Chapter 51 - What Is Real?
Spiraling, spiraling downwards. Tumbling through the air, Gabriel was falling towards an empty void. He wanted to scream but he could not muster even the smallest noise. And so he kept falling. As he fell further and further, the middle aged man saw flashes of his life fly by. His friends and family, his childhood memories. It was all there. The day he rode his first bike, the day where he helped the neighborhood's stray dog, the day where he graduated from Unity Environmental University.
The day where he was hired by Playtime Co.
Gabriel finally hit the ground with a thud. Strangely enough, he didn't feel any pain. Was he dreaming? Was he dead? The man couldn't tell anymore. Slowly getting up to his feet, he looked around. He was on the old road that led right to Playtime Co. Even with all of the trees surrounding him, he could spot the factory's smokestacks in the distance.
"Find the flower... find the flower..." Poppy's hushed voice blew in with the breeze. The old road and the surrounding woods disappeared into a swirling vortex of the Red Smoke. His head spinning at this point, Gabriel found himself in the main lobby. He was by himself and yet he could still hear Poppy speaking, "This isn't a place you come back from. Do you have any idea what you're doing?"
The scene changed again. Gabriel was now in Home Sweet Home. Again, he was alone. But this time he could see people, sort of. They were the shadowy forms of children, the orphans who lived in Home Sweet Home. Their laughter filled the hallway, almost drowning out Poppy, "Do you know what's happened here?" Another scene change brought Gabriel into one of the classrooms at the school. More shadowy figures and Poppy spoke once more, "Do you know who we once were?"
"What the frick is going on here?" Gabriel rasped, finally finding his voice. He had so many questions. He wasn't getting any answers though as he was now transferred into the middle of Playhouse. The shadow children were running around, laughing and having a good old time. "Do you see why we have to end this?" Poppy's voice questioned, her words laced with poison. It was at this moment that Gabriel was frantically looking around for an exit that didn't exist. "I don't like this," he mumbled, "I don't like this!"
"Do you even know what's real?" Poppy asked, still unseen as everything around Gabriel faded to black. Crashing down on his knees, the middle aged man slammed his hands onto whatever ground he was on. "No I don't, Poppy! I don't know!" he shouted. Squeezing his eyes shut, he yelled, "So why don't you tell me why I'm even here?!"
"Oh, you know very well why Doctor Lopez..." a new voice hissed. Gabriel froze when he heard it. He didn't know this voice, not at all. Lifting his gaze, he discovered a pair of glowing eyes glaring down at him. "Who... are... you..." the man stuttered, trembling. He couldn't see the body of this stranger, just the glowing eyes only. Said eyes blinked once before the mystery voice spoke again, "The real question here is WHO ARE YOU TRYING TO BE?"
"What..." Gabriel mumbled, confused. All of the sudden, he was blown back by a huge gust of wind. Sprawled out on his back, he rolled over onto his stomach and looked up. Hundreds of white eyes looked down upon him, each belonging to various toys. Gabriel could make out PJ and Bunzo Bunny among them. "Do you feel bad for them?" the voice snarled, "Do you want to take away their pain?"
Something smashed against the ground beside Gabriel. Jumping, he turned and saw Barb embedded into the glass like floor he was on. Shards of glass littered the area now, threatening to slice and cut. Laying not too far away was Miss Delight. She was on her back, staring upwards. The teacher turned her head so fast her neck snapped. Gabriel's heart raced as he stared at her damaged face. It was more grotesque now as blood leaked out from her gaping mouth and eyes. "Stop this," the man pleaded, "Please make this stop."
"So you do feel bad for them! How lovely," the voice sneered. A harsh force pushed Gabriel forwards, slamming his face into the glass shards. There was no pain though as he was shoved through the floor. A portal if you will. Flipped over onto his back on the other side, the middle aged man gasped for air. He felt like he was underwater and yet he was not. Sitting up, he had the horrible feeling he was being watched. And indeed he was.
"LoOk At ThEm FoOl!" the voice boomed in a commanding tone. Within the blink of an eye, Gabriel was spun around. He stood facing two gigantic figures with eyes glowing with hunger. One was Mommy Long Legs, her stretchy arms reaching out for him. The second creature behind her stayed hidden in the shadows but Gabriel could tell it had a bulkier build with long limbs. Perhaps it was Big Brother? "DO THEY LOOK LIKE THE KIDS THEY ONCE WERE?!" the stranger barked, "No! They are simple projects now, hungry for flesh! They do not need you or any other human ever again!"
"They're still just kids..." Gabriel rasped, trembling in fear as he felt Mommy and Big Brother's eyes burn into his soul. He was suddenly spun around again. This time, he was seated in front of Catnap and Dogday. The pair had their backs to each other and their smiling faces were replaced with scowls. "They don't even trust each other," the voice commented in a snarky tone, "Why should they trust YOU?"
"I... I don't know..." Gabriel whimpered. He covered his face with his hands. He didn't wish to see any more of this devilish nightmare. "Is the guilt getting to you? No, how could it? You didn't create us," the stranger lectured the human, the sound changing into different voices. Gabriel shuddered as he felt the mysterious speaker circle him. "You Had No rEasOn tO reTurN," the voice spat, "And yet, here you are. You were summoned to find old staff. But is that really why you're here? Maybe, just maybe, you've come to see HIM."
"Stop... please..." Gabriel begged. His pleads fell on deaf ears as the stranger's voice gained volume, "SO WE ASK YOU AGAIN DOCTOR. DO YOU EVEN KNOW WHAT IS REAL?" There was a moment of silence. Daring to look, Gabriel uncovered his eyes and spied two yellow felted feet standing in front of him. Tipping his head back, the middle aged man met the eyes of the big blue giant himself, Huggy Wuggy. At the same time, Poppy spoke again.
"No, you don't."
Alarms rang out and red lights flashed. Then came the shrill screams of terror from men and women alike. Covering his ears, Gabriel's eyes darted around the room. He was in the room with the Huggy Wuggy display. He couldn't see any other people but he could hear their screams echoing in the halls. Glancing up, his blood ran cold when he saw a huge skeletal hand reaching out for him.
The Prototype.
