Before

Kirstie woke to the smell of Esther's perfume and cold sheets.

She sighs and opens her eyes. The first thing she sees that day is Esther, already dressed and ready for the day. A small smile contorts her lips. "You look pretty today, Esther." She complimented groggily. "Just like you always do."

Esther raised an eyebrow. "You're awake. I was getting worried." She joked.

Kirstie stuck her tongue out at her. "Are you not going to acknowledge my compliment? No 'thank you?'"

Esther shook her head.

"Esther?" Kirstie says.

"Yes?" Esther replies.

"Where are we again?"

Esther gave Kirstie an exasperated look, but ended up laughing. "Atlanta." She replies, still chuckling.

"Oh, yeah..."

"You forgot where we were?" Esther asked.

"Hey, I just woke up," Kirstie countered. "My brain isn't at peak performance right now."

"Well it better be by tonight; you have a show." Esther reminds her. "I'm so excited for tonight's show. The venue I booked is gorgeous. It used to be a church, but it was renovated into a concert hall. You can still see organ pipes on the wall and they kept the fancy chandeliers. I'm so glad we managed to get a gig there."

Kirstie wasn't listening to Esther; she was too busy staring at her.

She wasn't kidding when she said that Esther looked pretty today. She had on a shimmery, frilly pink blouse with a quarter-sleeve jean jacket layered on top. She had on black leggings and some killer stiletto heels.

Then Kirstie looked at Esther's face, watching her as she gushed about the venue they would be playing at tonight.

Esther's eyes were bright and wide.

Since she wasn't listening, Kirstie wondered about what made Esther get so excited.

"Kirstie!" Esther sang, waving her hand in front of the blonde's face.

Kirstie blinked, shaking her head a bit. "I'm sorry, what? I was totally thinking of something else." How beautiful you are...

Esther sighed, shaking her head. "Just forget it. You'll see the venue today. Now, go get ready, Kirstin. We have a big day ahead of us."

Kirstie groaned loudly, burying her face in her pillow. "I don't wanna..." She whined.

Esther rolled her eyes. "I'm afraid you have to, Kirst."

Kirstie groaned again. She sat up and rubbed her eyes. She then stretched and yawned. She sighs and slowly gets out of bed. "Fine." She huffs.

Kirstie shuffled to the bathroom, lazily brushing her teeth.

"What should I wear today, Esther?" Kirstie called from the bathroom.

Kirstie waited for an answer, but she was only met with silence.

"Esther?" Kirstie called again, her mind quickly assuming the worst.

Kirstie slowly walked out and sighed in relief when she saw Esther curled up on the bed. Then she smiled.

I'll pick my own outfit today. She thought. Esther deserves some sleep.

Kirstie turned on her heel and began to rummage through her suitcase for today's outfit.

Esther didn't mean to fall asleep. She was just going to lie down for a bit, but dang, these beds are comfortable.

The last thing she heard before she drifted off to sleep was Kirstie calling her name.

~

Kirstie was doing her makeup when Esther woke up screaming.

Kirstie dropped her brush and ran to comfort Esther.

Esther was sobbing into the pillow.

Kirstie lied down in front of Esther, reaching to run her fingers across Esther's tear-stained cheek.

"Hey," Kirstie whispered. "It's okay, Esther. It was just a bad dream."

Kirstie began to sing softly, holding Esther close and running her fingers through her long hair.

Esther eventually calmed down.

"We need to go." She said, wiping away stray tears. "We're gonna be late."
