No Clarity In That

I stood at the altar, in front of the royal family and other powerful families. I felt the sharpness and eagerness in their cold eyes. They only cared for their own. This was a little formal and I wasn't into it. Dark pillars framed the large doors and there were a good 50.

I blocked everything that was being said in my mind

.

.

" You're asking for a lot. But I will make an exception for you, Tristan."

I nodded, genuinely hugging her to me. " You don't understand what this means to me, Garnet."

She patted my shoulder " I know exactly what this means to you. I know what this means to the both of you." Katelyn hugged her tightly, slightly teary about the entire thing.

.

.

Duchess looked at me from the row to my left. She didn't know what was happening at all and maybe that was good. I looked back into the crowd and saw my siblings, looking very bored. They weren't happy about it at all. The tradition was once the heir was crowned, the siblings of the heir become their servants. I would never do it. My brother met my eyes " Aren't you happy?" He asked.

I looked to the floor " No." I whispered. Nothing was starting as of this moment. I walked off of the stage and beckoned for my siblings to follow suit. My room door slammed behind the three of us. I walked over to my desk and placed my hands over the wood, to ground myself. My nerves were frayed. I was on the fringe of losing sanity because of this... Because of everything. I suppressed all that I knew I was capable of and took in a deep breathe.

" Tristan." My brother said firmly " If there's something going on, you should tell us." I was quiet for a moment and only focused on breathing.

" Kaden... Roan... I'm scared." The stretch of silence was for as long as awkwardly possible. Nobody said anything.

I pushed my hair behind my ear " Guys... I don't want to be anything... And by that I mean anything like our father." I stopped for a moment " I'm not a merciless killer or strict ruler like him. But I'm not very fair either. I don't believe I'm fit to rule, much less be married to Duchess."

.

.

" Tristan, before you go, though I've been helping you, I haven't been fair to you." I turned to face her, confused." What do you mean, Garnet?" Her hands grasped the edges of her cropped gray long sleeve.

" Well..." She mumbled, " It's better if I show you." She almost froze, unmoving as her eyes rolled in the back of her head. There was nothing but whites exposed for a full minute until her eyes came back. Her eyes were chocolatey with golden flecks. She smiled a warm smile. Not like Garnet... This wasn't Garnet I was seeing anymore. But for some reason... I recognized who I was looking into the eyes of.

.

.

I could hear them going to sit down in the far corner of my room." Tristan, may I be a little invasive?" I nodded.

" You never used to be like this. You were kind, sure but there was a time where you were really heartless. I kinda blame this whole outburst of emotions on Katherine." She murmured, shrugging her shoulders. " So you're doing the exact same thing dad is-- trashing me for being in actual love."

" Well... Yes. This is the exact reason vampires refrain from actual love! This is why dad never truly loved mom and it's also why he doesn't love his current wife either."

I locked eyes with her " You are the spitting image of our mother and yet your words and actions are as disgusting as our dad. Why can't you be happy for me?" I growled angrily. Kaden looked very worried.

She rose and rolled her eyes at me " Because you forget: We aren't like humans and aren't meant to feel." She got up and left. I pinched the bridge of my nose and turned back around.
" Tristan-"

" If you want to leave too, just go." I muttered. He came to my side, looking at the floor. " No. Look... I get it. I understand that. I love someone that would never love me back, so I know what that's like. As far as you being an unfit ruler... I sort of disagree." He murmured, shrugging his shoulders " I think you'd be a cool leader. The marrying Duchess part is where my hands are tied. I couldn't help with that even if I tried."

.

.

She took very delicate steps toward me and stopped directly in front of me, with that gentle and relaxed smile. She pushed away the hair in my eyes and pushed it behind my ear.

" Tristan."

I stared at her in absolute shock, tears flooding my eyes. It all made sense.

" You've grown up. In less than a year and I couldn't be more proud of you. Before I go... I had to make sure the alliance was established before anything. I had to make sure this news didn't get out to the other witches or there would have been blood-shed for what  happened."

I shook my head " What do you mean? What even happened to you?" There was a stretch of silence." When your father discovered I was half-witch, he assaulted me and threw me in the dungeon, and... even saying that is putting it very lightly. I died a few days ago because my body perished. But Garnet has done nothing but help me since she heard my call for help. I know you want change but for that to happen, your father can not live. I was his wife and he left me to die. Just imagine what he'll do."

I was confused " Mom so wait, am I part witch? Kaden and Roan? "

She gave me a very plain look.

.

.

I nodded, agreeing with him.
" Garnet... Isn't a regular witch." Kaden looked a little thrown off by the quick change in direction.

" Explain."

I looked directly at him " Garnet let mom's spirit speak through her... Did you know she was in the dungeon? That she died just a few days ago?"

Kaden looked very uncomfortable " Vampires don't have spirits or souls... That means mom was a witch." He went silent for a while. I said nothing either.

I looked over at him as he rest his hand on mine. " I understand this implies that we are part mortal. But to what extent?"
.

.

.

.

She nodded. " Yes. But I have a task that may be hard... you have to win your brother over first. You're going to need him most." And just like that, Garnet collapsed. Katelyn rushed over to catch her and set her up on her bed.

.

.

We sat in silence. A knock came through the other side of the door. I saw her red hair before she even stepped in. She closed the door and studied the both of us. She felt the lingering tension and sat down in a chair. " What's wrong, guys?" She asked, confused. I felt something very wrong. Kaden wouldn't look at her or acknowledge her voice.

" Nothing. What's up?" Her eyes kept shifting, looking for something, but she stopped and met my eyes. " Um, your dad sent me to come and get you." She stood and pushed her hand through her hair. " The shit show is about to take place. "
