Chapter 5 - Make A Friend
"There we go, perfect fit," Gabriel murmured to himself as he finished attaching the red hand to the right arm cannon on the Grabpack. The equipment was now fully functional. But now what was he supposed to do? Gabriel couldn't help but realize he had asked himself that question one too many times now. Seriously, what was he doing here? What was his mission?!
Sighing heavily, Gabriel leaned back against a box. He needed to go home, that's what he needed. Standing upright again, he was about to walk away when a small noise caught his attention. Whirling around, he shined his phone's flashlight. Whatever made the noise was long gone though. It sounded like it came from the vents though. With the stupidity of any generic protagonist in a horror movie, the middle aged man approached the dark crawl space. There was nothing there when he flashed his light inside. But his gut told him something was there.
His gut was also saying go home but who cares about that?
"I'm gonna regret this..." Gabriel muttered under his breath. Regardless, he climbed into the vent and started crawling through. With every step he took forward, his terror level increased. His heart pounded loudly in his chest, threatening to explode at any point. He almost jumped out of his skin when a bunch of toy parts landed on him. And yet he kept going until he reached the end of the line and entered a large room with a huge machine with eyes.
"What in the world..." Gabriel murmured. His eyes never once strayed from the machine laying before him. Noticing a sign in front of it, he warily approached it. Looking down, he began to read aloud, "Our founder, Elliot Ludwig, was a visionary. He set the stage for all of Playtime Co.'s greatest feats. Yet of all the amazing things that he had created, the Make-a-Friend Machine is one of the most creative, impressive and advanced. It is solely responsible for nearly every Playtime Co. toy sold on the market to this day. All it needs is to be fed the proper parts, and it will then paint, assemble and do a quality inspection of the toy all on its own. Gone is the need for complex sorting or back breaking labor. This machine can do all of that and more."
The sound of something falling over caused Gabriel to whirl around. But there was nothing there. He didn't even see what could've possibly fallen over. His nerves were jumping all over the place though. He needed to get out of here! Spotting a door, the middle aged man ran over and tried opening it. No luck. A sign next to it stated that nobody leaves without a toy. A scanner sat beneath the sign. Staring at the sign in disbelief, Gabriel grumbled, "Are you serious?!"
The plan was simple. Make a toy and leave. That's just great. Would there even be enough power to the machine? Gabriel didn't know nor did he really care at this point. He wanted to go home now. Marching over to the control panel for the Make-a-Friend Machine, he pressed the start button.
The eyes of the mechanism blinked open and stared at Gabriel. The middle aged man cringed under its intense gaze. In the meantime, the air filled with the hum of machinery once more. So far, so good. There was surprisingly still power in this abandoned toy factory. Shaking off his nerves, Gabriel watched as the Make-a-Friend Machine assembled a Catbee toy before rolling the item out on a conveyor belt. With that, the mechanical sounds ceased.
"Good thing there was enough power..." Gabriel murmured under his breath. Approaching the conveyor belt, he plucked the Catbee toy off and held it up for a closer look. The toy was immaculate! It was astonishing honestly. Perhaps a nice souvenir, despite how badly Gabriel wanted to forget about this wretched factory. Walking up to the door, the middle aged man set Catbee on the scanner. The toy disappeared in an enclosed vacuum and the door opened, leaving Gabriel empty handed. "Hold on a god dang second," he grumbled, "I thought nobody leaves without a toy!"
Slightly upset about the loss of his toy companion, Gabriel entered the hallway beyond the door. There were two other doors. Jiggling the handles proved they were locked. "Wonder where they go..." Gabriel murmured to himself after testing the first door. Turning to the second, he read the sign next to it, "Hm, stairway to he- wait." Staring at the crudely written word below, the middle aged man hummed to himself and mumbled, "Okay! Hope that was written after this place shut down."
With the two doors with questionable locations locked, Gabriel was left with no other choice but to embrace the dark hallway before him. He didn't really want to but it probably was his only exit. "Why am I even worried? I don't live in a horror movie," he reassured himself. He took one step forward just as something huge stepped forth from the darkness.
It was Huggy Wuggy.
