Chapter 4: Everyone's Job is in the Kitchen

A/N: If you've gotten this far, what the hell. Thank you :) This chapter's a bit of a filler. But hey, still useful. BTW; there might be a bunch of errors in this chapter, I didn't proofread it. Sorry.

I opened my eyes due to the light beaming through the window towards me. Today was the day. The day that my best friend would be leaving my side. And she's not even spending the whole day with me. Currently she's in New Jersey with her family. But she'll be back by this afternoon.

In the meantime, I'm just here laying on my bed and staring at the white pasty ceiling. What will I do once she's gone? I've never really had to face college without her. I ran into her during orientation, and totally hit it off. I mean who wouldn't? She's the perfect balance of crazy and sanity. I absolutely adore her. Ping

Good Morning Milady. -Max. He honestly didn't even have to sign that. I mean who else says that? I'm not gonna lie though. That totally made me smile.

Oh my, chivalry hasn't died. -V

Lmao. As long as I'm alive it won't be ;) Wanna hang? I'm bored. -Maxwell

Your name's Maxwell? Wtf. -V I send back. I see three dots appear, showing that he is typing something. It suddenly stops. Rude.

Before I could put my phone down Ring Ring Ring.

Of course it was Max. "Ello Darlin'"

"Hey Maxwell. What's up?"

"Firstly, I wish my name was Maxwell. But it ain't. So I'm like bored as fuck. Wanna meet up and work on that chemistry report due in a couple of days? We might as well get it over with."

"Haha, man you are soo needy."

"Only for you, babe. So what do you say?" I can just see him smirking.

"Yeah sure. Just tell me the where and when."

"I'll pick you up in thirty." And with that he hung up. Demanding.

I crawl out of bed. And trek through the messy room. It's almost as if a tornado had hit us. I take a quick shower and tie my hair up in a classic messy bun.

Ping

I'm outside your building, hurry up and come down. The doorman won't let me in.- Knight in shining armor.

Ite. -Not your damsel in distress, actually the troll. I smile and hit send.

I quickly grab my laptop and two protein bars and shove them into my messenger bag, and make my way down to the lobby.

Once I get to the lobby, I see Max chatting up the doorman. "I'm here, let's go." I tap Max's shoulder.

He turns around and flashes me a smile. "Yeah onesec. Could you first tell Eduardo I'm not some riff raft and that he'll be seeing me more often, so he should get used to me."

"Ma'am I genuinely thought he was some creep like the other ones. So is he on the okay list?" Eduardo asks.

"Oh it's no problem. Actually he is a creep, but he's on the okay list." From the corner of my eyes I can see max's jaw hanging.

"Got it. Have a good day, miss and creep." He waves at us.

Max gestures for me to follow, and I fall into his step. "So you've got creeps, huh?"

"Haha yeah, a story for another time though. So where are we headed?"

"My folk's place." We reach a Silver Acura MDX. A classic family vehicle.

"Isn't it too early for me to meet your folks? Oh and you could've warned me. I look like something the cat dragged in." I say as we get into the car.

"Oh you weren't dragged in by a cat? Shit, I didn't know. Was it a dog?" That earned him a punch "Oww. Abusive. But real talk though, nah. My family's actually in Peru for my Aunt's wedding. So it's just me and my brother."

"So you're a family man? That's cute." I giggle. Giggle? Wtf?

"BAHAH no. Actually Iwas renting out an apartment with my pal until last month until our sub-lease ended and the owners were back in town."

"Ohh gotcha." I grab the protein bars out of my bag and throw one at him.

"Can't you see I'm driving? Dear lord help us."

"Shut up and eat."

"Is that your breakfast?" He looks at me incredulously.

I nod my head in agreement. "And yours."

"Is this what you eat every day? You know how much sodium goes into preserving all of this shit? You're going to get high cholesterol and die woman!" He says as he throws the bar back at me.

"You're so dramatic, chill."

"Chill? Didn't you're parents teach you how to cook even the basics?"

