Words That Cut Like Knives

~Mello's POV~

I walked out of the room with Matt, confused as to why he wanted me to come outside with him. We left the hospital and stood just outside. He pulled out a pack of cigarettes and lit one. "Want one?" He asked, but I shook my head no.

"What's wrong, Matt?" I asked.

"Listen, I know you probably don't wanna hear this from me," He said. "But you better take care of this baby, alright?"

"Matt, what're you-?" I began.

"When you left Wammy's without {Y/N}, it took a major toll on her. If you leave again, she'll break down. It's not just about you anymore. It's about Lawliet, too. And I know you really don't wanna hear this, Mello, but you're not who you used to be. You can't just go beat the fuck out of someone and then act like it's okay. Now you have a son... And now your whole life is gonna change."

"Matt. Do you think I don't already know this? I fully know what I've got to do; I have different priorities now. I have no intention of leaving {Y/N}. Seeing her drugged and passed out in that bathtub 3 years ago... It made me realize that our existence depends on one another. I already promised {Y/N} that Lawliet's gonna have a much better life than what we had. No orphanage, no institute, no mafia. None of that."

"I hope you keep to those promises. Because Mello... If you betray us, I'll kill you myself. I love {Y/N}. She's like a sister to me. And like a brother... I'm going to protect her, and her child. And if that means I have to go against you... So be it." Matt said.

That was probably the first time I'd seen Matt that serious. He'd always been the protective type, but not against me. He had never really threatened me this badly before, and so I took this seriously. "Matt," I said. "I'm not going to break my promises. But... There's something I want to ask you."

"What is it, Mello?"

"Why are you saying all of this now?" I questioned, and Matt looked reluctant to tell me. But of course, he did.

"Well, to put it simply, {Y/N} is infatuated with you. It's easy to tell. While you're working, she devotedly waits for you to get home; almost like a dog. When her water broke, the first thing she told me to do wasn't to call the ambulance. It was to call you. I scolded her and called the ambulance first, but when they got there, she refused to be taken away without me calling you. So I went with her and promised to call once we got here; which I kept by. But when it comes to {Y/N}... I don't find that you're like that. And I realized that today. You're not as in love with her as she is with you. Why is that?"

I didn't know what to say. Really, what Matt was saying wasn't true. In fact, he couldn't have been any more wrong. {Y/N} had my complete love; the only people that had and ever would share my heart would be {Y/N}, Lawliet, and if we had any other kids, they'd be there too. But still, what Matt had said felt like a slap in the face. "Matt, what're you even saying?"

"I'm saying that you don't love {Y/N} as much as she loves you. I've noticed it. And I could be wrong, I could be, but in all honesty, Mel, I think I'm right."

I grit my teeth. "Well, you're not, Matt." I said, storming back into the building, leaving Matt to smoke his cigarette alone.

I was pissed off, but as soon as I was outside of the door where {Y/N} was, I faked a smile and went inside. {Y/N} was sitting there, but Lawliet wasn't in her arms. "Where's Law?" I asked, and she smiled.

"The nurse took him for a bath in the nursery. And 'Law', Mello? Seriously?" She said.

"What?! It's just something I came up with on the spot." I shrugged, sitting at the edge of the bed.

"What's wrong?" She asked immediately.

I blinked in shock. She'd seen through me already. "Eh?"

"I said, 'What's wrong'? What's with the fake ass smile?"

I looked away and stayed quiet. But then {Y/N} sat up and pulled my face back towards hers. "Mello." She said boldly. "Tell me what's wrong."

"Matt and I just got into an argument, is all." I lied. Well, it wasn't a lie, but it wasn't the full truth, either.

{Y/N} smiled at me. "Don't worry about it; Matt's just had a rough day. He's probably just in need of some fresh air or something. He probably didn't mean whatever it was what he said."

I hope so.

"Y-yeah..." I muttered. All of a sudden, Matt's words began echoing in my head, and I hugged {Y/N}, kissing her cheek. "You know that I love you, right?"

"Yeah, I know. I love you, too. Why, is everything alright?"

"I just wanted to say it." I lied again. She can't find out. If I told her what Matt had said, she'd be so upset. Not just at me, but at Matt as well. He was out of place.

And speak of the Devil, Matt came back inside with Mina, who ran up to {Y/N} and hugged her. "CONGRATS!!" She yelled, "I'm so sorry that I couldn't be here on time!!"

{Y/N} laughed. "It's okay, it's okay. Your nephew is the nursery; the nurse should be back with him any minute now."

"So..." Mina said excitedly, "Are you gonna have any more...?"

{Y/N} blushed and looked at me, who did the same to her. "Well," I said, "We haven't really talked about it yet, but if {Y/N} wants to, it's her choice. I'm gonna support her every decision, as long as it's not going to get her killed."

"Mello..." She muttered, giving me a touched look. "R-really?"

