was a sore subject for the both of them.
"Erik, thank you for putting up with me and loving me and sticking with me through everything. I thank you not just for the past year, but for every single moment you have been in my life. I love you," Christine declared.
The couple spent the rest of the night conversing and reminiscing about their time at the Opera Populaire and of the times they had spent together.
Meg spent that night with Gustave. She was so deep in thought that when Gustave made a noise, she jumped.
"Don't scare me so, Gustave," Meg chided. "You're probably wondering what I've been thinking about all this time. Well, I'll tell you. I was thinking about how I'm a little jealous of your parents. I want what they have. I want someone to love me, despite my faults. I love Erik and Christine dearly, don't get me wrong. Sometimes I just wonder why I haven't found someone who loves me. What am I doing wrong, Gustave?" Meg sighed. "I guess I shall never know. Gustave, do me a favor and keep this conversation to yourself, okay? I don't want your parents to know that I'm secretly jealous of their relationship. In all honesty though, I really am glad that they found each other," Meg sighed again. "Well, it's time for you to go to sleep. Goodnight, darling child."