Maybe if they were around more. "Eh, I'm not much of a chef. But yes, I can cook the basics!" I retort.

"If you say so." He says with a smirk all across his face. Truth be told, I wanted to wipe that smirk right off of his face.

"We're here! We're here!" He chants as he pulls up in front of a classic family house. You know, the one with red bricks, the one where parents came home to see their kids playing out in the drive way. That one.

He takes the keys out of the ignition and walks out. I follow right behind him. "This is such a lovely home." I say genuinely.

"From the outside yes, just wait until you see what's inside." He chuckles. "FELIX. ARE YOU HOMEEEEEE?" He calls out.

"Is that your brother?"

"No, it's my cat." What? Was that sarcasm?

"HAHA YOU'RE SO FUNNY. SIKE."

"No, I'm serious." He says as he comes out of another room with a fluffy ginger cat. "Vernie, this is Felix. Felix, Vernie."

MEOW.

"Meow to you too buddy. I seriously thought you were kidding though. Okay, so let's get started. Shall we?"

"We shall..after you cook breakfast. Because that protein bar was so not breakfast. And besides this gives you a chance to prove your worth."

"It is so, but you're right. I'm starving. Just show me where your kitchen is."

"Follow me" He winks. I follow him through a couple of picture filled hallways. "Voila."

"THIS IS YOUR KITCHEN?" I ask incredulously. "It's the size of my studio. The hell." It was seriously huge. It had marble tiles , countertops, and a huge island in the middle. Everything seemed state of the art.

"Haha, what can I say? My parents love to cook. When we first bought this house, it was half the size. But my parents weren't satisfied, so they renovated." He explains.

"Nice."

"So every ingredient you could possibly think of is here." He comes to me with an apron that has BIG MAX sewn on it in bold lettering.

"Cute." I say sarcastically and giggle.

"Mhm. Now turn around." I follow as instructed. He puts my head through it, and gingerly ties it. "Now get to it, woman!"

"Sexist. Just you wait."

"Haha. To be honest, It's not a woman's job to be in the kitchen. It's EVERYONE'S. I mean hello? Food?" He takes a seat at the island with Felix in his arms.

Okay, so I had to do this 'cooking thing'. To be honest, I had absolutely no idea how to cook. That was my housekeeper, Cheryl's job. Or at least up until college, then it was Annalise's job. But I wasn't going to admit that to Max. I mean I've seen them cook before, it can't be that hard. I'll figure something out.

I open the humongous stainless steel refrigerator and grabbed two eggs from the side door. I'll make some classy omelets. That should be easy to make. I'll make some toast as well. It'll be perfect. I'll blow him right out of the water. I look around for a pan, okay where could it be? Aha! It's on the wall.

About three burnt toasts, two broken eggs, and a half hour later I did it. I grabbed two plates and put one omelet and two pieces of toast in each plate. I topped each omelet with a mint leaf for aesthetic purposes. I go to the island to see max on his laptop with Felix.

"Gosh, I'm so sorry it took so long. It was hard getting adjusted to your kitchen." I lie straight through my teeth. "Thanks for getting started on the lab report though."

"Oh is it dinner time already? HAHAH." I just scowl at him. "Did you think I was working on the report? That's hilarious! I was actually on Buzzfeed. Any who, I'm starving."

"Good, because this is the best breakfast slash dinner you'll ever have." I say as I lay the plate in front of him. "I'll be right back, I'm going to go get some orange juice."

I pull out the carton of OJ and pour it into two glasses and walk back to the island to see Felix devouring the omelet. "Oh I forgot. I should've made one for him. Okay, wait here. I'll go make another omelet, oka-"

Max quickly strides over to me and says, "OH UH NO PROBLEM. IT'S REALLY OKAY. Trust me. I'm not that hungry."

"Shit, is it that bad?"

"Well, not bad. I mean Felix likes it, right?"

"He's a cat." I say with a straight face.

"Okay, so you need a little practice. It's okay. I'll teach you one day. But for now, let's just get some jam for the toast and work on the report, okay?"

"Sounds like a plan."
