"Can't wait to get off this planet, can't even eat because of this helmet," I grumbled holding the food I'd taken at the memorial in my hands.
"Let's work on getting off this planet first," Astra joked as we stopped in front of Ambrose's door. As if awaiting our arrival the letter glowed once again and the door began to slide open.
"Come on in guys, I'm just changing my shirt but I should be right out!"
We let ourselves in and I used one of the napkins on Ambrose's desk to lay my food on, whilst Astra looked at things in the office more closely. She used her finger to thumb down the feather he had in a pot of ink on the table.
It was large and dark brown with a black tip, each bristle wide and intricately thin. "Is it just me or does this kind of look like a-
"Interested in my feather Tee? That's a shocker," Ambrose sauntered in, "You always wanted me to get rid of it."
"I was never really fond of it," Astra admitted quietly, her face still pointed at the feather.
"Yeah well, it's one of my favorite things in this office," He picked it up, twirling it between his fingers. "I always thought we should've all gotten one."
I eyed the feather as he raised it more to the light, making bile rise up my throat. He didn't.
"Anyways I called you guys here because I wanted to give you a heads up on our guests that you'll be meeting soon," He clasped his hands together, "I told you this moving to Mars thing was a great idea, Humankind has never been this close to the stars I tell you, this is huge for our people and to think they approached me, Me! For help, you're going to be blown away, Kofi."
"Want to give me any hints?" I suggested, feeling kind of curious about who would have him so excited.
"I called them here an hour ago so they should be on their way-" He got distracted by the treats I was holding in the napkins. "Are these from the memorial thing?" He grabbed the one I was looking forward to the most and threw it in his mouth, "Oh that's good."
Astra stayed quiet, her eyes still trained on the desk. "Oh that's really good," Ambrose moaned, as he went around his desk to take a seat, "I know exactly who'd love this, aye Leo!"
The sound of rushing water was heard and a door that I had previously not known was there opened up to reveal Connie's twin. His eyes narrowed when he saw us, "What are they doing here?" He nearly snarled, looking almost wary of us.
"Relax Leo I called them here," Ambrose turned to us, "Right Kofi."
"Yes Leo, we were invited."
Astra broke her trance to look at the new person in the room, "Hi Leo."
He ignored her, his rage shifting to Ambrose, "We talked about this, why would you bring them here right now?"
Ambrose waved him off, "Yes I heard you but you can't seriously think I was going to introduce the guests without them being here? C'mon Leo," He pats his back, "And besides, Kofi's practically the brightest on the planet, he even gave me an idea of what's wrong with the cameras."
"Did he," Leo replied, his face unbelieving.
"Yes, I'll tell you all about it once I get the engineers on the line. It's not a very good day to do it, we're all mourning your sister you know?" Mention of Connie had Leo's back stiffening and he clenched his teeth looking down. "Speaking of your sister, Kofi got these from the funeral. They're really good you should try one."
You would've thought he'd just offered him a plate of live grenades.
Leo's face slowly fell onto the bowl filled with treats and even slower did he lift his head to look back at me. "Who are you?"
The room was silent and even Ambrose's charming smile didn't ease the tension. "What?" I asked.
"What have you done with Kofi Mhklali," He spoke lowly, "And I thought you would've noticed," He was now speaking to Astra, "Unless of course, you're not Teegan Callahaway."
"Lionel, we talked about this, you said you wouldn't-
"They're lying and they've been lying since that day in the cafeteria," He tilted his head, "Kofi has never gone on diets."
"Oh its a crime to try new things?" I asked, my fist clenching as sweat ran down my forehead.
"He doesn't believe in diets, thinks it's stupid to not eat in a balanced way. You know what else Kofi doesn't believe in?" He questioned, "Nicknames, he calls us all by our full names. Even Teegan because he thinks pet names are fucking stupid."
Astra took a step back, "If you want us to go we can leave Leo, I can see your sister-
"Don't!" He took a deep breath to compose himself, "Don't talk about my sister, especially because I saw on the CCTV fottage that she was last seen entering," His finger found me, "Your office!"
I snorted, "You think I killed Constance."
"I think you should remove your helmet."
Ambrose spoke up for us again, "I think the tension in this room in unnecessary and we should really think about our actions before we-
Leo's hand found his waist and in the next split second I was staring at the mouth of a gun, "If you don't remove your helmet I'm about to make 'Teegan' over here, a widow."
Ambrose rose to his feet, "Lionel, I will call security in here, put the gun away."
