We were nothing.
We were carried out from our mother country,
And put on this land to be a dustpan for the white man.
We were beaten,
For things that weren't our fault.
For things that didn't include us.
For things that we couldn't prevent.
They spat on our faces while we worked.
They broke our bones and told us to continue walking
They lied to us
And told us to keep thinking.
They executed us like expired animals,
And told us to keep breathing.
...
We were nothing.
Knowing this history,
How long did you expect us to sit down and wait?
How long did you expect us to continue being slaughtered for no reason?
Does envy have a problem with biology?
How we are made?
The way we talk and walk on the earth that doesn't discriminate?
I know my people are tired of fighting.
Everyday is a war-zone.
We have to put the AK-47 around our shoulders.
If we don't
Then how else will we feel protected?
The police doesn't do that.
They don't because they feel like they are God
So when power was implemented in those blue uniforms
They forgot how to be human.
...
We were nothing
And we still are in the eyes of the public.
They want to manipulate the language we use.
They want to portray us as threats to the government
They want to burn down our opportunities.
They want us to kill each other
Just so they can blame us for the actions we cause.
But not realizing,
That history is the reason that my people struggle up to this very day.
Therapy has not been presented to most of my people.
My grandmother is still reminiscent
Of times when she was beat
Ridiculed
Smirked
Gassed
Worked
Labored
Discriminated.
...
We were nothing.
They say the bad sleeps well,
So I wonder what pillow you use to put dormant
All the murders
All the uncivilized arrest
All the illegal warrants
All the shootings.
That you've caused.
Shoot a boy who's already in captivity.
Kill a man with a knee on his neck.
Take away a woman from this world with illegal access.
Beat a man senseless,
And not prosecute the killers with badges
Who are sworn to protect the citizens of this molded country!
Leave his body in the river,
So his mother can barely recognize him.
Drown him,
And forget about the incident!
How well do you demons really sleep at night!?
...
We were nothing,
But now my people have started to rise.
For generations,
We've killed
We've cursed
We've fought
We've bled
For our freedom.
Our skin color to be acceptable.
Our genuine smiles not to be suspected.
It shouldn't have gone this far,
For us to be human in the eyes of law.
But it has to.
The time for change starts now.
...
We were nothing,
But we will be something.
Something greater than the sun itself.
We will be a family of one.
Where all minds of blacks alike
Will dance under trees without a shadow.
Let our skin shine till the moon becomes obsolete.
Yes,
We will rise.
