Chapter 24 - Rescuing Poppy
Gabriel was completely out of breath when he reached the top of the stairs. He didn't know if it was his age finally showing or simply because of the constant chases. But he felt worn out. Tying his bandanna around his neck, the middle aged man leaned against a railing. Looking down, he could see that he was up on the catwalks above the Game Station. Gabriel sighed with relief. This nightmare would soon be over.
Something wet dripped on his left hand. Confused, Gabriel looked. A single red drop had splashed on the back of his hand. It was blood. His own blood running cold, the man slowly lifted his gaze. Suspended above his head was the mangled body of Bunzo Bunny. Wrapped up in cobwebs and stained with his blood coming from his disemboweled stomach, a permanent look of fear was frozen on Bunzo's face. Nearby were a trio of mini Wuggies who had suffered the same fate. This was obviously Mommy's handiwork. Perhaps she put them up here to save as a snack for later.
Swallowing hard, Gabriel walked away from the carnage. He couldn't stand looking at those desecrated corpses any longer. Treading along the catwalk, he approached a room that he could only guess was the main control room of the Game Station. Opening the door, he found that his guess was correct. But that wasn't the only thing he found.
A piece of cobweb covering her mouth like a piece of duct tape, Poppy was suspended over the desk by spider silk. Unlike Bunzo and the mini Wuggies though, she was still alive and she was unharmed. Using his Grabpack hands, Gabriel got the small porcelain doll down. Pulling off the cobweb covering her mouth carefully, the man declared, "There you go, better?"
"Much better, thank you," Poppy answered as she performed a little courtesy. But then a dark expression passed over her china face. "Is Mommy dead?" she questioned in a monotone voice. Gabriel was surprised by the sudden mood shift. Biting his lip, the man mumbled, "Um, yeah. She's gone." Of course he was lying. But his gut was telling him that he needed to lie. A cold look glistening in her eyes, Poppy responded curtly, "Excellent. Come, we need to go. The train is waiting."
"I don't have the third part of the train code!" Gabriel exclaimed. Climbing into a ventilation shaft, Poppy called over her shoulder, "Look up, it's above your head." Her voice faded as she went deeper and deeper into the vent. Taking her advice, Gabriel tilted his head back. Sure enough, the final piece hung right above him. Grabbing it, he exited the main control room.
A quick observation of his surroundings told Gabriel there weren't any stairs to get down. However, there was a slide. Plus, a slide was much better than another set of stairs. The man went inside and slid all the way down to the floor of the Game Station. Climbing out, he made his way over to the train.
He was finally getting the heck out of here.