"Call whoever you feel like calling, just know that when they get here, it will just be the two of us because I will not allow whoever the fuck these people are to continue prancing around here taking lives," He promised, turning off the safety of the gun, "Now take off your fucking helmet."
Ambrose rushed to the other side of the room and unlatched one of the phones from the wall to begin calling whoever was on there. So the room was filled with silence except for the whiny blonde in the corner that was speaking very quickly as he called for help.
Whoever he was claling would not arrive in time.
I wish I could see Astra's face, gauge what she was thinking or even make a plan with her with our eyes. But we were both facing forward and I could only stare at the back of her head as I lifted a shaky hand to tap the side of my helmet.
"Some shitty actor you are, Kofi doesn't even eat fucking pastries," He kicked the food off the table and I flinched as it fell by my feet, "He doens't like the way the crumbs go everywhere," Leo taunted us, rounding the table to get a better shot at my head, 'Now take it off!"
I tapped the helmet and a gunshot went off but Astra was faster with lunging for his wrist and taking the gun out of his hands like I'd shown her how to. The bullet ricochet off the floor and I was quick to send a punch to Leo's face, making him drop the gun into Astra's hand whilst I struggled with restraining him.
The sound of Ambrose talking had come to a stop and I could feel his eyes on me as I pressed Leo into the ground with his face, my lower hands bursting from the confinements of the suit so i could hold his arms together too. He wriggled around a bit until Astra knelt to push the barrel of the gun into the side of his head.
She tapped the side of her head and the sound of her helmet hitting the ground was followed by Ambrose's gasp. "You're lucky you're not the one we want."
I held both of his hands with my left lower one and my right to keep his head still whilst I fixed my hair. "Your sister fought harder," I told him before knocking him out with my fist.
The sound of wheezing and choking caught our attention and Astra was quick to swing the gun in the direction of Ambrose who was now on his knees scratching at this throat as his whole face began to turn red. When seeing we were now look at him he began to crawl away from us vigorously, holding a defensive hand out to us.
"Is he faking that?" I asked quietly.
Astra tilted her head, "I can't actually tell."
Regardless of what we thought he continued to pretend as if he was about to throw up a lung, his whole body heaving as he went back to clawing at his flesh. We approached him, making panic fill his eyes which only made him cough harder.
"Is he choking or something?"
"Please, please!" He whimpered as he exploded into more coughs, "Help me, please help me!"
I turned my eyes away from the pathetic sight and instead looked at the keypad and phone he was using earlier. The phone was now dangling but the keypad continued to flash green over and over and I leaned in to read it.
E S C A P E R O O M.
I frowned, noticing he hadn't filled in the last number. "What's the last part of the key?" I thought out loud.
"Sol what did you give him?" Astra asked me quietly, her eyes trained on the dying man.
"Please, please help me."
I didn't think to much of it, "Nothing that would kill him thats for sure." I searched my mind for a number that he would've used to finish of the passcode. Ambrose was a simple guy, a very dumn one.
"No but what was it?"
Ambrose began crawlingg to his desk, still wheezing, "Please my pen, please!"
"In his last moments he wants the stupid feather?"
Ambrose's hand failed to reach his desk and Astra walked ahead of him, she dropped the gun and held up his face before sniffing it. "Peanut butter."
"Is that some sort of poison?" I asked slightly intrugued by his reaction and the way his face was slowly starting to turn all blue.
"Not normally," She assessed his face, "Lucky for him he happens to be allergic."
My eyebrows raised, "So what now?"
Little painful and desperate attempts to breathe still left Ambrose's mouth as Astra held his jaw tightly in her hand. "Look at you," She muttered, "Can you feel that? You're dying," She told him almost sorrrowfully, "You didn't get the life you deserved and now you won't die in a deserving way either," She patted his cheek before dropping his face all together, "You've lived like a God all you life, and now you shall die a humilating death and your last breath will remind you what you always seemed to forget. You're just a man."
We left him on the floor as we rose to our feet, "Can you hear that?" I asked.
Stopping for a second the sound of frantic pounding reached our ears and we rushed to Ambrose's door to be met with the sound of people calling his name and slamming their hands against it. "He actually managed to call for help," I commented.
Astra looked slightly more worried than me, "I'm just surprised this door hasn't caved."
"There's another exit, Ambrose was going to use it before he...you know but it needs a code."
I led her back to the escape room passkey and she eyed it forr a second before pushing a button and the whole thing flashed white and a door was revealed. "How did you know?"
"It's Tempest's tag, they were on her wings."
