Chapter 46 - Cute Little Gremlins
Darkness blanketed Gabriel immediately. He could barely see his own hand in front of his face. Digging out his phone, the middle aged man turned on the flashlight feature. With the room now illuminated, he could breathe a huge sigh of relief. The tranquility didn't last long though when his phone battery died, casting him back to darkness.
A small scratching noise could be heard.
"Crap crap crap crap crap..." Gabriel hissed repeatedly, fumbling around in the dark as he changed hands. Acquiring the new orange flare gun, he swiftly fired a flare to his right. Just in the nick of time too as a small Smiling Critter plush backed away whimpering. Based on the color, he figured it must've been Bobby Bearhug the red bear. Taking a moment to gather his composure in the dimming light of the flare, Gabriel stiffened when he heard more scratches.
Oh my god he was surrounded.
"This can not be happening," Gabriel growled under his breath. He glanced over at his flare counter. Five. He was fully loaded. He needed to make each one count. Hearing small footsteps on his left, the man quickly fired in that direction. Two Smiling Critters fled the scene, clearing a path to a hallway. Not wasting a second, Gabriel bolted.
More scratching, more quick footsteps. Gabriel was firing flares left and right, keeping the little gremlins away. Funny, he remembered when he first saw these plushies. He remembered thinking that they were super cute. Ain't so cute now, not with them chasing him down with the intent to turn him into chow. Leaping over a squirming pile of critters, Gabriel jumped up and grabbed an overhanging beam. Pulling himself up, he carefully walked along while swarms of Smiling Critters gathered below. Yeah, not creepy at all.
Making it across the beam, Gabriel allowed himself to slow down. He needed time to catch his breath. After all, he had been running for his life for several hours now. Walking along a dark hallway, the middle aged man found himself in a strange area. If he had to guess, it was someone's sleeping quarters. The little room had water, pillows and blankets. Heck, there was even a giant cushion crammed in the corner. Looking at that, Gabriel realized that it reminded him of a cat bed.
This was where Catnap slept.
Gabriel backed away slowly. He was not having any part of that. Leaving Catnap's bedroom behind, he walked down the new hallway he had come across. With iron bars on either side, he thought he was walking down an aisle in a prison. "Why would this be in a playhouse meant for kids?" he wondered aloud, "This doesn't make any sense-"
"You!" a male voice interrupted Gabriel, "You're Poppy's angel!"