I smiled. "Of course. We're a team now. Well, more of a team." I corrected myself. We've always been a team, since we met. It's been the two of us against the world.

The nurse came back with Lawliet, and Mina squealed. "He's so adorable!! He looks just like Mello and you!" She said, and the nurse gave him to her.

Matt hit his forehead and sighed. {Y/N} giggled and glanced at me, blushing. Lawliet really looked like our perfect combination. And with that thought, I thought of what Matt had said again. Am I really not completely in love with {Y/N}? No, that's not true. I love her. A lot. But... Does she know it?

"Mello? What's wrong?" {Y/N} asked, and I shook off my train of thought.

"Ah, nothing. Everything's fine." I rushed.

As soon as Matt looked at me, he nudged Mina. "Let's get going." He told her and then saluted, his way of saying goodbye.

Mina pouted at Matt but followed him, giving Lawliet to {Y/N}. As soon as they'd left, {Y/N} glared at me. "What is it? Don't lie to me. Something's wrong."

I sighed. "Nothing's wrong. Matt just... Said something a bit over the line."

"What'd he say?"

"Nothing." I lied.

"Mello." {Y/N} scolded. "I'm your girlfriend. Tell me what happened."

"Okay, fine! He said that I don't love you like how you love me! Which got me thinking; what if you don't get that I love you, which I do!! I love you so, so much!" I yelled, my emotions bursting out.

She stared at me with wide eyes. "Matt said that? What the actual fuck?!" She motioned for me to pass her the cell phone she always carried, and when I did, she angrily unlocked it and went to the phone app. "I'm gonna call him and give him a piece of my fucking mind..."

"Wait!" I yelled, taking the phone. She glared at me.

"Don't defend him, Mello! Give me back the fucking phone!!"

"No." I said. "It's okay. He was just voicing his concerns; there's nothing wrong with that."

"Mello. The fact that he had the nerve to tell you this the day our child was born is already bullshit. The fact that he doesn't think that you love me, is another. Matt had no fucking right to say any of that!!"

"{Y/N}, calm down." I attempted. "It's okay, I'm fine. I think I just had to tell you what happened. I'm fine now. Really."

She gave me a hesitant look, but then sighed. "You sure, Mel? 'Cause I have no problem calling Matt and telling him off. Putting him in his place is what I do best."

I shook my head in dismissal. "It's fine, really! Besides, both of us, especially you, should be relaxing. You just had a baby. Aren't you tired?"

She shrugged. "A little bit, I guess. I don't know."

I raised my eyebrow. She looked tired. "You should take a rest." I coaxed. "It's late, and you've had a long day. I'll call the nurse so she can put Law in the nursery."

Surprisingly, {Y/N} didn't resist. She nodded as I pressed the call button. Within minutes, the nurse came in and took Lawliet. When she left, I kissed {Y/N} on the forehead. "I'm gonna go home for now, alright? I'll be back first thing in the morning. I promise."

She yawned and then smiled. "Love you, Mello."

I ruffled her hair. "Love you, too. Bye." I said, going out the door and heading back to the exit, where I found my motorcycle and went home.

When I got home, I went inside to see Matt standing there, his arms crossed. "Did you tell her what we talked about?"

I clicked my tongue in annoyance. "Yeah. She wanted to kill you."

"Well, did she say anything?"

"Say anything? Yeah, she wanted to call you and tell you off. She couldn't believe you had said that to me."

"{Y/N} doesn't understand why I said it? Well, I guess I hadn't said anything to her, so she wouldn't get it. But really, Mello, is what I said true?"

I rolled my eyes. "Of course not, Matt. You know me, I'm a proud guy. I don't show my soft side that often. I still love {Y/N}, and she damn well knows it, too."

Matt smiled. "See? I was looking for that, you shit!"

I looked at him, confused. "Matt, what on earth are you talking about?"

Matt tapped the collar of his shirt. "Built-in cameras. Recorded that. For when you two get married~!"

I grit my teeth. "So, you asshole, you had me suffer all evening just so you could hear me say that?"

"Pretty much. You see, it's been almost a year since you two have been a couple, right?"

I nodded cautiously. "Yeah..."

Matt sighed and then grinned. "Don't get all mushy over this, but Mina and I wanted to give you a little something for your 'anniversary', so we're working on a little project. Can't tell you anything more than that, alright? So whatever I said earlier today, it was just provocative talk. I didn't mean anything."

I hit him on the shoulder but then smiled. "It's alright, Matty. Thanks, you asshole."

"Hey, Mina was the one to come up with the idea. I didn't plan on doing shit. She made me do it!!"

I ruffled Matt's hair and went upstairs. Thank God, I was right.

I sighed and laid down on the bed. Without {Y/N}, it was quite lonely, but I managed to fall asleep. And it felt peaceful, that night. Not because she wasn't snoring away beside me, but because now I knew if something, God forbid, happened to me and Matt, I wouldn't leave her alone.
