Chapter 34 - Hallucinations

How long is this hallway? I feel like I've been walking down here for ages, Gabriel thought to himself. It was true, every word. He felt lost, trapped within a never-ending maze. The hallway he was in kept twisting and turning left and right. He had at one point turned around to go back the way he came. But it felt like the path had changed. Where was he?!

"God dang it..." Gabriel muttered when he turned a corner to find yet another stretch of hallway. Sighing heavily, he slid down to the floor. His leg was killing him so badly right now and his head was spinning from trying to rationalize what was going on. Was Home Sweet Home always designed like this? No, no it couldn't be. But why was he so lost then? The middle aged man struggled to find a solution to his problem.

Static. There was static playing somewhere. Looking around, Gabriel spotted a radio on a table. Was that always there? There was more static playing, this time coming from down the hall. Okay, this was getting strange and a little creepy. To make things worse, Gabriel could feel eyes watching him from somewhere. Glancing over his shoulder, he thought he spotted a glimpse of a white iris spying on him from an open room that hadn't been there before. The door swiftly shut.

Yep, okay. Time to go.

Pulling himself to his feet, Gabriel jumped when he heard a phone ringing. It wasn't his own and it wasn't the company phone he used to talk with Ollie. This was a different phone entirely. The mystery phone kept ringing. Finding the sound to be increasingly annoying, the man forced himself to walk towards the source of the noise with the intent to make it stop. Stumbling down the hallway that had no end, he finally found the room off to the side. Pushing the door open, the middle aged man limped over to the old rotary dial phone making all of the noise. Picking it up, he mumbled, "Hello?"

"You need to RUN!" Ollie's voice answered. Bewildered, Gabriel heard something move behind him. He whirled around in time to see a cat-like face watching him from the doorway. Yelping out of fear, the man fell backwards onto the floor. Meanwhile, Catnap moved away. He was gone. Crawling over to the doorway, Gabriel looked both ways. There was no sign of the purple feline. He had disappeared into thin air. No time to figure out if he would come back though. Gabriel had enough. Getting back on his feet, he took off running.

"Gotta get out, gotta get out..." Gabriel whispered to himself. He could feel himself losing his mind. Something was wrong, very wrong. Nothing was right in this god awful place. Up ahead, he could see a dim light shining behind a closed door. An exit perhaps! Moving faster, he rammed his shoulder into the door, breaking it open.

Gabriel laid on the floor, dazed. Did he really need to ram the door open? He could've just opened it like a normal person but no. He had to act like a crazy maniac just because the panic was beginning to settle in. Groaning, he attempted to sit up. That's when he heard a vhs tape begin to play.

"Greetings, employees, and welcome to your first day here at Playtime! We're certain that in the days to come you'll find your new family here every bit as loving and supportive as your own," the person in the tape spoke. Gabriel recognized it as the tape that played for all of the new hires at Playtime Co. Heck, he had even watched it when he first joined the company all those years ago. Hissing in pain as he stood up, he limped over to the television screen as the instructor continued, "Feel free to wander the halls! Sit in the mess for lunch. Or watch our children play and learn to their little heart's content. Join the Innovationists, where the bounds of science are continuously pushed. Or join the Counselors of Playcare, whose diligence and care for our children will help shape a brighter future, just you see."

"Uh huh, yeah," Gabriel muttered. Pulling up a chair, he sat down and rubbed his wounded leg. All the while, the vhs tape kept rambling on, "Now, every one of you has your part in that future, so should you come back tomorrow feeling unhappy for where you are, or what you've done... worry not, for your supervisor is here and happy to listen!" Laughing his head off when he heard that, Gabriel retorted, "Yeah! Sure they will-"

"And... should you come back... years later... your conscience finally getting the better of you..." the man on the tape spoke, his tone changing. His blood running cold, Gabriel turned to face the television screen as the tape ran on, "May you descend into the dark and the dust, finding all that awaits you are incomprehensible horrors... each hungry for your return, each eager that they might find you. Perhaps they'd smile at you from a shadow, their smiling mouths full of teeth and meat and plastic, watching and waiting patiently for their turn at a warm welcome. Or perhaps they won't allow you such time to figure out your place in the world you'd left. A world that's theirs now." Gabriel's heart pounded as the tape reached its conclusion.

"Welcome home."

All of the sudden, a fuzzy arm lashed out from the screen. Falling backwards in the chair, Gabriel looked up at the blue furry face that popped out of the television. Huggy Wuggy, except he looked like a living nightmare. His eyes black and lifeless, the blue toy's red lipped mouth stretched open to reveal hundreds of razor sharp teeth. More of his body emerged from the screen and filled up the small room they were in. Now fully out, Huggy let out a mighty roar.

Finally, Gabriel's instincts kicked in. He needed to get out of here! Scrambling to get up, the middle aged man bolted out of the room. The heavy footsteps behind him told him that Nightmare Huggy Wuggy was chasing him. He didn't dare look though, he couldn't afford to do that. He needed to run. However, he couldn't do that forever either, his leg hampering him severely. That wasn't the worst of his problems though when the man reached the end of the hallway.

It was a dead end.

"No no no no nononononononono NO!" Gabriel screamed at the top of his lungs as Nightmare Huggy Wuggy caught up and grabbed him...
